TIME
We hear the word time so frequently and on an everyday basis that we have really forgotten
the meaning of time! What is time? The Physicist would define time as one of the
fundamental unit of Physics. A fundament unit is unit which cannot be broken down into
more basic units.
However the meaning of time still remains evasive. Time is abstract in nature. Do we really
know for sure whether time exists or not? Is time not an invention of the human being as the
species evolved of its ape days towards theHomo Sapiens? The early hominids did not need
to know about time since the simple life was based upon sunrise and sunset. The only
preoccupations were about finding food to eat, mating and defending. As man evolved and
started leading a more sedentary type (compared to the hunter gatherer days) of life style, it
started to have more time and hence the notion of time started taking root within the brains
of evolving species.
But still our question remains unanswered? What is time? Did time exist before the existence
of the human kind? The answer might lie within the Big Bang Theory1. According to this
theory everything existed in a nutshell before the Big Bang, and then it all suddenly
happened. Time Zero had started. It this from this Time Zero concept that we know the age
of our cosmos and all that it contains. But does time exists outside the space fabric and all of
its contents? Does time without human beings make any sense? Surely the dog of Mr John
cannot read the clock and say It is time to go to sleep!
What does time tell us? Time tells us when to eat, when to go to school, when to go office
and when to do a whole lot of activities. In fact all of our daily activities are time-based. Time

also tells us how old we are and we are hastily approaching our end point, death. Death is a
moment in time.
Time is also telling that we have progressed a long way from our ape days till now and we
have got it wrong all along the way. We have developed ourselves technologically and found
ways to destroy ourselves and our only home, the planet earth.
The proper definition of time is unknown and unfathomable.
Some say that time is the representative of the supreme consciousness within the cosmos! Is
it true?
Time is the essence.

THE EXPANDING UNIVERSE
We shall begin this discussion with the laws of Newton and the first law is:
An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in
motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon
by an unbalanced force.
The second law is
Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object
being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object).
The third law is
For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action
The law of universal gravitation is:

The above laws are the ones that govern the macro part of the universe as it is known to us
and thanks to these laws mankind has been able to send satellites and man alike into space.
In 1929, Edwin Hubble2
discovered that the universe is expanding and later Albert Einstein3
confirmed the same through his mathematical calculations. Einstein later introduced a
parameter within his equations and his model of universe tallied more with that of the static
model of the universe.
According to the law of universal gravitation, the gravitational force in between planets
would become weaker. But what does this mean? Does it mean that as our planets and stars
would go further from each other and the force of attraction will become so small that we
might see major changes within the set up of universe or solar system? The answer is no
because the space is a fabric and all the planets and stars rest within this fabric. In fact it is
the fabric that is expanding.
Now following the Third law of Newton, we know that action and reaction are opposite and
equal. This means that if there is expansion of the universe then there should be contraction
of the universe as well!
Expansion started from the time of the Big Bang and from what is called the point of
singularity4. Contraction may start at the point where the universe may not be able to expand
anymore due to its own mass.
2Edwin Hubble was a physicist and much of the credit of the Big Bang theory goes to him.
3
Albert Einstein is considered to be the greatest physicist that have lived on earth. He discovered the laws ofrelativity.4
Point of singularity means one single point or an infinitesimal point but with infinite density.

In fact no one is sure whether the universe will continue to expand forever and cool off to
absolute zero5
or contract to the point of singularity again and reach astronomical hot
temperatures.
In fact we must admit that we do not know. In fact we are just making observations and see
whether the observations fit within current theories!
The truth is that we do not know for sure.
5Absolute zero is the lowest temperature that can be reached and it is zero Kelvin

RELIGION
Religion and the truth of religion are two completely different things. Religion is important
because it provides many with rules for living based on fear and the threat of eternal
damnation. The law also provides these guidelines. Non-religious people have the same
moral compass but not based on eternal damnation.6
Let us study the above statement carefully. What is religion? Religion can be defined as a set
of cultural belief adopted by certain people over time and that serves the purpose of moral
and social guidance for these people. Normally a higher power or a God is associated for
having given these sacred moral and social codes to a special chosen one among these very
people.
Living based on fear is a disturbing statement. What does fear mean? Fear is a distressing
negative sensation induced by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism occurring in
response to a specific stimulus, such as pain or the threat of danger. In short, fear is the ability to
recognize danger leading to an urge to confront it or flee from it (also known as the fight-or-flight
response) but in extreme cases of fear (terror) a freeze or paralysis response is possible.7
How can something that is supposed to be good such as religion, be based on fear and in fact it is
true as well. In all religions the concept of Gods becoming angry, sending man to the eternal fire of
damnation in hell and my other things exists. God is supposed to be good and the concept of a
vengeful God just does not feel right.
Where does God reside? Within the cosmos, or outside of it? If it is within the cosmos then, it is
subject to the laws of the cosmos and one of them is action and reaction are opposite and equal.

If God resides both within and beyond the cosmos as well, then we have a problem because part of
God will be subjected to the cosmic laws and the other part to other laws or no laws which we do
not know!
Now, let us dwell on the meaning of the term Non-Religious people. Does it mean a person who
has got no religion or follow no particular one? Does it mean a person who does not believe in God
according to the format of a religion? The answer is no. A Christian would see a Muslim as non
religious and a Muslim would see a Hindu as non-religion. This is so because none of these people
follow religion in exactly the same format and they do not have the same idea of God. But strangely
enough they associate the same properties to God!
Then we truly have the Non-religious one. That person is free from bondage and does not follow any
rituals or practices. But that kind of person feels a spiritual communion with nature itself and just
feels the super-consciousness of nature itself. I am not talking about atheism here but nature.
Religion is dogmatic in its approach and any dogmas do not need proof to exist. Dogmas are based
on belief and belief is the absence of knowledge. Knowledge is based on scientific proof.
Is there a God? May be yes? Is it according to what religions describe or something else?

BELIEF
What is belief? We use this word so often and yet we do not know its meaning. Do you know
the meaning of belief? Belief can be defined as a psychological state of mind whereby a
person has a conviction that something or some idea is true. Actually any kind of belief is
stand alone. By stand alone, I mean that the belief cannot hold true outside of the belief
system that the person has created for him or her. A belief system cannot withstand the test of
science. Science proceeds with experimentation, observation and conclusion. Science needs
tangible proof of any theory that is advanced.
Many people believe in many different things and Gods. Their beliefs are so strong that some
people walk on fire, pierce their bodies with huge blades and do many other things. Belief is
the strongest force that the universe has known. This force cannot be quantified but we all
know that it exists.
What has belief done in this world? Hitler had some kind of belief and he ended up ordering
the massacre of millions of Jews. The Hutus and Tutsis of Rwanda had different beliefs and
they ended up running into genocide.
So many wars happened on earth just because of the belief of peoples.
But at the same time many good things happened as well. Einstein believed he could unlock
the mysteries of the universe and he was fairly successful. Mankind believed that we shall be
able to fly and we ended up building aircrafts. There are many other good things that belief
has done for us.
But the strangest thing is whatever belief one holds on to, it survives only to the point where
that person is successful in his/her quest.

Belief is truly a powerful force!
Should we believe in a dogma?

LIFE
There are at least seven theories that explain the origin of life on earth. But to keep it simple
we shall content ourselves with the fact that life on earth evolved from microbes. Water has
been and is still a sine qua none condition on earth, for the evolution of life to have been
possible.
Life on earth is characterized by various species and sub-species of living beings amongst
which are plants as well. The human being is considered to be the most intelligent life form
on earth. But are we really intelligent? We like alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, drugs and other
dangerous substances. There is war in each and every corner of the planet earth. Are we
intelligent?
It should be noted that life on earth evolved in such a way that snakes started producing
venom, the gorilla has got the strength of twenty men; the cheetah runs at 110km/h, and many
others wonders exist as well. But evolution has gifted human kind with a highly developed
and sophisticated brain. This is why as from the date a baby human being is born, it takes
from one to two years for the baby to walk properly. At birth the mass ratio of the brain to the
body of the child is in favour of the brain. Clearly the body (spine) of the baby is not strong
enough to sustain the mass of the brain along with its skull. The brain is the greatest asset of
the human being.
Evolution has gifted man with a powerful brain and man has emerged to be the most
dangerous predator on earth! All other species on earth live while respecting nature. Humans
are the only species which has tried to master nature, as if nature will be slave to the human
kind. Mankind,Homo Sapiens Sapiens8, has knowingly or unknowingly caused the extinction

of many other species on the planet. We have already disturbed the natural food chain right
up to the mass death of the krill in Alaska due the warming of the oceans, as a consequence
of the greenhouse effect. We have started the process of destroying our planet long time ago
when we started hankering for fossil energy. Then the destruction process has been expedited
by the discovery and use of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)9. These days summers are getting
extremely hot; winters extremely cold.
We are well set on our way to destroy the only planet that has given rise to our species and
others as well. Our Sun will be dying in about 5 billion years and in any case if our species is
still around (?), they would definitely need to find a new home before 5 billion years or
become extinct.
As a species we do not know where we came from, why we are here and where we are going
to?10

DEATH
What is the death? This very question is enough to cause sleepless nights to many so called
brave ones! Since time immemorial people are afraid of dying but nevertheless we all die.
This is the drama of life. Life and death are intimately linked since the time of birth of any
living being. Actually one starts dying since the very moment of birth!
Dying is a process and a very long one indeed. We have heard about the art of living but what
about the art of dying? Every single day we are making one more step towards the finale
moment but still we have obliterated this very word and fact from our mind and vocabulary.
Sad indeed because consciously forgetting something does not mean that it will not happen.
Only one thing happens for sure in life; it is death!
Science would define death as the cessation of all vital functions that sustain the living
organism. We also have the term Brain dead, which means that no waveform pattern is
being recorded from the brain on an encephalogram11
. When a person is brain dead, its life
can be sustained within the body by a specialized machine but the person would be in a
comatose state.
I said it before that death is a moment in time. From a metaphysicists point of view, I would
say that death is the halt of all experiences with reference to stimuli from the external world.
But most of the times, we hear the term that a person has departed from this world. The body
of the dead person is still here! Who has departed? Where did it go?
11Machine that can register brain waves.

Human beings always feel the absence of a dead family member or dear one. Why? We
should note that a person occupies a certain space and emits certain vibrations. These
vibrations are absorbed by the materials within the immediate surroundings where that living
being has spent most of its time!
Death is necessary for something new to happen. Remember the pink salmons. They are born
in a river within mountains. Afterwards, they swim their way to the open seas to spend their
adult life. At their time of reproduction, they swim back to their original place of birth, and
then they die after mating and laying their eggs!
Death is always associated with the colour Black. Why? I think this is something that is
deeply ingrained within the psyche of the western culture. People cannot see in the dark and
people are always afraid of whatever they cannot see. People are afraid of death. On the other
hand eastern cultures associate death with the white colour. White is considered to be pure.
Death is not the end.

CONSCIOUSNESS
We hear this word very often. But what is consciousness? In simple terms, consciousness can
be defined as to be aware. But to be aware of what? Various degrees of consciousness are
associated with various species of living beings. We consider that human beings are the most
conscious species on the planet earth. But are we really the most conscious ones on the planet
earth.
These days, scientists are working on the theory that life originated from inanimate matter.
They are also trying to collect evidence that support their hypothesis. Now for a single
moment let us suppose that the theory of the scientists proves to be right. Then we shall face
a very difficult question. How can something as subtle as consciousness arise from inanimate
matter!
We shall try to look for an answer within the world of quantum physics12
. In the field of
quantum studies, there is a famous experiment called the double slit experiment. Light is
incident on some kind of card board with two slits within it. On the other side of the card
board an interference pattern is obtained due to the wave nature of light. But however, when a
camera is introduced to observe the outcome of the experiment, the result itself changes. The
light behaves as if it consists of particles only, such as electrons, and two distinct lines are
obtained on the other side of the card board.
In the section above, we have noted that the very fact of observing the experiment has
changed the outcome of the experiment! Physicists are well aware of this. But there is
something fundamental that we should understand here. And that part is only something that
12Branch of physic studies the creation at the micro level.

is conscious of itself, and its surroundings, which has got the ability to change its behaviour
when it is observed. If consciousness is not involved then modification of behaviour is
impossible! This means that light consists of conscious particles.
In fact light is composed of photons. Hence photons13
are conscious. Everything found within
the cosmos is made of atoms at the most basic level. An atom consists of a nucleus with
electrons revolving in orbits around the nucleus of the atom. The nucleus contains protons
and neutrons. Electrons are conscious but how do we know that? To understand the
consciousness of electrons we need to understand what plasma is?
Plasma is a special type of matter that contains a significantly high number of free
electrons. In fact gases can be converted into plasma by heating them up so that electrons
are released within them. As soon as these electrons are liberated they not have the haphazard
pattern of movement that is associated with them. In fact they tend to behave as one single
entity working towards a higher purpose. They seem to have a collective consciousness and
for collective consciousness to be possible, individual consciousness must primarily exists
within the electrons (David Bohm14
Plasma experiment).
It is assumed that the consciousness of human beings is within their brains. The brain is kilos
of grey matter where we have billions of neurons and synapses. Millions of electrons travel
within these neurons and synapses thus making thoughts and experiences possible.
Is it safe to assume that our consciousness arise from the number of electrons circulating
within our brains?
The more evolved a species is the more electrons its brain contains and the more conscious it
is?
13Photons are defined as discrete packets of energy.
14David Bohm was highly influential quantum physicist of the 20
thcentury.

We are composed only of atoms at the most fundamental level and atoms contain electrons.
Is it possible that through the chain of evolution that something as inanimate as an atom has
given rise to animate beings and consciousness as well?
What is the true answer?

FLOWERS AND COLOURS
Flowers are one of the most beautiful creations of nature. Except when suffering from an
allergy, almost everybody likes flowers for their scents and colours. Flowers get their scents
from a chemical called flavanoids and their colour from a pigment chemical called
anthocyanins. Plants have their green colour from their chlorophyll.
But are red roses red and yellow roses yellow? Well, you would surely answer yes! Let us
stop for a moment and look at some of the properties of light. Light or white light, as we
know it, is composed of an array of colours. White light can be split up into its various
colours by passing through a prism. The colours obtained are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green,
Yellow, Orange and Red.
All the colours in the spectrum of white light has wavelength associated with them. Violet
has the smallest wavelength and red the longest wavelength. Our human eye can detect all the
colours within the spectrum of light from violet to red.
Now, we should ask ourselves the question about what is a pigment? The thesaurus
dictionary defines pigment as dye, colour or tint. But a naturally occurring chemical is
responsible for this pigment. How does the colour happen? The chemical is responsible to
create certain conditions within the flowers that only a certain part of the visible spectrum of
light is absorbed and then the rest is reflected. We see the reflected colours only!! Flowers
have got no colours of their own! So the next time you see a flower, please remember.

In fact nothing in the creation has a true colour of its one, not even us human beings. We are
all black! Black is not a colour but it is the absence of light! Remember that it is light that
gives colours.
We live in a perfect illusory world......
Are we not just decoders to decode the way that the creation has been encoded?
