The Butterfly Life Cycle

• Let’s explore a butterfly’s life cycle in detail, including all four stages of life. All butterflies have "complete metamorphosis." To grow into an adult they go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Each stage has a different goal - for instance, caterpillars need to eat a lot, and adults need to reproduce. Depending on the type of butterfly, the life cycle of a butterfly may take anywhere from one month to a whole year

The First Stage: The Egg • A butterfly starts life as a very

small, round, oval or cylindrical egg. The coolest thing about butterfly eggs, especially monarch butterfly eggs, is that if you look close enough you can actually see the tiny caterpillar growing inside of it. Some butterfly eggs may be round, some oval and some may be ribbed while others may have other features. The egg shape depends on the type of butterfly that laid the egg.

The First Stage: The Egg• Butterfly eggs are usually laid

on the leaves of plants, so if you are actively searching for these very tiny eggs, you will have to take some time and examine quite a few leaves in order to find some.

The Second Stage: The Larva (Caterpillar)

• When the egg finally hatches, most of you would expect for a butterfly to emerge, right? Well, not exactly. In the butterfly’s life cycle, there are four stages and this is only the second stage. Butterfly larvae are actually what we call caterpillars. Caterpillars do not stay in this stage for very long and mostly, in this stage all they do is eat.

The Second Stage: The Larva (Caterpillar)

• When the egg hatches, the caterpillar will start his work and eat the leaf they were born onto. This is really important because the mother butterfly needs to lay her eggs on the type of leaf the caterpillar will eat – each caterpillar type likes only certain types of leaves. Since they are tiny and can not travel to a new plant, the caterpillar needs to hatch on the kind of leaf it wants to eat.

The Second Stage: The Larva (Caterpillar)

• Caterpillars need to eat and eat so they can grow quickly. When a caterpillar is born, they are extremely small. When they start eating, they instantly start growing and expanding. Their exoskeleton (skin) does not stretch or grow, so they grow by “molting” (sheding the outgrown skin) several times while it grows.

• A caterpillar is the larval stage of butterflies and moths. The caterpillar hatches from a tiny egg and will eventually pupate and turn into an adult butterfly or moth.This larval stage usually lasts from two weeks to about a month. This is the main feeding stage of the butterfly. Caterpillars eat almost constantly and grow very quickly, at an astonishing rate.

Diet • Caterpillars mostly eat the leaves of

flowering plants and trees using their powerful jaws (mandibles) Caterpillars are very limited in their diet; many species will only eat the leaves of a single type of plant. They usually eat only the plant that their mother carefully chose to lay their egg on.

Only a few lepidoptera larva are carnivores. The larva of the Harvester Butterfly exclusively eats woolly aphids.

• As caterpillars grow, their exoskeleton becomes tight on them, so they molt (lose their old exoskeleton). After the molt, while the new skin is still soft, they swallow a lot of air, which expands their body. Then, when the cuticle hardens, they let the air out and have room for growth.

• Caterpillars molt four or five times as they grow. Each different caterpillar stage is called an instar.

Preparing to Pupate• When the caterpillar has reached the right

size, it is time for it to pupate. It finds a suitable place to attach itself (a twig, a leaf, undergroud, or another place). It attaches itself with a silken girdle around its middle and a silken pad and cremaster (at the end of the abdomen). It then splits open and loses its exoskeleton and pupates (becomes a pupa).

Preparing to Pupate• When larval growth is done, the

larva stops eating and empties its digestive system (leaving a small dark spot). It then looks for a sheltered, safe spot where it will pupate (turn into a pupa, entering its third stage of its metamorphosis).

The Third Stage: Pupa (Chrysalis)

• pupa stage is one of the coolest stages of a butterfly’s life. As soon as a caterpillar is done growing and they have reached their full length/weight, they form themselves into a pupa, also known as a chrysalis. From the outside of the pupa, it looks as if the caterpillar may just be resting, but the inside is where all of the action is. Inside of the pupa, the caterpillar is rapidly changing.

The Third Stage: Pupa (Chrysalis)

• Now, as most people know, caterpillars are short, stubby and have no wings at all. Within the chrysalis the old body parts of the caterpillar are undergoing a remarkable transformation, called ‘metamorphosis,’ to become the beautiful parts that make up the butterfly that will emerge. Tissue, limbs and organs of a caterpillar have all been changed by the time the pupa is finished, and is now ready for the final stage of a butterfly’s life cycle.

The Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly

• Finally, when the caterpillar has done all of its forming and changing inside the pupa, if you are lucky, you will get to see an adult butterfly emerge. When the butterfly first emerges from the chrysalis, both of the wings are going to be soft and folded against its body. This is because the butterfly had to fit all its new parts inside of the pupa.

The Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly

• As soon as the butterfly has rested after coming out of the chrysalis, it will pump blood into the wings in order to get them working and flapping – then they get to fly. Usually within a three or four-hour period, the butterfly will master flying and will search for a mate in order to reproduce.

• When in the fourth and final stage of their lives, adult butterflies are constantly on the look out to reproduce and when a female lays their eggs on some leaves, the butterfly life cycle will start all over.

Metamorphosis: A New Creation

• Very hungry caterpillars becoming beautiful butterflies illustrate the change God has called us to.

• Webster's dictionary defines metamorphosis as "a change of physical form, structure, or substance especially by supernatural means" or "a striking alteration in appearance, character or circumstances."

• The online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, adds that it "involves significant change in form as well as growth" and it "usually accompanies a change of habitat or of habits."

• Through metamorphosis, the caterpillar becomes a totally new creation.

• Metamorphosis compares to the process of change that we undergo in becoming God's begotten children. • Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:17, • "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new

creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

• He actually uses a term from which we get the word metamorphosis in Romans 12:2

• : "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

• The word transformed is in the Greek metamorphoo, and it means

• undergoing a profound transformation. • So we also must become completely changed

into a new creation by developing the mind and character of God.

• The butterfly has four stages of life: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

• The larva is what we refer to as the caterpillar. Other names for caterpillars include inchworm, fruit worm, silkworm or even woolly bear.

• Many caterpillars are not very beautiful. A caterpillar is a very small creature that we would probably overlook if we were walking through a forest. Many of us might try to squash it or flick it away if we did see one.

Eating Machines• Aptly called eating machines, the caterpillar's daily agenda

is simple:• eat, eat, avoid being eaten and eat. • They have perhaps the fastest growth rate of any animal in

the world.• A tobacco hornworm, for example, increases its own

weight 10,000 times in less than 20 days. • The monarch increases its mass by 30,000 times as a

caterpillar.• Caterpillars do not have very good eyesight or senses. • They rely on their antenna to help them locate food since

they only have six tiny simple eyes on the lower portion of their head.

• For us to change, we must eat a diet of God's truth. • Like the caterpillar, we also do not "see" well. • Because our nature is totally against God, • He must first draw us to Him (Romans 8:7-

8[7]; John 6:44, 65). • God then convicts us of our sin and • grants us repentance (John 16:8; Acts 11:18). • Upon repentance, God then forgives us (1 John

1:9-10). • Finally, God gives us the desire to learn His ways

and to • submit our will to Him (Philippians 2:13).

• Only after we repent and become baptized—physical, outward signs of our choice to follow God—can we make the choice to serve God through obedience. Then,

• we begin our lifelong process to completely change ourselves with God's help.

• We become the begotten children of God through the receipt of God's Holy Spirit within our mind.

• As such, we should labor "for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give" (John 6:26-27).

• This food can be found in God's truth. Christ says,

• "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world" (John 6:51)

• We partake of this bread by continuing in our commitment to serve God in obedience and

• also by incorporating God's laws into our lives. • The Message translation reads, • "Here's how we can be sure that we know God

in the right way: Keep his commandments. If someone claims, 'I know him well!' but doesn't keep his commandments, he's obviously a liar. His life doesn't match his words" (1 John 2:3-4).

• The Bible is its own expositor. Scripture is to be compared with scripture. The student should learn to view the word as a whole, and to see the relation of its parts. He should gain a knowledge of its grand central theme,of God's original purpose for the world, of the rise of the great controversy, and of the work of redemption. He should understand the nature of the two principles that are contending for supremacy, and should learn to trace their working through the records of history and prophecy, to the great consummation. He should see how this controversy enters into every phase of human experience; how in every act of life he himself reveals the one or the other of the two antagonistic motives; and how, whether he will or not, he is even now deciding upon which side of the controversy he will be found.
