Aberdeen Royal InfirmaryThe new Emergency Care Centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is one of the largest emergency healthcare units in the UK with 36,000m² of floor space over 10 floors. The centre is twice the size of the flagship Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, and brings together the accident and emergency department, Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU), the primary care out-of-hours service (G-Med) and ward accommodation for over 300 patients.

Speedline Stockist SIG Insulation, Aberdeen branch

Customer/Installer Robertson Group

Products supplied Over 52,500m² of Speedline Drywall Metal Systems

ProjectAfter specifying Speedline metal partitioning systems, SIG Insulation Aberdeen branch streamlined the delivery process to establish the protocols and requirements needed to meet every deadline throughout the project.

To ensure the project wasn’t delayed in any way, all deliveries to the site were made at 7.30am with trucks arriving at the dedicated ‘holding zone’ at the same time each morning. SIG Insulation also cut certain products to size before delivery, saving costs on wastage, reducing weight of lorry loads, and therefore fuel consumption, and limiting the amount of work required on site.

As well as reducing wastage and associated costs, the materials were ready for immediate use upon arrival to site, driving on-site time and cost efficiencies to ensure the build programme remained on schedule.

Lacoste Shop, LondonLuxury high street fashion retailer, Lacoste, opened its largest store in the world on Brompton Road, London, which is 600m² of retail space, spread out over three floors.

Speedline Stockist SIG Interiors, Croydon branch

Customer/Installer Bespoke Drywall

Products supplied Over 500m² of Speedline metal frame, Speedline Access panels

ProjectThe SIG Interiors Croydon branch supplied Speedline drywall products and accessories to the store construction site, which was located on a major shopping street in London. Due to the busy location, which was just down the road from Harrods, the project required excellent communication between all parties and deliveries were coordinated early in the morning due to traffic and road restrictions.

SIG Interiors in Nottingham passed the order to the Croydon branch to provide the most efficient service for the customer, which meant the project went smoothly and without any delays and the store opened on schedule in June 2012.

Boxed StudsTo create greater rigidity and height and to provide support at doorways, C Studs may be boxed together. To enable this the bearing faces of the C Studs are asymmetrical – 32mm and 34mm – simply nest short and long faces alternately and snap together.

Spliced StudsIn order to extend them, single C Studs can be easily spliced together. Be sure to overlap the C Studs at least 600mm and fix them together with steel pop rivets stud interlocking tool or wafer head screws on both flanges.

NEW Partition Brace PB24 – due to the unique design of this product, the lips are simply snipped out where the partition brace overlaps the stud. Slots are pierced to allow for studs to be erected at 400 or 600mm centres.

Speedline Standard System

For all partitions i.e. C Studs, I Studs, Resilient Bar, Wall Liner and Wall Furring the following applies:-

General Points All Acoustic test data is done in laboratory conditions, built at 600mm centres and are measured as RwdB figures. The “on site “ conditions in which the partition is to be built may have a significant effect on the test figures quoted, and due to this it is unlikely that the RwdB figures quoted from laboratory tests will be repeated in “on site” conditions. Deflection head details can also negatively affect performance please contact local branch for details. If stud centres are less than 600mm please contact local branch for potential acoustic loss.

Butt boards together- don’t force boards into position. Fix the boards so that the decorative paper side is on the outside to receive jointing treatment. Fixings must penetrate steelwork by a minimum of 10mm, they should be installed not closer than 13mm from cut edges and 10mm from their bound edges. The boards should be located on the site line on the centre line of framing (except Speedline Acoustic studs where site line is slightly

Single Layer Installations Plasterboard must be fixed at 300mm maximum centres to the metal framework with the appropriate length screw. Plasterboard joints must be staggered from one side of the partition to the other.

Double Layer Installations Inner layers can be fixed at 600mm centres but outer layers must be fixed at 300mm centres to the metal framework with the appropriate length screw. The second layer of plasterboard should be fixed with all joints staggered in relation to the first layer assuming studs fixed at 600mm centres.

Fixing of Floor and Ceiling Tracks All tracks must be secured to the floor and ceiling in the centre of the profile at 600mm centres with suitable fixings.

For 94mm and 148mm tracks we recommend two rows of staggered fixings at 600mm centres.

Partition Brace For fixing of Partition Brace or for joining stud to track (if required) we recommend the use of wafer head screws.

Deflection headWhen partitions are erected to span the full height between floors, structural slabs or beams, accommodation for movement may be needed. The deflection heads shown will allow for movement up to 15mm and protect the partition from damage. These details have been both tested for fire resistance to BS 476 part 20 & 22 section 5. Fix plasterboard, allowing for a 15mm deflection at the partition head; do not screw fix the plasterboard to the studs or track above the Partition Brace.

* Above 15mm please refer to local branch.

Deflection heads can lose up to 4dB on acoustic performance, please contact local branch for details.

Electrical Services - Acoustic InsulationTo ensure they do not lie back to back, electrical sockets should be offset. Use Flat Strip FS24 or Partition Brace PB24 to support outlet boxes and seal around with acoustic sealant. Two layers, either side of 12.5mm standard plasterboard, will achieve 60 minutes of fire resistance.

Putty Pads shown on page 81.

Clamping StripThe Speedline galvanised clamping strip is used to cover joints when building partitions and either a plastic or aluminium cover section clips over the clamping strip to give a good finished appearance.

Residential Solutions

This information is not exhaustive, is provided only as a guide and should be used with the Approved Document E.

The New Approved Document E, (2003 Edition) was implemented on 1st July 2003. It’s primary objective is to raise the standard of sound insulation in all dwellings as well as between rooms in hostels, hotels and residential homes. This is the case in all new builds and refurbishments and conversions.

The solutions in the residential sector of this document are aimed at satisfying:

E1 - Protection against sound from other parts of the building and adjoining buildings.

E2 - Protection against sound within a dwelling/house etc.

An Internal Wall or floor between bathroom/wc and a habitable room also between bedrooms require Rw40dB. Solutions on page 24.

Pre-Completion Testing • Buildings are to be tested prior to completion in order to confirm

they meet or exceed Part E standards.• The Regulations require that one in ten of each construction type

requires testing.

Full details of pre-completion testing are explained in Section 1 of the Approved Document E.

Solutions on pages 26 and 27.

Robust Details These are a set of standards developed by the House Builders Federation. They will be permitted to demonstrate compliance with Part E of the Building Regulations, as an alternative to pre-completion testing. However PCT testing is still needed unless registered with Robust Standard Details Ltd.

BENEFITS

All sketches show one layer of mineral wool batts placed between the studs. It is also acceptable to place a layer of mineral wool batts or quilt on both sides of the wall.

This system complies with Robust Details Ltd for Part E of the Building Regulations. Pre-Completion Testing is still required for Robust Detail solutions unless the site is registered with Robust Details Ltd. All systems have a maximum 3000m height.

Wall Lining Most Common Builds:– two layers 12.5mm Sound Resistant plasterboard, subject to board

having combined mass of 22 kg/m2, or

– 12.5mm Sound Resistant plasterboard outer leaf and 19mm plank inner leaf (mounted horizontally). Subject to combined mass of 22 kg/m2.

– two or more layers of gypsum-based board minimum (total nominal mass per unit area 22 kg/m2) both sides.

– all joints staggered.

Wall Width 200mm (min) between inner faces of wall linings.

Absorbent Material– one layer 50mm (min) unfaced mineral wool batts (density

33-60 kg/m3), or

– two layers 25mm (min) unfaced mineral wool batts (density 33-60 kg/m3), or

– two layers 25mm (min) unfaced mineral wool quilt (density min 10 kg/m3).

– refer to robust details specification for checklists and construction details.

Do• Keep wall linings at least 200mm apart• Ensure the batts cover whole wall area and are fitted

together tightly• Make sure batts are not tightly compressed by the twin frames• Ensure that all cavity stops/closers are flexible or are fixed to

one frame only• Make sure there is no connection between the two leaves

except where ties are necessary for structural reasons• Stagger joints in wall linings to avoid air paths• Seal all joints in outer layer with tape or caulk with sealant

PD = Predecorated sound/fire resistant plasterboard. Note for greater heights please refer to the Speedline Metal Systems Product Application Guide where solutions up to 12m can be found.

All Studs spaced at 600mm centres.Plasterboard codes are: FR - Fire Resistant plasterboard SR - Sound Resistant Plasterboard IR - Impact Resistant Plasterboard PD - Predecorated Sound/Fire Resistant Plasterboard F - Fermacell Gypsum Board

With studs spaced at 400mm centres, maximum height can be increased by 0.6m for double boarded applications. Ceramic Tiling – If Ceramic tiles are being fixed to the finished wall, stud centres must be reduced to 400mm to prevent cracking of tiles.

Where pre Completion Testing is to be used. Part E stipulates that the Builder needs to demonstrate that the prescribed Acoustic Rating has been achieved. To satisfy 10% of all new dwellings should be pre completion tested on site. The testing is applicable to separating walls and floors. The testing will need to be carried out by an accredited third party. Twin Frame walls have the potential to satisfy the relevant criteria. All Acoustic test data is done in laboratory conditions, built at 600mm centres and are measured as RwdB figures. Examples of such are highlighted beneath

All sound insulation data is based on laboratory evaluation of the building element in isolation and cannot reproduce your installed local conditions. The actual tests carried out are used to offer an order of magnitude comparison for the performance of the various systems. Sound insulation on site is a function of the partition chosen and the associated structures in which it is installed.

We cannot take any responsibility for overall design and we would advise that specialist advice is sought at an early stage of design. All test data and system specifications are for systems constructed with materials and components as shown. The inclusion of other components without prior approval or constructed on site contrary to these documents will invalidate test certification and system performance.

The use of resilient bar walls has a greater emphasis on standard of workmanship. However, if installed correctly it has the potential to satisfy requirements for material change of use applications.

Section 1 of the Building Bulletin 93 (BB93) supersedes Section A of Building Bulletin 87(2) as the constructional standard for acoustics for new school buildings.

In addition, Part E of the Building Regulations includes schools within its scope. All newly built or refurbished schools are required to comply with BB93.

Design Criteria All spaces should meet the performance standards defined in Tables 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 for indoor ambient noise level, airborne and impact sound insulation and reverberation time.

Open-plan spaces should additionally meet the performance standard for speech intelligibility in Table 1.6.

Acoustics The Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999, S1 1999 No. 2 which applies to both new and existing school buildings states “Each room or other space in a school building shall have the acoustic conditions and the insulation against disturbance by noise appropriate to its normal use”. Compliance with the acoustic performance standards specified in Section 1 will satisfy both regulations for new schools.

BB93 gives recommended external noise levels for classrooms which should be used by the design team when making planning decisions.

Table 1.1 Performance standards for indoor ambient noise levels – upper limits for the indoor ambient noise level, LAeq, 30min

References1 Section 1 of Building Bulletin 93

1.1 Performance standards The overall objective of the performance standards in Section 1.1 is to provide acoustic conditions in schools that (a) facilitate clear communication of speech between teacher and student, and between students, and (b) do not interfere with study activities.

1 Research indicates that teaching can be disrupted by individual noisy events such as aircraft flyovers, even where the noise level is below the limits in Table 1.1 having limits of 35dB or less the noise level should not regularly exceed 55 dB LA1, 30min.

2 Acoustic considerations of open-plan areas are complex and are discussed in Section 1.1.7 and section 4.

3 Studios require specialised acoustic environments and the noise limits for these will vary with the size, intended use and type of room. In some cases noise limits below 30 dB LAeq may be required, and separate limits for different types of noise may be appropriate; specialist advice should be sought

4 Halls are often multi-functional spaces (especially in primary schools) used for activities such as dining, PE, drama, music, assembly and performing plays and concerts. In such multi-functional spaces the designer should design to the lowest indoor ambient noise level for which the which the space is likely to be used. For large halls used for formal drama and music performance lower noise levels than those used in Table 1.1 are preferable, and levels of 25 dB LAeq, 30min may be appropriate. In these cases specialist advice should be sought.

* Part E of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2000 (as amended by S1 2002/2871) applies to teaching and learning spaces and is not intended to cover administration and ancillary spaces (see under Scope in the introduction). For these areas the performance standards are for guidance only.

Notes on Table 1.2

1 Each value in the table is the minimum required to comply with Building Regulations. A value of 55 dB DnT(Tmf,max),w between two music practice rooms will not mean that the music will be inaudible between the rooms: in many cases, particularly if brass or percussion instruments are played, a higher value is desirable.

2 Where values greater than 55 dB DnT(Tmf,max),w are required it is advisable to separate the rooms using acoustically less sensitive areas such as corridors and storerooms. Where this is not possible, high performance constructions are likely to be required and specialist advice should be sought.

3 It is recommended that music rooms should not be placed adjacent to design and technology spaces or art rooms.

4 These values of DnT(Tmf,max),w include the effect of glazing, doors and other weaknesses in the partition. In general, normal (non-acoustic) doors provide much less sound insulation than the surrounding walls and reduce the overall DnT(Tmf,max),w of the wall considerably, particularly for values above 35dB DnT(Tmf,max),w. Therefore doors should not generally be installed in partitions between rooms requiring values above 35dB DnT(Tmf,max),w unless acoustic doors, door lobbies, or double doors with an airspace are used. This is not normally a problem as rooms are usually accessed via corridors or circulation spaces so that there are at least two doors between noise-sensitive rooms. (See extra guidance in BB93.)

Notes on Table 1.3

1 The Rw ratings are for the door set alone. Manufacturers sometimes provide door set sound insulation data as a combined rating for the wall and door set where Rw refers to the performance of an -10m2 high-performance wall containing the door set. This is not appropriate as it gives higher figures than the Rw of the door set itself. However, with knowledge of the wall and door set areas the Rw of the door set can be calculated from these test results.

2 Special design advice is recommended.

3 Wherever possible, ventilators should not be installed between music rooms and circulation spaces.

* A laboratory measurement because of the difficulty in accurately measuring the airborne sound insulation between rooms and corridors, or rooms and stairwells in the field. Therefore it is crucial that the airborne sound insulation of the wall and/or door set is not compromised by flanking sound transmission, e.g. sound transmission across the junction between the ceiling and the corridor wall (See extra guidance in BB93).

Acoustic Considerations As well as meeting airborne sound reduction requirements the design team should also consider the potential for eliminating or minimising flanking sound transmission. Reverberation will also affect the acoustic quality of given areas. Reverberation can be controlled by careful selection of internal finishes. Tables 2, 3 and 4 highlight considerations that are followed under HTM2045.

It is recommended that considerations in HTM2045 are followed. Please consult a qualified acoustic consultant for advice.

coustic StudExplanation of Terms Every time an amendment to the Building Regulations is introduced a new list of terms and abbreviations follows.

Our comprehensive list will help you to decipher some of the terms and abbreviations you will come across in literature relating to acoustics and Part E.

Installation Benefits

Acoustic Studs use same plasterboard fixing centres

Are as simple to partition with C Studs

Existing track sections can be utilised

Construction Partitions built using Acoustic Stud are constructed in exactly the same way as those built using standard C Studs. All existing track sections can be utilised with Acoustic Studs and plasterboard-fixing centres will be exactly the same.

Attention to detail is essential. Care must be taken in construction to ensure a soundproof structure performs to its maximum capability. As sound – like water, light or air – will find the smallest crack and expose it as a weak point, your structure should be built as if it needs to be waterproofed.

A single 25mm hole in an otherwise acoustically sound partition can reduce performance by up to an incredible 15 dB.

Although a 25mm hole should be visible a crack 1mm x 1m will not always be obvious and, if not treated with an acoustic sealant, will be detrimental to the structure.

An acoustic construction is only as good as its weakest point!

Flanking Noise Flanking Transmission occurs when sound travels along elements shared by adjacent structures.

Sound does not always travel straight through the building element. If the wall, floor or partition concerned has good sound-reducing capabilities, the sound will travel from A to B by the easiest route, often around the sides or over the top!

It should be borne in mind that flanking transmission can exceed direct transmission and damage the overall capabilities of the construction if flanking constructions are not correctly specified and constructed.

To overcome this problem of flanking, any gaps in the installation must be filled with acoustic sealant on all edges and on both sides of the partition.

Building Element Walls, floors and roofs, etc. Ctr The correction to a sound insulation quality to take into account low frequency noise.

Decibel (dB) The most commonly used unit to measure sound.

DnTw The measurement used to measure the airborne sound insulation between two rooms (on site).

DnTw+Ctr See above, but with the low frequency correction factor included.

Flanking Transmission Sound transmitted between two rooms using an indirect path e.g. the top or bottom of a separating wall (see further details below).

Frequency The number of pressure variations per second that gives a sound its distinctive tone.

Hertz (Hz) The unit of the frequency of the sound.

Impact Sound Sound resulting from direct impact on a building element.

Internal Floor Any floor that is not a separating floor.

Internal Wall Any wall that does not have a separation function.

Lntw The measurement used to measure the impact sound insulation of floors (on site). Lnw = laboratory testing.

Noise Unwanted sound.

Pre-Completion Testing (PCT) A new requirement to Part E where structures not conforming to the RSD will be tested prior to completion to check they reach the required standards.

Robust Standard Detail (RSD) A collection of pre-approved constructions that, if used, negate the need for PCT

Rw The measurement used to relate the sound insulation of a material or building element in a laboratory.

Separating Floor Floor that separates flats or rooms for residential purposes.

Separating Wall Wall that separates adjoining dwellings, houses, flats or rooms.

Sound Reduction Index (SRI) A quantity measured in a laboratory that characterises the sound insulation properties of a material or building element in a stated frequency band.

44

A high performance fire protection system to enclose shafts in high rise buildings.

The Speedline Shaft Encasement System allows installation to take place from the landing side only.

This system is non load bearing and designed to fit between structural floors.

Benefits• Fast and simple to erect• Cost effective• Good Impact resistance and stiffness• Lighter in weight than masonry• High level of Fire Protection• Allows any thickness of coreboard

to be used

Speedline 2 in 1 fire rated intumescent must be used:

• On all metal to structure surfaces• On all metal to Coreboard surfaces• Between plasterboard packers and

coreboard at the head detail.

Corner and Junction information is detailed separately.

Fire Resistant plasterboard is fixed to the outside of the framework on the non shaft side of the partition.

Double and Triple Layer Installations Inner layers of Fire Resistant plasterboard can be fixed at 600mm maximum centres but outer layer must be fixed at 300mm maximum centres to the metal framework with the appropriate screw. All layers of Fire Resistant plasterboard should be fixed with all joints staggered.

Construction The Speedline Shaft Encasement System is installed from the non shaft side using I Stud framing.

Fix Extra Deep (70mm leg) track to ceiling with suitable fixings spaced at 600mm maximum centres. Fix either standard or 32mm leg track along the floor with suitable fixings spaced at 600mm maximum centres. For 94mm and 148mm tracks we recommend two rows of staggered fixings at 600mm maximum centres.

Coreboard nominally 595mm wide by either 19mm or 25mm thick is cut to length 25mm less than the overall height for standard track and 32mm for 32mm leg track. The Coreboard is located between the I Studs and secured using shaft encasement brackets spaced at 600mm maximum centres.

The 25mm or 32mm gap is left at the top of the partition.

Fire Resistant plasterboard packers 100mm deep are screw fixed to the coreboard at the head of the partition.

It is important that the packers are tight against the head track and that the packers fill the full width of the track.

Construction Establish the depth of the cavity and fix wall liner track WL60 at 600mm centres to the floor and ceiling with the shallow leg towards the wall. At max 800mm centre, fix brackets – AWL03, AWL04 or AWL08 – to the wall.

Cut Wall Liner Section WL507 to length and slot it into the top and bottom track. Adjust brackets to suit board tolerances before final tightening, then fix with self-drilling screws to the side of the Wall Liner Section. If a bracket protrudes beyond the face, simply bend the overhang over. Fix plasterboard using correct length drywall screws.

Single Layer Boarding When using single layer plasterboard, be sure to fix the bound edges at right angles to the ceiling furring sections and lightly butt adjoining edges. Staggered by half a board length, end joints must occur at the centre of the ceiling furring channel, leaving a gap of up to 3mm between ends of boards. The plasterboard is screw-fixed to the ceiling furring sections. When using a double layer of plasterboard, the first layer is fixed as shown. The second layer should be fixed with all joints staggered in relation to the first layer and screwed to the ceiling furring and edge channels, avoiding the screws used to fix the first layer.

Sound Insulation The Speedline MF Ceiling System offers excellent acoustic performance for airborne sound (Rw) and impact (Lnw) and will improve the sound insulation of both timber and concrete floors. Results are variable andmainly dependent on the depth of the ceiling void and the type of structure to which the system is fixed.

Acoustic Hangers The important factors in maximising the improvements are cavity depth, insulation and acoustic hangers. Considerable sound improvement can be achieved by suspending a Spedline MF System using acoustic hangers – AAH01B or AAH02B – which de-couple the floor from the ceiling.

61

MF Ceiling Installations

Ceiling Lift MF Ceiling Installations are becoming increasingly common in the domestic market, primarily in houses and apartments. When they are installed in small rooms with low ceiling voids – particularly where rooms have been well sealed and are airtight – in a minority of cases, movement of the metal components in the ceiling has caused unacceptable noise, typically when doors are opened and closed.

To overcome this problem, in all domestic situations Speedline recommend that the AMF9 Pre-formed Clip is not used and that the SMF5 Ceiling Furring Section is attached to the SMF7 Primary Channel using two self-drilling dry wall pan head screws per connection.

Fire Resistance Our MF Ceiling System has been tested at the Building Research Establishment to BS 476; part 23: 1987. The tests were conducted under steel beams that supported pre-cast concrete slabs and the tests used various densities and brands of fire resistant wallboards.

Please contact your nearest Speedline stockist for specific details.

A further test has also been conducted to EN 136-2:2000 under a loaded timber floor using 2 layers of 12.5mm fire resistant wallboard with minimum board mass of 10kg/m2. The result achieved in test no 224468 is 88 minutes duration of effective protection.

brackets that make it much easier to achieve a true flat surface.

The system offers improved sound and fire performance and avoids the risk of cracking due to boards being directly fixed to timbers which may be subject to movement.

The Speedline Ceiling Lining System provides an extremely convenient means of creating a cavity to accommodate services, without potentially weakening the overall structure by drilling joists.

Fix plasterboards with long edges at right angles to Ceiling Liner WL507 and fix to framing with drywall screws at 230mm maximum centres and, at perimeter ends of plasterboard, at 150mm maximum centres.

Ensure drywall screws penetrate the section by a minimum of 10mm and, if a dual layer system is used, that all joints in the second board layer are staggered in relation to those of the first layer. Joists may be uneven even in new buildings and such problems are commonly encountered in renovation work, particularly in older properties.

To compensate for any unevenness, our Ceiling Lining system uses adjustable metal

Construction Fix perimeter channel WL60 at 600mm centres maximum and – depending on the plasterboard being used – support the Ceiling liner WL507 at centres of between 400mm. Ceiling liner WL507 must be spaced at 400 or 450mm centres, see Metal Framing Centres and Fixing Bracket/Timber Connector Centres on Page 63.

Position fixing brackets – AWL03B, AWL04B or AWL08B – to timber joists or concrete. For large areas of ceiling use connector AWL05B to join the Ceiling Liner WL507 together.

Timber connectors are also available, reference AWL06 and AWL07 which allow fixing to the side pf timber beams – See Page 63.

Often used in commercial and domestic situations and suited to both new-build and refurbishment projects, our Ceiling Lining System is suitable for most internal applications.

It can be used under timber or concrete flooring with any proprietary gypsum plasterboard and cavities can contain an insulation material.

CeilingsResilient Bar

71

Ceilings Resilient Bar

The sound insulation performance of some ceiling systems is dependent upon the attachment of a Resilient Bar RB565 to the underside of the joists and perimeter noggins on all four sides of room. The Speedline Resilient Bar is fixed at right angles to the joists at 450mm maximum centres for single or double applications. subject to the board being attached is a maximum of 900mm wide.

When 1200mm wide board is being used the Resilient Bar will need to reduce to 400mm centres.

Bars are joined by butting together under the timber beam.

Plasterboards are fixed with long edges at right angles to Resilient Bars at 230mm centres using Drywall self-tapping screws which should penetrate the Resilient Bar by a minimum of 10mm

The Speedline Resilient Bar is designed to offer improved acoustic insulation when constructing a conventional ceiling under timber joists. Mineral wool insulation can be included in the floor cavity to improve acoustic performance. To ensure maximum sound insulation performance, screws fixing the plasterboard must not be in contact with the joists. When installing a dual layer of boards, all joints in the second layer must be staggered in relation to those of the first layer.

The following were tested as floor applications under timber beams 235mm x 50mm spaced at 450mm centres with 15mm OSB fixed to the top of the joists.

Each ceiling was boarded with an inner layer of 19mm standard plasterboard (plank) and an outer layer of 12.5mm sound resistant wallboard. 100mm glass mineral wool was infilled into the joist cavities.

The Speedline floating floor system offers excellent acoustic improvement for both airborne and impact sound transfer.

This system is ideal for residential conversions and refurbishments of older properties to upgrade existing timber floors. It can also be used to improve sound insulation from upper floors in new build projects.

Benefits• Minimal increase in floor depth• Ideal for conversion work &

refurbishment• Suitable for any size timber joist• Improvement of sound insulation• Floor floats independent of original

structure• Fast and simple to fit• Cost effective

Construction

Flooring Fit self adhesive resilient tape along the length of each joist.

On top of the resilient raft tape place a floor zed section each side of the joist with the large flange on top of the beam. For smaller joists it may be necessary to overlap the flanges of the floor zed section. On larger joists there can be a gap between the sections. To help installation it may help to secure floor joist sections into place by fixing with an occasional temporary screw.

19mm plank is cut neat (not tight) to fit between the floor zed sections. The next board should be butted tightly to the previous board.

The timber flooring is then laid across the top at 90o to the floor zed sections and screw fixed through the plank and into the bottom flange of the floor zed section using suitable screws. It is important to ensure that any temporary screws are removed from the floor zed sections before fitting the timber flooring and that no fixings are allowed to connect the floor zed section to the timber joist through the timber flooring.

A 5mm clearance gap must be left at perimeter walls which must be fully filled with acoustic mastic.

By following this procedure a completely free floating floor has been created.

Ceilings Floating Floors

Ceilings Resilient bar RB565 is fixed at right angles to the joists at maximum 450mm centres for single or double board applications.

Bars are joined by butting together under the timber joist. Plasterboards are fixed with long edges at right angles to resilient bars at 230mm centres using drywall self tapping screws which should penetrate the resilient bar by a minimum of 10mm.

To ensure maximum sound insulation performance, screws fixing the plasterboard must not be in contact with the joists. When installing double layers of plasterboard, all joints in the second layer must be staggered in relation to those of the first layer.

The addition of glass mineral wool insulation within the floor cavity will improve the acoustic performance.

Scotland has its own unique independent building standards and Speedline recognises this fact and has designed straight forward solutions to help satisfy these requirements.

These solutions should be used with Section 5: NOISE – OF THE TECHNICAL HANDBOOKS: of the Scottish Building standards.

Speedline provides examples of internal walls, separating walls, separating floors and intermediate floor constructions. These provide a solution to meeting aspects of Standard 5.1 and Standard 5.2. When built correctly, and designed with flanking elements taken into consideration should meet the sound performance levels given in 5.1.2 and 5.2.1 of the TECHNICAL HANDBOOKS.

For resilient bars to be approved for use in Robust Detail separating floors they must be tested as detailed in Appendix E of the Robust Details Handbook. The testing procedure consists of testing a standard floor construction without resilient bars and then testing the same standard floor with the addition of resilient bars installed between the floor joists and the plasterboard ceiling. Both airborne sound and impact sound tests are carried out on both floor constructions.

The required minimum improvements for the floor with resilient bars attached compared to the floor without resilient bars is 17 dB improvement in airborne sound insulation (Rw + Ctr) and 16 dB improvement in impact sound insulation (Lw). The Speedline RB565 resilient bar has achieved these minimum standards.

Speedline RB565 resilient bar can be used in Robust Detail separating floors without the need for on-site acoustic testing.

Best Practice

Door HeaderInstallation Details Set out in this section are Best Practice Solutions for the more common issues.

Socket Detailing The acoustic, intumescent putty pad is designed for lining electrical socket boxes in partition wall constructions. The mouldable putty pads easily fit socket boxes to reduce sound travel through partition walls and provide fire performance.

Cutting an electrical socket opening in a partition wall can reduce its acoustic performance and resistance to fire, which could therefore result in non-compliance with Part E and Part B Building Regulations.

Speedline Putty Pads are the acoustically tested, intumescent solution, complying with Building Regulations Part E and Part B

Health & Safety Product Information

Products Cold rolled sections manufactured from pre galvanised mild steel. Some sections may be manufactured from pre painted material.

Product Use Always use products for the purpose intended as described in our technical literature.

When subjected to elevated temperatures during welding or cutting, toxic fumes are produced. Inhalation of these may cause metal fume fever, a short lasting condition with symptoms similar to those of influenza. Therefore adequate ventilation or fume extraction should be provided, and where necessary, protective masks should be worn.

If skin irritation occurs, rinse well with clean cold water, then wash thoroughly. If symptoms persist obtain medical advise.

In the event of eye contamination or if any product is swallowed seek medical advise immediately.

Metal products may have sharp corners and edges which can cause lacerations. Always use suitable gloves when handling.

When working overhead or when cutting metal products, the use of protective eye glasses is advisable.

Metal is a good conductor of electricity. Proper precautions should be taken when working near live power lines or electrical equipment.

Metal can become charged. Static electricity may cause sparks when earthed.

Personal hygiene is important, always wash hands well particularly before eating.

The inclusion of other components without prior approval or constructed on site contrary to this document will invalidate test certification and system performance.

Bag it, LegallyThe Speedline Recycling service offers a quick and easy solution for disposal of gypsum waste, via just five easy steps in a fixed price solution:

1. Purchase your empty gypsum waste bags from Speedline stockists.2. Empty bags are delivered to site with your materials order.3. Load bags with gypsum plasterboard waste on site (thermal laminates

excluded).4. Full bags are collected from site following delivery of products ordered.5. Bags are weighed at branch and a report is provided for you showing

the amount of gypsum waste collected from each project site.

The waste is broken down into bulk powders which are then returned to the ground or used in other manufacturing processes. A skip service is also available.
