Standard Metal Roofing Types

Standard metal roofing comes in three common types:

– Standing seam– Corrugated profile– Stone coated panels

However all have some limitations for residential and light commercial projects

Page 11: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

• Defined pattern of clean lines with concealed fastening

• Appearance limited to standard solid color

• Not commonly consistent with residential, or traditional historical design

Page 12: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Corrugated Metal Roofing

• Corrugation adds strength and allows for weathertight overlap

• Typically less expensive and associated with agricultural and industrial buildings

• Colors limited to solid or “bare metal” galvanized

• Exposed fasteners influence appearance and leak potential

Page 13: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Stone Coated Metal Roofing

• Provides different colors or textures

• Batten system may be needed which adds cost

• Stone coating means algae growth may occur, requiring some ongoing maintenance

• Tall trees are more likely to be struck

Page 30: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

3. GREEN BUILDINGWITH TRADITIONALMETAL ROOFING

TOPICS:• Sustainable Sites• Energy and Atmosphere• Materials and Resources

AGENDA

Page 31: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Sustainable Sites (SS)

• Natural areas reflect and disperse sunlight

• Urban areas with dark colored surfaces absorb sunlight and turn it into heat creating “urban heat islands”

• Impact can raise surrounding air temperature by as much as 5 degrees Fahrenheit

Page 32: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Sustainable Sites (SS)

• All materials will absorb and/or reflect solar radiation

• ASTM E903 and E892 are tests used to determine solar reflectance (SR) of materials– Black paint = SR of 0– Bright white = SR of 1

• Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) measures ability of materials to stay cool in sun – higher SRI, higher amount of reflection– Black surface = SRI of 0– White surface = SRI of 100

Page 33: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Sustainable Sites (SS)• Metal roofing can achieve high

SRI values– Minimize heat– Reduce urban heat islands

• Contributes to LEEDv4 credit:– Steep slope roof (greater than

2:12): manufactured SRI = 39 min.; aged SRI = 32 min.

• Manufacturers can provide SRI test result data

Page 34: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Energy and Atmosphere (EA)

• Specifying a “cool roof” can have a direct impact on the building’s energy use and interior environment

• Metal roofing system with a proper slope is often used as an ideal base to support solar panels

• These factors can help model reduced energy use in the building or contribute to the design of an onsite renewable energy system

Page 35: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Materials and Resources (MR)

• A LEED prerequisite is to reduce the amount of construction and demolition waste by recycling, recovering, or reusing building materials

• Any excess or scrap steel is recyclable at the factory

• Metal roofing contains a substantial percentage of recycled content

Page 36: Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials · 2019-03-26 · Metal Roofing with the Appearance of Traditional Materials More variety and more sustainability is now

Materials and Resources (MR)

• A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is used to support LEED MR credit

• Manufacturers use an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) to show impacts at all stages of life of product– raw materials to product

delivery– raw materials to end of life
