Infants and toddlers are welcome at all services, but, as parents desire, may also be lovingly cared for by trained staff in our nursery/wiggle room on the first floor of the Parish Hall between 8:45 a.m. and noon on Sun-day mornings, and for other events as announced.
Children’s Sunday School
Sunday School for children ages three through twelve is offered at 9:15 a.m. in designated areas on the sec-ond floor of the Parish Hall through Sunday, May 21.
We use the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum developed at Virginia Theological Semi-nary, and our children have received and responded well to this program.
Each lesson in the ECC is designed to help our children interpret and understand the covenant made in Holy Baptism, and to live the Christian life, introducing the Holy Bi-
ble, The Book of Common Prayer, the Hymnal 1982, and other age-appro-priate material and activities to help them engage with the lessons.
Children’s Chapel offers another opportunity for movement and learning by young children. Those who would like to attend, should meet at the back of the church at the sequence hymn (just before the Gos-pel reading), where they will be led to class for an age-appropriate lesson
on the readings for the day, and engage in an activity or craft. The group will return to the church in time for communion with their families.

Vestry Meeting HighlightsBy Manette Sartain Sammons, ClerkThe Vestry meeting of April 10, 2017 opened business as Treasurer Josh Pesses reviewed the church financials for the month of March 2017. Revenues are lower than expected but expenses are below budget levels. Cash balances are fine, and our investment portfolio continues to generate positive returns and is performing solidly.
A recommendation from the Finance Committee was entertained relative to the funding of three operational accounts: Property, Outreach, and the Sinking Fund. The source of the funding comes from a three-year rolling average of 5% of the applicable endowments. We will maintain similar amounts for the last several years: Property - $15,000, Outreach $60,000 and Sinking Fund - $25,000, for a total of $100,000. This was approved by motion and vote.
Manette Sammons reported that, in the Day School, a virtual reality program is being used in the STEM Lab combining science and technology for learning. The library will be updated this summer. Results of a faculty, staff, and parent survey for the accreditation process indicated two areas for improvement: 1) reduction in the amount of at-home projects and homework, and 2) target a new approach to teaching math. Catherine Harrell commended the Day School for the number of 2017 high school seniors who returned to St. James for their fifth grade class reunion.
Andy McCall reported on efforts to accomplish some of the short- term, low-cost recommendations of the Master Plan. Consideration is being given to tear down Killgore Hall to create a parking lot on the building’s foundation and to revamp the existing parking lots. This has the temporary benefit of significantly increased parking with the potential for increased revenue. A possible side benefit is providing a lay down area for construction materials while Durable Slate is performing renovations to the church.
Senior Warden Gerry Sulzer reported on the Historic Church Restoration Project. Tipton and Associates supplied an AIA draft contract and it was reviewed. They are making changes to the standard contract to be presented to Durable Slate. Chancellor Dan West participated. This project has potential to start during the
summer but there is no confirmation from Durable, yet. The organ will be the next contract secured.
Vestry members reviewed Nancy Jo Poirrier’s email suggesting church fire suppression during the renovation. The process would be to seek several companies who do this type of work, explore their process and cost. It’s a challenge for historic churches and ours is 120 years old. Research needs to be done before a decision can be made. This research will be included when we make an assessment of the church interior to define the scope and cost of interior repairs.
Interim Rector Joe D. Reynolds reported there has been very little progress relative to the music program. Father Joe is setting up a meeting with choir shortly, to let them know what he is thinking and gain additional input.
He advised the Capital Campaign is going swimmingly, and he had sent out a letter that the campaign is concluding at the end of the month, but, “We will still receive your check.”
He distributed to each member present and then reviewed an updated organization chart with accompanying notes, dated April 10, 2017. He would like to vote on it at May meeting and have the senior warden staff it by the June meeting. It would be reviewed each year. A lengthy discussion was had with the concept being well received.
Youth Director Hannah Rothermel is opening some activities to third through fifth graders to build relationships for the middle school age youth program.
Annette Holden is working diligently to improve the cleaning service. They now have a supervisor assigned to our account.
Anna Catherine Soule would like to see Sunday School classes and locations more prominently displayed on the eMessenger that comes out each Friday.
Father Howe reported Bishop Coleman was checked into the hospital with pneumonia and congestive heart failure over the weekend previous to the meeting.

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite all to join with us in ministry together in his name.
The MESSENGER is the monthly magazine of St. James Episcopal Church, containing extended news of parish programs and events.
Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, reference materials, and more at www.stjamesbr.org.
If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick up a paper copy at church and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
