Several years ago, the parking lot near the corner of Florida Street and Third Street became available for us to purchase thanks to the very generous gift of the late Barker Kilgore. The lot was purchased and we derived a monthly revenue from that lot.
Last year, two lots directly west of our church lot on Convention became available. As Father Mark put it, “It was like a three-way trade in baseball.” All the pieces had to fall together just right for everyone to take part, and the result is that we were able to make an even trade of the Florida St. lot for the two smaller lots on Convention. With this acquisition, our “footprint” on the west side of Fourth Street is now contiguous and suited to future development. This will allow us to expand for purposes we may not even know of now,
and at present we will derive night and weekend parking revenue from these lots. The Day School teachers parking will be in these lots during the day which makes the lot facing Florida behind Bishops Hall available to become part of an expanded playground. See the overhead photo on page four which details these locations and changes.
Before his untimely death, parishioner and former Senior Warden Jesse Coates sold to St. James two of his office units in the Court Four complex at the southwest corner of Florida and Fifth Streets. Later, four more units were purchased from Miles Pollard and he generously donated a fifth unit. We presently own eleven of

the sixteen units in Court Four, and are in the process of obtaining the last five, believing this should happen in the very near future.
The line has already formed for school and church groups wanting space in the building! An opening from the playground has already been created and renovations are being made that will allow the school to use some of the units right away.
We offer special thanks to Randy Garrett who did all the legal work for us, and to Don Capron who did the property evaluations. We are very blessed to have so many parishioners willing to give of their time and talents.
Another summer project as been to secure all our properties with a brick and wrought
iron fence, in keeping with the church architecture, along Florida Blvd from Court Four to Bishops Hall. A second wrought iron fence is being installed from the corner of Bishops Hall down Fourth Street to the Parish Hall building (Atkinson Hall) completing enclosure of the block.
God surely had a hand in all these different properties coming available at the same time and has great plans for St. James. Now, we have to be good stewards of the church campus and use it for God’s work. It is big, it is beautiful and we should be very proud of it.
Of course all of this has come with a sig-nificant financial investment, but as we learned from past experience, in our
downtown, closed environment, the prop-erty has to be bought when available. As the campus grows so does the cost of maintaining these buildings and grounds. Your vestry, finance committee and invest-ment committee have worked diligently to be good stewards of the church’s money. It is you, your generous giving and your hard work that make our church so special.

Grateful thanks and apprecia-tion are extended to the many volun-teers associated with the second suc-cessful season of Summer Sounds at St. James — particularly noted should be Barbara Sims and Allen Paterson who were extensively involved in booking our performers, and Allen and Rod-ger Green who developed and worked sound design.
Many thanks also to our hosts and hostesses, and especially to our Patrons and Friends whose faith and action with their generous support helped bring another summer of musical and visual enjoyment to the Baton Rouge community, inviting those known and unknown inside the doors of St. James Church: Patrons — Fred Kroenke, Sunny McCoy, Rieta & Ben Reiser, Margaret Parker & Juan Barroso, Anonymous, Barbara Sims; Friends — Fran Huber & Mike Katchmer, Jane & Mickey Christensen, Shawn O’Brien, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph D. Richard, Pat Colquette, Katherine Rayne, Susan & John Ozier, Tamara M. Santiago, Liz & Mark Holland, Mary Ann Garrett, Nancy Bogan, Jerry Lynn & Jeff Mills, Pat & Don Lyle.
It’s Sabbath Time for Fr. Mark HollandBy the Very Rev. J. Mark Holland
“What will Fr. Mark do on his sabbatical?” This is a question I hear a lot lately. It’s also a fair question for my parishioners to ask.
For me taking a sabbatical leave is all about immersing myself in Sabbath time. It is meant to be a time of intentional separation from the parish to replenish my spirit and nourish my soul. It is an opportunity to slow down from the normal hectic pace we experience at St. James and gain a new perspective on my life and my ministry as a priest. Taking a sabbatical gives me the personal space to dream a little bit and then focus my vision on what might be next for St. James.
So how does this process take place? For a couple of weeks, I will just unwind and decompress. However, I do have specific plans for my sabbatical. I intend to make a week-long retreat at a monastery in Boston where one of my classmates from seminary is a monk. I plan on spending a couple of days in Washington D.C. as I have never visited our nation’s capitol. I want to sit inside the National Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul and worship on a Sunday morning. I hope to spend an entire day or two wandering about and getting lost in the Smithsonian Institute.
There will be time for me to reconnect with friends who are dear but far away. My son’s godfather lives in Birmingham, Alabama and we plan on going fly-fishing this fall. We’ve not seen each other in more than five years. I will also do some offshore fishing in the Gulf with another priest-
friend from the Diocese of Louisiana. The fishing is fun but the fellowship of spending time in deep conversation with a close friend is the real blessing.
I have family in Dallas and Shreveport that I seldom get to see since I usually work on weekends. It’s been more than twenty years since I’ve been back to Louisiana Tech University. Because I am a graduate of La Tech, there is a brick with my name on it in Centennial Plaza and I’d like to see it.
To feed my soul, I plan on worshipping in a variety of other church traditions. This will allow me to hear others preach the gospel and challenge me personally. This past year I’ve made a number of new friends through Together Baton Rouge. I intend to worship God in some of their churches on Sunday mornings.
At home, I have grand plans on whittling down the never ending “honey do” list. Since I will have the time, I look forward to the chance to refine my culinary skills by preparing the evening meals at our home. My sabbatical will be a time to get rid of things I’ve held onto but no longer need. I can empty closets and drawers of stuff I’d never wear again.
So, in a nutshell, there will be traveling, spending time with family and loved ones. There will be opportunities to clean out the clutter and make room for new experiences in life. I’m grateful for this gift in my life and I thank St. James for making it possible. I’ll see you on November first!
We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.
