Dear Friends,This past week the staff here at Huffman UMCpracticed their first “Severe Weather Drill.”Although the Daycare has their own storm preparedness procedures, we had never (to anyone’s memory) practiced an emergency plan asa church staff.Coordinated with the 10am test of the JeffersonCounty emergency sirens, we learned a number of things. First, we realized that from inside ourbuilding, you cannot hear the sirens at all. This wassurprising since the nearest siren is only a fewblocks away at Huffman Middle School. What this tells us is that we need to install a couple ofweather radios that will enable us to hear an alertshould we come under a storm warning. In staffmeeting, we also recognized a need to check thestairwell lighting on the parlor side of the sanctuaryto make sure we have battery backups.The good news is that our drill went without ahitch. Our staff, the UMW and the Children’schapel children moved safely and efficiently totheir designated safe areas.What are the safe areas in case of storm emergency? If you are in the Welcome Center, thesafe area is the church library on the first flooraround the corner from the welcome center lobby.If you are in the Fellowship Hall or the Educationbuilding, the safe area is the downstairs hallwaywhere the nurseries are located. If you are in thesanctuary, parlor, or choir rooms, the safe area is inthe classroom area adjacent to the DownstairsDining Room.The safety of our children, congregation and staff isof paramount importance. My thanks go to ourstaff for designing and implementing the SevereWeather plan for our church!Blessings,Brother EdPs. Family Promise of Birmingham Host Week

We are hosting the guests of Family Promise of Birmingham the week of May 17 through themorning of May 24. We need volunteers to set upthe rooms on May 17 immediately following themorning worship service (setting up and makingthe beds for the guest rooms). Meals are covered,but we still need at least two overnight hosts forSunday, Wednesday and Saturday nights and volunteers to help clean the rooms on Sunday,May 24 at approximately 8:00 am (beds willalready be gone, but rooms need to be vacuumedand the showers/bathroom areas need to be cleaned). To volunteer for any of the responsi-bilities listed, or if you have never volunteeredbefore and have questions, please feel free to callme.
