2018-2020 Biennium Issue Two- December 2019 The Voice of District 17 Message from the District Governor 2019 is soon coming to an end. It seems that the year has just started and how can time flies so fast? It is impossible to capture time. But it is possible to capture moments of the past through our mind memories and to treasure our present, family friends and Zonta. This is a year of Zonta activities. In celebration of our centennial year our area and clubs have created many innovative celebration ideas and integrating them into club service, advocacy activities and fund raising ideas. As I join the activities or perhaps looking at the joyful faces of photos and social media postings sent to me, I cannot help but feel our members for the passion of Zonta’s vision and mission can be such a powerful force when we are aligned. This powerful force emerges spontaneously when there is a common belief in our hearts. This biennium by November, District 17 clubs and individual members have donated US$399,539.- to Zonta International Foundation. Of which US$167,238.- is designated to the endowment fund. Our total contributions to ZIF inclusive of CAEC increase by 20.6% and ahead of all districts. As Zonta International is still short of US$2 million from original goal of US$5 million, please see if more donations can be solicited. We have closed our 20 th District 17 Conference with overwhelming participation and success. We have recorded all the activities and happy memories in the issue of the newsletter. As Christmas bell rings and Santa Claus waving at us throughout the city I feel blessed to be surrounded and supported by friends from Zonta. Wish you and family the most joyful Christmas and a very healthy and rewarding 2020. Teresa Lin District Governor 2018-2020 Written at Christmas Eve 2019

Message from the District Governor

2019 is soon coming to an end. It seems that the year has just started and how can time flies so fast? It is

impossible to capture time. But it is possible to capture moments of the past through our mind memories and

to treasure our present, family friends and Zonta.

This is a year of Zonta activities. In celebration of our centennial year our area and clubs have created many

innovative celebration ideas and integrating them into club service, advocacy activities and fund raising

ideas. As I join the activities or perhaps looking at the joyful faces of photos and social media postings sent

to me, I cannot help but feel our members for the passion of Zonta’s vision and mission can be such a

powerful force when we are aligned. This powerful force emerges spontaneously when there is a common

belief in our hearts.

This biennium by November, District 17 clubs and individual members have donated US$399,539.- to Zonta

International Foundation. Of which US$167,238.- is designated to the endowment fund. Our total

contributions to ZIF inclusive of CAEC increase by 20.6% and ahead of all districts. As Zonta International

is still short of US$2 million from original goal of US$5 million, please see if more donations can be

solicited.

We have closed our 20th District 17 Conference with overwhelming participation and success. We have

recorded all the activities and happy memories in the issue of the newsletter.

As Christmas bell rings and Santa Claus waving at us throughout the city I feel blessed to be surrounded and

supported by friends from Zonta. Wish you and family the most joyful Christmas and a very healthy and

rewarding 2020.

Workshop Resolutions There were 3 concurrent workshops held in the first day of district conference. For each workshop, the participants have proposed resolutions and they were all adapted: Workshop 1: Nurturing Women’s Talents in Science and Technology Supports shall be focused in 3 major areas:

1. Education To provide supports by establishing role models, mentorship programs, and scholarship programs, such as the Zonta “Women in Technology” award program.

2. Career Development To encourage engagement in international conferences in order to widen exposure; to create goal-oriented network in order to widen opportunities for personal advancement and understanding of career objectives.

3. Workplace Conditions To advocate work-life balance, flexible working hours, available ancillary facilities such as daycare centers for both government and private employments.

Speaker of workshop 1: Ms. Aisa Mijeno (photo on the left), Ms. Rosanna Ho (photo on the left) and Professor Nancy Ip (third from the right of the photo on the right).

Workshop 2: Bringing up-and-coming Professionals to the Zonta Community We need to bring to the Zonta community young professionals aged 40 or below with good potential and leadership skills and who are committed to serve by reaching out to fresh graduates and colleagues including men as well as professional bodies. We need to provide a proper orientation to the young professionals on what Zonta has to offer, and the necessary support by establishing a mentorship scheme as well as to engage them in committees which match their interest so as to enhance their sense of ownership and belonging.

Speakers of workshop 2 (from left to right): Ms Helen Wong, Ms Karen Lok, Ms Naruporn ‘Kookai’ Karnchanachar and Ms Marina Wong.

Workshop 3: Enhancing Zonta’s Social Impact “ Whereas, it is Zonta’s mission and vision to empower women and girls through service and advocacy; “ Whereas, this may be achieved by undertaking projects that consider and create positive social impact which connects to Zonta’s mission and vision;

“ Whereas, Zonta clubs can attain this goal by following certain steps in initiating projects; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED: That, to best achieve their projects, Zonta clubs should follow the following steps:

1. Find out what is needed in their community. 2. Consider the interests, skills and talent of their members and the resources available to the

club. 3. In choosing a project the club should rank its priorities and assess the impact to the target

population and society. 4. The club should develop a plan setting out the framework, timeline, resources and

manpower. 5. Make a budget. 6. Club members should gain the support from the club by being practical and

realistic, considering the cost and availability of public money. 7. Get publicity by traditional media, social media and platforms from its partners; 8. Do the project.

That, Zonta clubs should consider the sustainability of the project, and its multiplier effect. “ Speakers of workshop 3 (from left to right): Dr. Margaret Wai-Ling Chung, Ms Mildred Law and Ms Cecilia Flores-Oeband. Zonta International President’s recent released message at Zonta Newsletter extracted for your

information Dear Zontians and friends, 2019 has been an exceptional and very special year for Zonta: Thousands of members across the globe gathered to celebrate Zonta's Centennial Anniversary in very different ways with hundreds of big and small events. On 8 November, exactly 100 years after Zonta was founded in Buffalo, New York, we held a centennial fundraiser, through which nearly 800 people donated US$135,250, far surpassing our goal of US$100,000. Another way to honor our history and our mission was this year’s Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women campaign. Rightfully so, because we cannot achieve gender equality if gender violence in its multiple forms persists. I had the impression that Zonta activities were even more visible in our communities than ever before. This is demonstrated by the pictures of landmark buildings lit in orange and the many reports and media articles that have already reached us. I am most grateful to everyone who has contributed to making this a successful year. In 2020, I look forward to continue working together and to celebrating all that we have accomplished by reviewing Beijing+25 and, of course, the Zonta International Convention in Chicago. I wish you all Happy Holidays and a new year with a lot of energy to make further progress toward gender equality. Thank you for your support!

Cordially, Dr. Susanne von Bassewitz, President
