It has been a settled week for students with a focus on finalising any behaviour levels and continuing to realise their academic potential in all classes. Organisation for our week hosting students from Bellingen is almost complete with a number of students taking billets and putting their names down to participate in sporting teams. It is wonderful to see such a cherished school tradition continue. As part of the annual Bellingen visit, a school social will be held on Wednesday night, students are encouraged to purchase their tickets from the school office before Wednesday to ensure they secure a ticket to the popular school event. Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students have been enjoying a food packed adventure in Sydney this week as part of their course. Accompanied by Mrs Cowan, Mrs Lawson, Mrs Lawlor and Mr Allan our students have been able to experience the hospitality industry at a level not available in our own community. Brazilian BBQ, Lebanese feasts, Greek pastries, Japanese and Gelato are some of the experiences to name a few. A huge thank you to parent supervisors Mrs Lawlor and Mr Allan your time and willingness to volunteer is greatly appreciated by the students and staff of Quirindi High School. Without parental assistance many activities would not take place for our students. Tamworth basketball continues to be a great activity provided to our students by the good will of Mr Beresford and Mr Roxborough. At present, we are struggling to get mothers to volunteer to travel to Tamworth to support the girl’s competition. If you are able to help out, your time would be most appreciated. It is important that we have a female supervisor, if we cannot assure this level of supervision the girl’s involvement may be placed in jeopardy. This week has seen the introduction of a new electronic attendance tracking system. From now on, parents and guardians will be notified via SMS on their mobile phone (or email if no mobile number is available) of their child’s absence from school on the specific day. We ask for your patience as we work through small discrepancies in the system and welcome your feedback regarding the system. If you receive a message regarding your child’s absence from school, please contact us so that we can adjust our attendance records accordingly. As always, if you have a question or query regarding your son/daughters educational experience at school please do not hesitate to contact us and make an appointment to come and see us. Student Welfare Teachers

Information for students and families

Student Welfare Teachers are employed in Public Schools to help students, their families and carers with problems that may be preventing students from making the most of their education.

Sometimes, teenagers and adults need a bit of extra support to overcome obstacles in their lives, both at school and at home. Welfare teachers can offer that support by helping to develop strategies to deal with problems.

Students might work with the Welfare Teacher if they have any problems affecting them at school. This could include worrying about school work, conflict with friends, being in trouble at school or just feeling down.

Parents and carers can arrange meeting times to seek advice about their child’s school progress, educational options including access to special education services, problems with behaviour or for information about help available from other agencies.

Student Welfare Teachers also work with other school support staff to deliver specific programs to groups of students from Year 6 to Year 11. Resilience for Life and Seasons for Growth are two such programs that will be offered to students during 2014.

Mrs Jenny Lewis is the Student Welfare Teacher at both Quirindi High School and Quirindi Public School. Students wanting to talk to Mrs Lewis can ask their teachers or the school office staff to make an appointment for them. Parents and carers can also make appointments by contacting Mrs Lewis directly.

Mrs Lewis works at Quirindi High School on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Seasons For Growth - Learning to live with change and loss.

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Quirindi High School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth.

This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.

The Seasons for Growth Group Programs will run for eight weeks, starting in Term 3 with weekly 40 minute sessions. The program concludes with a 'Celebration' session. Later in the year groups will have the opportunity to meet for two further sessions to build on their earlier learning.

If you think your son/daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth we encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program.

Quirindi High School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. If you require more information please contact Jenny Lewis through the school office.
