Message from the Chairman This year's show marks the 30th Anniversary of the Riverland Wine Show and has provided us with yet another successful event. Immediately after the judging there was a feeling the number of medals was slightly down on last year, possibly based on high expectations following the great vintage we saw in 2002. However based on the number of entries received and changes to the class structure the actual strike rate per entry was higher than last year. With the total number of medals, expressed as a percentage, increasing by 6%. This is encouraging, as the majority of the 2002 red wines will not be seen until next year. Numerous changes have taken place since Wolf Blass assembled the first panel of judges for the inaugural Riverland wine show in 1972. The show has grown to approximately 500 entries from 35 exhibitors making it one of the larger regional shows in Australia. Other changes include the introduction of a second panel in 2000, to cope with the ever-increasing number of exhibits, and the move towards centralising the show in Berri where it has been hosted for the past two years. The centralisation of the show departs from the history of shared hosting by the Show Societies of the three Riverland Centres and rotation of venues on an annual basis. The committee is constantly re-evaluating the show to make sure that it remains relevant to the community and to the Wine Industry and to this end we have re-examined our aims and objectives. We currently see our role is to 1) Promote excellence in wines from the Riverland Region and improve awareness of its quality within the industry and the market place. 2) Provide a showcase for exhibition of the regions wines. 3) Provide a nucleus for other associated activities promoting the Riverland. 4) Educate the public and wine industry personnel. 5) Provide a forum for the development of styles and varieties with emphasis on those suited to warm climate regions. To enable us to achieve these goals we need to take two major steps, firstly to clearly identify the stakeholders in the show and secondly to stream line the running of the show. We are already well down this path, two public meetings have endorsed the drafting of a new constitution that encompasses all of the existing partners into a single society. A central committee will host the annual show on an annual basis at a central location. However, the proposed changes are accompanied with some challenges, the hosting of the wine show by the Show Societies has provided a great deal of security over the past thirty years and it is important that the spirit of cooperation between the Wine Industry, Food and Wine Groups and The Show Societies continues into the future. I would encourage all interested parties to support these developments and to become active members in the society on its formation early in the New Year. Assuring you of out best attention as we look forward to the next 30 years. Stephen Cook Chairman Page 1

This year's show marks the 30th Anniversary of the Riverland Wine Show and has provided uswith yet another successful event.
