A message from EOU Foundation President Lyle Schwarz:

As President of the Eastern Oregon University Foundation I would like to thank all of our donors. 2005 was a record year for the Foundation- our most successful fund raising year outside of the EOU Science Center Campaign.

We owe our success to the generous community members, alumni and friends of EOU who give each year to sup-port education at Eastern Oregon University. Having been a faculty member for over 30 years and now serving as the President of the Foundation I know that EOU is indeed a remarkable and completely unique university. I strongly believe there is no greater gift that you and I can give and no greater cause to support than education at EOU.

2005 was a very productive year for the EOU Foundation. First of all, the EOU Foundation underwent significant reorganization and upgrades. We have updated and improved our scholarship awarding process and revised all of our business practices including computerized accounting system. The benefits of all of this work include greater transparency and accountability to our donors and more efficient operations, which allow us to raise more money to support EOU and its students.

Despite our progress, EOU and the EOU Foundation still face many challenges as the cost of education rises each year. Oregon students now pay $5,860 annually in tuition- a daunting figure for many families looking to pay the bills this year. While Eastern is still one of the best values in the country, the Foundation leadership is firmly committed to helping present and future students manage the burden.

In 2005 over a 1,000 donors chose to support EOU. I believe that this record number of donors will be exceeded in 2006 and future years. As more people give, the Foundation will increase its support to EOU, paving the way for an even brighter future. Together, we can make incredible strides in building the future of Oregon.

Meeting Our GoalsTotal assets of the EOU Foundation reached an all-time high of $2,921,290 in 2005, an increase from $2,746,858 in 2004. This increase of was made possible by generous donations from a record number of 1114 donors who gave $426,683.

In 2005 the EOU Foundation provided over $116,000 in scholarships to EOU students. In addition, eight generous donors established new scholarships with the foundation.

Daniel Rama Memorial ScholarshipDave and Judy Rama, of Baker City, established the Daniel Rama Memorial Scholarship in honor of their son who was killed in a vehicle accident on June 21, 2002. Rama was a firefighter working for Grayback Forestry, traveling to Colorado to help fight the Hayman fire when the accident occurred. Four other firefighters were also killed. The $2,000 Daniel Rama Memorial Scholarship is intended to help an EOU student who has firefighting experience and has financial need.

Jeanne Kincaid Rogers Education Scholarship In 2005, Lisa Mangum, of La Grande, established the Jeanne Kincaid Rogers Education Scholarship in honor of Lisa’s aunt,

who was a teacher in eastern Oregon for many years. Rogers set an example of service and quality education in her teaching career. The $1,000 scholarship established with the EOU Foundation will be awarded to a current student studying music at Eastern.

Darcy Justine Howlett Memorial ScholarshipDarcy Justine Howlett passed away on August 3, 2005 at the age of 22. A 2000 graduate of Rainier High School, Howlett chose to continue her education at EOU, majoring in psychology and history. She cared a great deal for the outdoors, working as a packer and wrangler and introducing many people to the Eagle Cap Wilderness. She had a sincere desire to use her education in conjunction with horses and the outdoors to help at-risk youth. After her death, family and community contributors established the Darcy Justine Howlett Memorial Scholarship. The fund will

provide at least one scholarship per year to EOU students studying history or psychology. Preference for the scholarship will be given to a graduate of Rainier High School who plans to major in history, psychology, or shows interest in outdoor recreation.

Julie A. Geraci Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship The Julie A. Geraci Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship fund was established by Geraci’s friends and family as a tribute to her passion and dedication to music. She took voice and piano lessons and was a member of the Community Chorus from the group’s inception. She sang soprano and was a vital member of the choir. Her favorite activities were centered on music, either as a participant or an observer. Geraci passed away suddenly in October 2004.

The fund provides one $750 award each year. Preference will be given to talented vocal students wishing to study music at EOU.

Planning for the Future

While 2005 was a benchmark year for the Foundation, greater resources are needed each year to support EOU and its students.

Unrestricted revenue, including gifts, trust income and interest, and royal-ties, allows the Foundation to hold and distribute funds for nearly every academic and extracurricular programs on campus. In addition, unrestricted revenue supports Foundation schol-arships, EOU programs and faculty, alumni programs, fund raising and operations of the Foundation.

While both restricted and unrestrict-ed revenue are increasing as shown right, an emphasis on unrestricted fund raising is needed to ensure that the Foundation can meet its goals.

In 1929, a fl ame was lit at Eastern Oregon Normal School that became a beacon of knowledge, community and tradition. Symbolized by a torch carried by the Queen of Knowledge crowned at the annual Evensong Ceremony, this fl ame burned

bright as generations of students attended Eastern. Honoring our past and blazing our way into the future, Eastern Oregon University, the EOU Foundation and the Alumni As-sociation have begun to feed the fi re once again. The Ignite the Future campaign has been launched by the EOU Foundation with a goal to raise $2 million by the end of 2008 to reignite to keep the fi re burning bright at Eastern for generations to come. Gifts to the campaign will help lead Eastern into the future, providing funding for critical needs of the university and for new initiatives. Most importantly, gifts support EOU students – the reason that the foundation exists – they are the future of EOU, our region and our world.
