Police said, the victim Akil Kannan, 35, a native of Dindigul, was sharing the apartment along with five of his friends in VOC Street at Valsara- vakkam. His friend, Karthikeyan, 34, who too works as an assistant director, and Akil were engaged in an argu- ment after the former was watch- ing television in high decibel last night. The verbal duel turned into an ugly fist fight and Akil sustained severe head injuries. Immediately, his friends staying in the apartment rushed him to a nearby hospital and he returned home after getting treated for his injuries. It was learnt that Akil was drunk at the time of the incident. After sometime, his friends found his body motionless and with low pulse rate. The paramedics in an 108 ambulance confirmed that Akil succumbed to the injuries around 4 am, police said. Akil was married and has wife and two sons residing at their native. Akil worked as assistant director in yet to be released movie, Annadurai. Subsequently, Valsaravakkam po- lice registered a case and arrested Karthik in connection with the murder. HC dismisses petition against Mersal q Slams lawyer for giving publicity to film NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 27: The Madras High Court today dismissed a petition filed seeking to revoke the censor certificate granted to Vijay-starrer Mersal. A petition was filed by an advocate Aswathaman seeking a ban on the film for the ‘controversial’ dialogues about GST and Digital India. Hearing the petition today, Justice Sundaresh and Justice Sundar said, ‘Can you target one film for that? If you really stand for social good, then go protest against untouchability, go protest against social evils.’ The movie starring Vijay, Kajal Aggar- wal, Samantha, Vadivelu and Nithya Menen had offended the BJP for its dialogues on GST and Digital India. Since the movie had got a certificate from the CBFC, BJP leaders had initially demanded that two scenes from the movie should be cut. The judges asked the petitioner, ‘Do you know how many people in India are malnourished? Opposition leaders have spoken against demonetisation. So, can we put a case on them for it? ‘Some films have scenes where the hero steals from the rich and gives it to the poor. If you really care about social good, you could come to court about scenes where people are drinking and smoking. You could come to court for disabled people being depicted badly. Instead you’re coming for this,’ they said. The petitioner then argued that the dia- logues had nothing to do with the movie’s focus. Reminding the petitioner that he was only giving publicity to the film, the court said that Mersal is only a film and not real life. Freedom of expres- sion is for all. HURDLES BEFORE COPS l Most sites operate from abroad l Lack of technology l Huge money, manpower needed l Lack of cooperation at various levels ‘It is a cumbersome procedure where the authorities have to wire the information to a central agency (CERT), which, in turn, communicates to its counterparts located in a particular country and gets reply’ HOW ONLINE PIRACY OF FILMS IS THRIVING q Cyber crime cell unable to act due to multiple issues q All cases filed in 1 year are ‘pending’ NIVEDHIKA KRISHNAN Chennai, Oct 27: The cyber crime cell attached to the city police receives 20 odd cases related to video piracy every year. Apparently, the wing has classified all such cases as ‘pending’, which means, none has been resolved so far. The video piracy issue showed its ugly face again when some medical professionals allegedly shared the links of actor Vijay’s new movie Mersal in the social media and other sites, mark- ing their silent protest against the film. Although the film fraternity made a huge cry over the issue, the wing re- mained as a silent observer throughout. ‘We have not received any com- plaint from the film producer or individuals related to the movie’, an official attached to the wing states. Speaking on the poor conviction rate related to piracy, he says, ‘It is tough to track down those involved in piracy as sites can be operated from any part of the world. The whole work of posting piracy link of a movie is car- ried out from the overseas’. Explaining the process, he says, ‘Our theatre screens are embedded with unique codes, divulging from theatre’s name to the screen number. If a film is captured inside a theatre here, the fraudster will be easily caught. Interestingly, this technology is not available in other foreign coun- tries. As the movie gets first released in overseas before here, it gives an added advantage to the pirates.’ The reluctance of officials here to negotiate with other countries is cited as a primary reason. ‘It is a cumber- some procedure where the authorities have to wire the information to a central agency (CERT), which, in turn, com- municates to its counterparts located in a particular country and gets reply. Also, India has not signed treaty with all the countries in the world.’ After press- ing hard, the Tamilnadu Producers Film Council established ‘Video Piracy Units’ at various pockets of the State and recently nabbed a TamilGun.com administrator in the city. On this, the official reveals, ‘He is a small fish among sharks in the ocean. He was giving hyperlink to the pirated movies in his website. He utilised it as a tool to increase traction towards the site, merely to increase advertisements and revenue. During interrogation, he was only informing us about various websites and the piracy links contained in them.’ Interestingly, many popular torrent sites are active with content, but re- main without generating any revenue. ‘It is based on the ideology that eve- rything on this earth should be made available free to others’, he says. Refuting the claims that fraudsters are untouchable, he says, ‘We can track a website with the domain and identify its owner too. Not necessarily, he has the server at the same part of the world where he is living. In order to nab him, a dedicated team has to be sent to that particular country, for which money and manpower have to be spent.’ Save North Chennai, says Kamal Haasan q Prevent Kosasthalai river from encroachment q ‘Join hands to protect Ennore creek’ Minister denies State Fisheries Minister D Jaya- kumar denied the allegations of Kamal Haasan. NT Bureau Chennai, Oct 27: Actor Kamal Haasan, who is express- ing his concerns for issues affecting the lives of common public these days, today tweeted his apprehensions that efforts are being made to encroach 1000 acres of land near Kosasthalaiyar and Ennore creek in north Chennai. Making a series of tweets, the ac- tor, who expressed his intentions to take a political plunge recently, wrote, ‘Instead of blaming the government after a debacle, here is an opportunity to act in advance. Let’s not ignore Ennore creek, which may become a threat to north Chennai. He said, ‘The Kosasthalaiyar is the source of survival for fishermen. This is longer than the Adyar and Cooum. Unfortunately the creek of it has been encroached to an extent of 1090 acres by selfish people’. Kamal further said, Vallur Thermal Plant and North Chennai Power Plant are dumping their waste at the river, environmentalists have voiced against this consistently. But all have so far fallen on deaf ears. Adding to this Bharath Petroleum and Hindus- tan Petroleum have set up facilities at the river’s exit to the sea.’ He alleged that that in pretext of expanding Kamarajar Port, efforts are on to encroach 1000 acres of land near the creek. He said the government should give priority not just for those involved in real estate business, but also to poor and downtrodden. He also said that the entire north Chennai and around 10 lakh people will suffer in case of rains. In another tweet, Kamal Haasan, said, the travails of those living in Kattukuppam, Mugathuvarakuppam and Sivanpadai Veedhi should be highlighted and made sure that their problems are addressed at the earliest.
