Dear parents and friends of the school, Secondary Excursion Secondary students accompanied by Mr Glazebrook, Mr Robey, Mr Atkins and Miss Buchanan travelled by car, train, bus and plane to Hobart for their major excursion. They were all very excited and many apprehensive to be flying for the first time. Now they are seasoned travel-lers. Students really extended their studies particularly in Geography and History. It is fantastic to see staff and students working so well together. Primary Social Last Friday night saw Years 4/5/6 dress up for their an-nual Christmas social. We used the new Hall for the first time and really appreciated the great sound system.

Work experience Last week Miss Buchanan and Mr Glazebrook took Years 9 and10 to Albury for work experience. The stu-dents had excellent placements with Bernard working at Granata’s on Dean St, Bonnie at Border Pets and Aquar-ium, Daysee-Mae in Myer Administration and Breannan at Woodlands Child Care Centre. The group stayed in cabins at a park in Albury and enjoyed the social night opportunities with ten pin bowling, a night market and swimming at the accommodation.

K/1/2 Play and Speech Afternoons Primary students have recently had very successful events, well attended by parents. Two speech afternoons were held where students pre-sented the speeches that they have been learning with Mrs Stein. This program has been very successful as can be seen in the standard of oral presentation that the stu-dents achieve, not only with their individual and group pieces but also with the confidence and skill that they display when performing any public speaking. We thank Mrs Stein very much for her care and diligence. 2012 2012 will bring some significant changes with the next step in our progression towards a new model of deliver-ing secondary education in Oaklands and Urana. This year we have been joining together in a range of ways to enhance opportunities for our students. We extended our elective options and delivered these subjects from both schools also utilising staff from both schools. There were some video conference combinations and we brought the students together for sporting and social occasions. In 2012 the schools will forge even closer links with one principal overseeing education in both schools. In this way two small secondary departments will be able to take advantage of expertise from the staff of both schools and work towards common goals. Ms Vicki Harris has been appointed for one year to un-dertake this project. She most recently has been sec-onded from her school, Albury Public School, to take on the role of liaison officer for a Regional position. She has a long history in a diverse range of educational set-tings and will bring with her a wealth of experience. We can look forward to an exciting period of possibilities as the schools explore the opportunities of working outside the square to provide a contemporary, engaging and in-novative model of education in Oaklands and Urana. Secondary Christmas Cooking The secondary students have been very busy this last week cooking . They have made little shortbread Christmas trees and some spec-tatcular gingerbread Christmas trees. These would be great table centre arrange-ments for Christmas

Swimming School 2012 Swimming School will begin on Wednesday 1st Febru-ary. K/1/2 will go to the pool at 12:50 and Years 3/4/5/6 at 1:40pm. K/1/2 will have lunch at 12:00noon. Kinder-garten children may be picked up at school at 1:50pm if parents wish. The note for this will come home on day 1 and must be returned the next day if you wish your child to take part. The cost this year will be $15 per student. This year we are hoping to employ Caz Swann for the Learn to Swim hour each day and we may be looking for a ‘Jordan minder’ on a roster basis. This is just to put you into the picture. The information note 2012 will fill you in on the details.

4/5/6 Social On Friday the 2nd of December the Years 4/5 and 6 had their Social and our theme was mixed, so you could go as anything. When we got there we got our picture taken and then we went inside and had the catwalk. Gabrielle, Ellie and I went down the catwalk together and we pre-tended to be models. We had lots of games throughout the night and lots of prizes and lollies. The games we played were battle of the sexes, pass the parcel, limbo, blind dancing, and we did a bit of free dancing. Every-one got a prize and when we were playing battle of the sexes, the girls won by one point. Gabrielle, Ellie and I got the prize of Australia’s next top models. Ellie and I won the Macarena and Thomas, Taylah and Byron were the judges. All the Year Sixes had a game that they were in charge of. We all had a fantastic night and we all want to have another one next year.

By Allanah Moloney Crocheting Years 4/5/6 In week three of Term 4 year 4/5/6 did some crocheting with Mrs Catie Purtell. We all started off with chain stitch. Then we all learnt how do squares. Some people thought it was hard to do squares but they got the hang of it. Some people in the class did huge squares and other people had small squares. But everybody’s cro-cheting was good. Mrs Purtell finished them off for us. I enjoyed crocheting.

4/5/6 Sewing In week 8 Years 4/5/6 starting sewing. We made Christmas stockings for someone special in our family. We leant how to do blanket stitch, running stitch, back stitch and a chain stitch. We all got to choose two decorations to put on our stocking. The stocking is red with a white top with someone’s name on it. The best thing that I liked was blanket stitch because it’s easy and it’s the last thing. The hardest bit was chain stitch because I had to sew on the decorations. It was hard at the start because no one knew how to do it because the last thing that we did was crocheting. I think it was fun and amaz-ing. I hope it will encourage you to do something like that.

Hobart Excursion Twenty secondary students from Years 7-11 spent the last week in November on an excursion to Hobart. The students and staff took advantage of cheap fares adver-tised in April and then set about fundraising including sheep manure (still available at $5/ bag). The first day was involved with travel although a fasci-nating interlude was a visit to the MCG where we were shown around the ground by a MCG member with many years of association with the ground. The sports museum was very interesting and the visit concluded with a session of interactive sport. Here the students were able to try their skills at many sports. From the MCG we went to the airport (train/bus) and then experienced the “overseas” flight. The flight was great and the students showed their appreciation by spontaneous applause, much to the amusement of vet-eran air travelers. The first day in Tasmania began with a vigorous walk into Hobart and a visit to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. The rest of the day involved “chilling out” around the wharves and in the shopping malls.

It rained the day we went to Port Arthur but the students were on a “chocolate high” having visited the Cadbury factory. At Port Arthur each student was able to trace the life of a specific convict by researching the informa-tion in various rooms of the prison. That night the stu-dents enjoyed a game of Laser Tag in Hobart. On Thursday we travelled well south of Hobart and saw snow on the hill tops close to the road. The caves were fascinating especially glow worms. After a swim in the thermal pool the students experienced the tree top walk and the swing bridges in the old growth forest.

The winter crops (cabbage, onions, silver beet etc) have all been harvested. The gardens have now been planted with various summer vegetables and herbs. Ronnie Parry has done an excellent job in doing the heavy work in all the school gardens and the gardens are now a feature of the school, thanks also to Colin Little and Kylie Arnold. Fruit Fly . The apricot tree has had a severe attack of Queensland fruit fly. There is an obvious need for the whole Oaklands community to undertake an eradica-tion/control program to stop this pest becoming endemic in the area. This would include:

• Pick all infected fruit and dispose of fruit in sealed plastic bags (leave in the sun for a day or two. Do not bury fruit or put into garbage without sealing in bags.

• Pick up all fruit and dispose of as above • Put out baits and traps which are easy to

make and can be safe without the use of poi-sons (see attached notes). These can also be purchased from garden suppliers. Setting up traps can be a good holiday activity for chil-dren.

The incoming crop of tomatoes is in danger of becom-ing infested if this type of action is not undertaken. There are plenty of websites that can outline eradication programs. Books: We still have a couple of Stephanie Alexander books “Cooking with Kids” available. These books are full of recipes that primary students can easily use . Normally retailing at $45 they are available at OCS for $35 (2011 only). They would make an excellent gift. Evaluation Survey: As part of the National Kitchen Garden Program, our school is undergoing an evalua-tion which is being conducted by the University of Wol-longong. Some students from Years 5 and 6 are being asked to complete a survey as part of this evaluation

Secondary have had a very busy time. First, the whole secondary school went to Hobart for a week. Surviving many student’s first flight, the downpours of Port Ar-thur and excesses of the Cadbury Factory. See Mr Robey’s report for more detail. Last week students in Years 9 & 10 went to Albury for Work Experience. Students worked very hard, with Ber-nard working at Granata’s on Dean, Daysee-Mae at Myer, Breannan at the Woodland’s Child Car Centre while Bonnie worked at the Border Pets and Aquarium store. We are very thankful for the help of the employ-ers in providing this experience. I had an early start, dropping Bernard off for a 7am start each morning but still managed to cook a hot breakfast for everyone. We visited the Care Van in Albury and are keen to return to help out next year since we are in a fortunate situation compared to many in the region. Stu-dents enjoyed a night game of Ten Pin Bowling. Miss Buchanan did a great job keeping everything flowing nicely and we really appreciate her help in making the excursion possible (and very successful!).

This week’s Presentation Night went well and it was a pleasure to hand out so many awards to our very tal-ented students. The students really appreciate all the parents and community members who come along on this special evening. I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas and wonder-ful 2012. MAINTAINING YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE THIS SILLY SEA-SON!!! The warmer weather is well and truly here and Christmas is fast approaching. You can feel the party vibe in the air. You might be starting to fret over those extra kilos you are almost certain to gain with all the party in-vites you are looking forward to. At this time of year our healthy lifestyles can easily go out the window as we overindulge and travel away for the holidays. Christmas is a time for sharing and celebration but it can also be stressful especially if you find yourself constantly worrying about your diet, or worse, feeling ill, on top of being faced with all the necessary prepa-rations you have to make. With a little planning, though, you can stay in control of your health while still enjoying summer and all its festivities. Some pre-party preparation and a few tweaks to the diet can minimise the potentially unhealthy effects of sum-mer. 1. Always be conscious of your food choices.

Whether it is a Christmas lunch, dinner, or buffet at the office, it helps to use a smaller plate and sample all the available dishes in smaller portions. This way, you can enjoy everything without overindulging and head-ing home suffering from indigestion. Go heavy on the fruit, vegetables, and grain where available as these food substances give you better control of your weight. Go easy on desserts. Remember that eating right will leave you feeling good the next day.

2. Chew your food slowly. The more time you take to chew your food, the faster you feel full – and the lesser food you consume. Taking your time chewing also allows you to savour the flavours and enjoy each dish that has been prepared.

3. Drink responsibly. Wine and alcoholic beverages are almost al-ways offered at Christmas parties. But do you know that alcoholic drinks are also loaded with calories? Drink safely and avoid those extra calories – as well as bad hangovers and possible embarrassment. In between drinks, drink water.

4. Make time for exercise.

Since eating more than usual cannot be avoided entirely, burn off calories by taking morning or evening walks or jogs. With day-light saving available in most states, the sun is up bright and early for us to get active and outdoors, so take advantage of this amazing weather and start moving.

5. Prepare a healthy menu. Good eating habits, Christmas season or not, start at home. Plan a Christmas menu loaded with healthy options. Using alternative ingre-dients and the methods by which the food were prepared can actually do wonders, with-out sacrificing taste and rich flavours. Do your research. For example, serve seafood dishes instead of red meat or grill meat in-stead of roasting. Serve fruit and yogurt-based deserts and skip the lollies and choco-lates.

6. Rest and relax. Never take a long beauty rest for granted. Get as much sleep as you can so you would feel a lot more sociable and welcoming this Christ-mas. Plan your shopping in advance and take some time to yourself whenever you can. If time allows, by all means, treat yourself to a full-body massage!

7. Detoxify your system. Get in the habit of drinking a cup of tea in-stead of coffee to help calm your nerves dur-ing the silly season. Aside from their calming effects, teas and herbs are also effective reme-died to indigestion. Vegetables and fruit juices help relieve your body of toxins so consume as much as possible.

8. Super-hydrate. Amidst being busy shopping, preparing, and getting ready to attend parties and welcome guests, your body needs all the water it can get. Drinking water energizes you and can also reduce the feeling of hunger to help pre-vent overeating.

9. Have snacks and a healthy breakfast. Eating a small breakfast keeps you energized all throughout the say. Having a healthy snack at least an hour before another party is also a good strategy you can apply to avoid eating too much. Munch on fruits or pudding and forego candies, chocolates, and high-calorie desserts

10. You can exercise anywhere. Just because you do not have access to a gym whilst on holidays do not use this as an ex-cuse not to get some exercise in. You can run or walk anywhere and if you throw in a resis-tance band in your bag you can perform exer-cises such as a low row, chest press, bicep curl and tricep extension. If you are near a park, benches and kids playground equipment
