MERRIWA NEWS
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK…
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 2 at Merriwa. We hope you have enjoyed your break and we look forward to another busy and productive term. The term planner is on the back of this publication, so you can see events that are coming.
NAPLAN During week three our Year 3 and 5 students will complete the NAPLAN tests, and our Year 4 and 6 students will complete practice tests. It is an important time for our school, and it is important that every child comes to school during this week. Those children who
are sick and need to take a day off, will be given the tests upon their return, so please don’t worry that they will miss out.
NAPLAN Testing Program The Year 3 and 5 students will again be completing this year’s NAPLAN Tests online, except the Year 3 Writing Test. Timetable Tuesday 14 May: 9.10 - Writing Wednesday 15 May: 9.10 – Reading. Afternoon - catch up for students who missed the writing test. Thursday 16 May: 9.10 –Conventions of Language. Afternoon – catch up either writing or reading. Friday 17 May: 9.10 – Catch up day. Monday 20 May: 9.10 – Numeracy. Afternoon – catch up day. Tuesday 21 May to Thursday 23 May – catch up days.
Parents please note we need to follow a sequence of tests so if your child misses the first day’s test, writing, they will be completing the tests in the same order as the schedule and not sitting the same test as the other children in the class.
ANZAC CEREMONY We held a beautiful, dignified ceremony on the last day of Term 1, with our special guests in attendance together with some parents and families. We are very grateful to Mrs Prior and Mr Hoskins for their organisation and support. Parents I am sure you would have been immensely proud of the children as they participated with utmost respect. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend, I hope you also enjoyed the service.
Literacy Pro Stars: Lexile At Merriwa we have introduced the Literacy Pro Program to support your child’s independent reading skills
and to encourage a love of reading.
We have a running tally of how many words we are reading.
We were aiming for 500 000 words per term, but last term we reached over 750 000!
Look out for our new trophies….the class with the most words read and the most improved class.
Your child will also be rewarded for achieving certificate levels.
Welcome back
I trust all of our families were able to recharge over the break. It is always lovely to see
the children looking well rested and excited to return to class to see their peers.
Thank you to my dedicated staff for the work they did over the break in preparation for
the term. We enjoyed a productive day of professional learning on Monday and staff
are well prepared for a busy term.
Cooler weather
As the weather becomes cooler and the children are rugged up for the cold mornings
we would appreciate jumpers being labelled clearly with your child’s name to avoid lost
property ending up in a pile at the office.
Parent workshop
Information in regards to a communication workshop is included in this newsletter.
I hope to see many of our parents and carers at this event on May 14.
We look forward to a successful Term 2.

ANZAC Day The students in room 10 learnt about the life of the first ANZAC’s and were able to
look at some of the equipment they used in the First World War. Then we created
artwork to pay tribute to commemorate this special day.
ANZAC Day The school held its ANZAC Day service on Friday 12 April. We would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended the event. A special thank you to the Ansley family and especially Catherine, for again making and donating the beautiful wreaths that were laid during the service. The wreaths were taken to the Quinns Rock RSL after school Friday. The enclosed link is to the community newspaper who featured our two campus Principals, Mrs Waterhouse and Mrs Macri with senior students, Thida and Keely with the wreaths. https://www.communitynews.com.au/.../news/northern-suburbs-schools-commemorate...
