Can someone enlghten me abot
Secret Srrels?I'd heard rumours this Fall about a lit-
tle club comprised of some high- & mid-
dle-ranking City managers & most of thetown's mainstream media. I considered itpretty immature for grown professionals, and didn't give it much thought though sometimes it was hard to put anynumber of images out of my mind...
It came to a head for me on Monday, when one not-so-secret squirrel skitteredout into the clearing. To my mortification, the bylaw officer, in City uniform theonly person in the room identifiably fromthe City proffered Justin Trudeau a t-shirt with the Secret Squirrel logo on it.Not a t-shirt with the Citys logo on it; noreven an elected official doing the proffer-ing or even showing up to welcome thecelebrity visitor (but I digress).
Well, what is a polite young man to dobut be gracious when given such an in-appropriate thing? I'm guessing the trash
can at the next gas station & a sour after-taste from an otherwise pleasant meetingwith supporters.
So now it begs the question: what dothese Secret Squirrels do? A quick lookonline told me that Secret Squirrels are byno means simply a local phenomenon:Wikipedia has a In Popular Cultureentry. There are also definitions atwww.urbandictionary.com rangingfrom the abnormally secretive tothe not-reprintable-here (but it makes forcolourful reading if you look it up.)
So after all that, I'm not sure I want toknow what they do. But if senior CityHall staff are secret-squirreling with thefew and inexperienced mainstream re-porters & editors remaining in this town, chances are there will be some spin. Itsnot likely they'll be keeping citizens fully& honestly abreast of important issues. But it might work for awhile if yourgame is to keep a tight reign on publicperception, control the flow of informa-tion, and influence those who can facili-tate & expedite your agenda.
We'll see if letting the squirrel out ofthe bag on this has any repercussions
besides my growing dread of overarch-ing conspiracy. Kim Leclair
Open Letter Or cherbsare mssng!!!!!
Some person or persons have stolenour 2 large cherubs from our from gar-den on Armstrong St. It would take atruck or car to move them. They are of novalue to anyone but we cherish these twogarden oranaments. They stood in our
front flower beds for many years. Thewhite one stands about 2 high and the
black fountain also stands 2 high.We would greatly appreciate it if who
ever took them would bring them back. They are of no use to you and this not a funny prank or a way to get your JOL-LIES!!!!!!! If you can find it your heart to return them in one piece we are willing togive you a small reward just leave them in our yard, no questions asked. They areof no value to you and they are special to us. Any one knowing anything about thistheft, please let us know. Phone 378-6588.
Sales DemonstrationA little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, only to be con-fronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. "Good morning," said theyoung man. "If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstratethe very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners." "Go away!" said the old lady. "I haven'tgot any money!" and she proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young manwedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open. "Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Notuntil you have at least seen my demonstration." And with that, he emptied a bucket of horsemanure onto her hallway carpet. "If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of thishorse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder." "Well," she
said, "I hope you've got a good appetite because the electricity was cut off this morning."
Thank o, BranJust a quick note to say Thank you to
Brian Barrett and his staff at the arena. As someone who has an elderly par-
ent living at Nicola Meadows, I so appre-ciate the fact that the sidewalks aroundthe arena and especially the one on Gar-cia St. are always cleared off right to theconcrete. My mom walks on that side-walk almost everyday to get downtown. That and Cherry Inglis sidewalk are theonly sections from her residence todowntown that I can say are safe. Comeon people, even City Hall, check out therules about snow removal.
Way to go arena staff! Kelly Turchak

Merrtt Mornng Market: 2400 & contngToday is the 2400th(!) issue of theMerritt Morning Market, launched in summer 1996
as a companion to theMerritt Morning Mirror, then in circulation for just over a year, thebrainchild of Gordon Cockle. Though he called it a paper shopping mall, Gord wasperhaps presentient to the blog phenomemon, which would spread like wildfire in 1999.
TheMarkethas carved out a little niche in the community that has sustained my familyfor many years and for that I am thankful to the faithful MMM readers and advertisers. So after this little look back, its all forward from here. With no end in sight. KL
