Coordinated CareWe respect the importance of your time. When breathing is difficult, time is of the essence. The Lung Center offers patients the option of scheduling multiple services and tests in one day versus being spread out over several days or weeks. It’s an added convenience that leads to faster answers and treatment.

Patient NavigatorYour guide and resource throughout the day. Mercy’s Lung Center offers a patient navigator to help escort the patient throughout the day and assist as a clinical resource in answering any questions that may arise. Our patient navigator can be reached at (319) 389-5165.

Conditions we treat include: Asthma

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Sleep Apnea

Lung Cancer

Neuro-Muscular Disorders

Pneumonia

Types of services we offer include:Bronchoscopy procedures – a minimally invasive technique that utilizes a small camera device to help reach, diagnose and treat lesions in the airways or the lungs. This is an outpatient procedure done under conscious sedation or general anesthesia for patient comfort.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A minimally invasive, outpatient procedure for patients with severe persistent asthma that is not under control with regular medications. This technique reduces excess of smooth muscle in the airways, achieving better asthma control.

Pulmonary Stenting: Used in some benign diseases and to complement the treatment of cancer that affects the airways and lungs. The stents are mesh tubes made of metal and/or silicone that hold open the airway that otherwise will collapse.

Endobronchial Ultrasound Bronchoscopy (EBUS): Special bronchoscope with an ultrasound device on its tip to help the pulmonologist locate structures next to the airways (lymph nodes, tumors) or deep in the lungs, leading to a more precise and safe biopsy.

Electromagnetic Navigational Bronchoscopy (superDimension® ENB): Advanced technology that creates a 3-D road map of the lungs based on the patient’s CT, allowing the pulmonologist to locate and reach almost any size of lesion and difficult areas in the lungs.

Lung Cancer ScreeningA simple, safe screening and education for long-term, heavy smokers aged 55 or older.

Pulmonary Function Tests A painless way to measure how well your lungs are working. Results of the tests may explain shortness of breath, various types of lung problems, and whether breathing problems are a risk during general anesthesia.

Pulmonary Exercise Stress Test Helps differentiate between pulmonary and cardiac symptoms.

Smoking Cessation Led by a Mayo-Certified Smoking Cessation Specialist, this four-week course provides a comprehensive and individualized quit plan that includes educational sessions, support and experts that help guide patients to quit and stay quit.
