Catholic Education in Queensland - Future challenges

The following is a summary of remarks made to the state gathering of Catholic Secondary Principals by the Executive Director of The Catholic Education Commission, Dr Lee-Anne Perry. The occasion was the opening keynote address at the Catholic Secondary Principals Conference (CaSPAQ) in September this year held in Townsville. In the words of Pope Francis - “Look to the past with gratitude. live the present with passion, and embrace the future with hope.”

Issue No 1 - Legislation and Governance This includes the implications of Religious Freedom legislation at the federal level. In addition, at the state level, new rulings in relation to State Archives Guidelines. The necessity for schools to create and retain records relating to child safety incidents, and the possible use of those records in future trials and hearings. Other new laws that may impact in some way include, the “Modern Slavery Act - 2018” (sourcing school uniforms) and the ever present concern in this modern age of “Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme - 2018.” Anti-discrimination legislation and changing interpretations will continue to pose challenges in school service delivery.

Issue No 2 - Perceptions of Catholic Education A quantitative survey of 1600 adult parents was conducted in April 2019 throughout QLD, NSW and VIC. The concerns in regard to reputation could be best identified in the following quote; “The reputation of a 1000 years may depend on the conduct of a single moment” (Ernest Bramah). Survey results reveal the following findings - Most parents rate their child’s Catholic school good or excellent (89%). The criteria parents apply in reaching this decision are quality of teachers, pastoral and discipline programs, along with explicit values being evident. Essentially, top performing Catholic schools had excellent academic results, were well resourced and had excellent teachers. Understandably, poor ratings were based on similar criteria; poor quality staff, hidden bullying and pastoral issues along with the school appearing excessively religious. Choice remains important to parents but the affordability of Catholic schooling is an increasing concern.

Issue No 3 - Results Catholic schools, and in particular Catholic Order schools are perceived as having a strong academic tradition. The system is judged as caring and very pastoral in its outlook. While academic results are competitive and NAPLAN scores are highly credible, the gap for state Education is closing due to a huge emphasis the State gives to that data.

Issue No 4 - Government Funding Federal Government funding is increasing but deteriorating in the state contributions. Over the period 2020 to 2029 a predicted extra 3.4 billion dollars will be provided to the Catholic sector Australia wide. In addition, there will be $718 million dollars for unanticipated needs. The unsettling aspect of this more generous funding environment is the change in how individual schools will be funded. This will now be based on data from the Taxation department to arrive at ‘PIT’ (Personal Income Test or Score). Rather than a broad demographic profile of the school catchment, the funding will be based on individual parent incomes. This will probably result in a funding decrease in areas associated with mining. State Government contributions to Catholic funding have been modest in the past (approx 23 %) of our Government support). The future sees a further deterioration in the proportion of funding to Catholic schools to just over 20% with significant extra monies going to state Education. Obviously if this lacks any real justification then our State Government is putting pressure on fee structures into the future.

Issue No 5 - Enrolment and Growth Across the whole State, enrolment growth is low. There are pockets of high growth due to the opening of new schools. In some cases (like Mercy, Shalom and TCC) the school has no extra capacity to accept more enrolments. In regard to keeping students after they enrol, the Catholic sector is doing well but not as good as the Independent sector. It is interesting to note that the income profile of our parents would indicate that across the state the parents enrolling students at our schools are more affluent than in previous decades. Teacher Workforce and Challenges Approximately 60% of our Primary teachers are Catholic with a smaller percentage in the Secondary sector. The teaching workforce is increasingly female with an urgent need to attract more males. Student/Teacher ratios in Catholic school classes are however better than other sectors, showing a commitment to student welfare and quality learning. Challenges causing some disquiet with both parents and teachers are not however going away. Likely to persist are NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy), NCCD (National Consistent Collection of Data) for students with a disability, NSI (National Student Identifiers), New QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education). Lastly, the challenge to the Catholic sector is to encourage more staff to aspire to higher teaching classifications. Categories such as Lead Teacher and HAT (Highly Accomplished Teacher) have not been popular in our sector (possibly due to workload issues involved in applying for these positions).

Issue No 6 - The Future The 2020’s are the first ‘post - digital’ decade. We need to ask the question, does our ‘present model of schooling’ in regard to bricks and mortar locations remain a valid form of educational delivery? Are we on the cusp of digital schools and various forms of flexible delivery? Education is under the spotlight in regard to funding and expected outcomes, and in some cases found wanting. Digital disruption may be just over the horizon so all sectors need to be open to better ways to educate kids while still providing a sense of community and belonging. “May we live in interesting times”

ACTS Camp All Year 10 students are offered the opportunity to express interest in attending ACTS Camp, which is held annually. A couple of the 2019 participants share their reflection….. ACTS Camp was an amazing, unique opportunity. We met new people and made new friends who we will continue to talk to. We got to reflect on who we are and our values. The theme of ACTS Camp this year was “Indeed, You Are Very Good”, and over the three days we learnt about self-worth and connecting with others and God. It was a great experience and I highly recommend any Year 10 student to go on this camp. Emma McFarlane ACTS Camp was a great opportunity to come together with other young people from around the Rockhampton Diocese. It helped me to build confidence and to explore significant questions about faith and life. Lochlan Vella

Term 3 Reports Reports, detailing the current progress of students, are now available through Parent Lounge. The Term 3 report is provided mid-way through the semester as a guide to parents and students. Please

note that formal assessment for these subjects may not have occurred at that time. The report is an indicator of a student’s current level of academic performance and, depending upon work habits and application to the subject, students may exit at the end of the semester with a grade which is different to their current achievement Clarification of details or concerns are best discussed with your child’s class teacher.

Student/Parent/Teacher Conferencing. Parents are able to make interview times for Student/Parent/Teacher Conferencing with their student's teacher. The student is required to be present.

Wednesday 9 October (Week 1) - 3:30 -7:30pm

Access to make a booking will be available until Tuesday 8 October 10:00 am. Each interview will last for 6 minutes, with a minute allocated to change. Interviews are made through Parent Lounge by clicking on the parent/teacher booking button. Parents have been issued with a Parent Lounge username and password, however, if you have a problem with logging on, please contact the College Office. The following staff will not be available on the night: Miss Cooper, Mrs Ciantar-Schatkowski, Mr Bettington, Mr Skoczylas, Mrs Bennett.

Semester 1 and 2 2020 - Student Subject Preferences A change has been made for next year with students now selecting their subject preferences for both Semesters 1 and 2 in 2020. New year level subject handbooks for each level have been created. I would encourage parents and students to make subject choices by referring to the Subject & Handbook section of the College Website, which can be found here: http://www.mercymackay.qld.edu.au/academic_handbook.php

Students will be receiving their subject preference information via their Mercy College email account this week. Parents will also receive an email with further information.

To help our current Year 9 students plan for Year 10, a Subject planning sheet has been created which shows pathways onto Year 11/12 subjects and requirements. This sheet will also be available at the Subject & Handbook section on the College Website

Students will be required to record their preferences in their diary and parents are asked to sign it, to indicate they have seen and know what unit preferences have been selected by their student/s. Students will need to choose carefully and are asked to submit a reserve choice (Year 9 & 10 students only). The reserve choice also needs to be a unit that the student is willing to do. Opportunities for them to change subjects once the timetable is set are limited, therefore it is strongly advised to submit unit choices that they are certain about.

Some Important Changes for Year 10 2020 English: Students will be able to select an additional unit of English in Semester 2

Mathematics: To help students choosing Mathematical Methods in Years 11/12, students will be required to select an additional Mathematics Methods unit in Semester 2.

If you have any questions relating to a particular subject, I would advise speaking to the Head of Department for that subject.

All subject selections need to be made by the Monday 14 October, this is the second week of Term 4.

Mr Adam Skoczylas | Deputy Principal

Assistant Principal Mission

Mercy Day Mercy Day is an important day for all of us who belong to a College founded by the Sisters of Mercy. Mercy Day (actual date is 24 September) is the feast

of Our Lady of Mercy. It’s a special day to give thanks to God through Mary for the gift of mercy.

It is also a day to remember and give thanks for the life of Catherine McAuley. On that day in 1827 Catherine’s House of Mercy, in Baggot St, Dublin was opened. Catherine would have been delighted to have a place where her work with the poor could be done.

We celebrated Mercy Day this week and what a wonderful day it was. The day commenced with Mass and we were blessed to have Sisters of Mercy, special guests and the parents of our Mercy Encouragement Awardees join us as our community celebrated Mass along with the award ceremony that followed.

Ashwin, the student priest in our Southern Cluster shared his reflection on the readings.

His reflection involved a story with the main character, a good guy, being “God.” Of course God creates beauty, order, harmony, peace, teeming with life. He creates family, he creates creatures ‘humans’ which are meant to be unconditionally loving, believing and hoping, in a certain sense, for the best… Whatever may happen, God decides to give them freedom and at the outset to shower them with everything they could possibly need to choose life, love and joy.… but they turn away, and reject God. What a tragedy!

His creatures enjoy their freedom, taking what they need from God but rejecting God’s company; starting families of their own but refusing to be part of his; living for a short time, and like water cut off from the stream, their love and life starts to become stagnant… what began as love turns into selfishness, violence, disharmony… and the world which God created – beautiful, ordered, harmonious and peaceful - has become ugly, disordered, without harmony and full of chaos… It’s a good thing God has pledged humanity his help come whatever…

The humans actually see this mess as God’s fault! But even as they blame God, they cry out “Have mercy on us!” It’s a good thing our main character has already pledged, through thick or thin, rain or shine, to help humanity always and in every way.

Plot twist: another character emerges. Even though not the main character, she is incredibly important. This character is totally unique and responded to God’s invitation to family, to life, to love… she is able to say “Yes.” She is above the influence of the darkness, and uses her freedom to choose light, life and love. In our story, she has been given a special part, not just for her, but for everyone’s sake. Through this mysterious woman, we see God’s desire for “a loving family living peacefully in a perfect world” take shape.

Our story has now come to a head: God the Father choses this woman, named Mary, to be the mother of Jesus, God’s son. Mary says “Yes.” Jesus is born, grows up, teaches the world about God, and shows the world what God’s love looks like – that is to say, shows the world God’s mercy. In fact, God the Father has been called Mercy before, and Jesus has been called the Face of Mercy. It is little wonder then

that Mary is hailed as Our Lady of Mercy, with her many children bearing in their hearts the Light of Mercy, the light of God’s love and life, the light for which the world cries out.

The Annual Mercy in Action Encouragement Award, is awarded to a student from each of Years 7, 8, and 9.

The students receiving the award today have been identified as living out the Mercy values of Hope, Compassion and Justice for the poor and vulnerable. This annual award acknowledges the continuation of the work of Catherine McAuley who saw a need and did something about it.

In addition to recognising the efforts of the award recipients we encourage them and all students to strive to initiate social justice projects in our College and take them out into society.

Congratulations to the Awardees:

Dads and Lads Fishing Day What a magnificent day for a fish along the beach. Last Sunday we had 21 boys and their fathers/grandfathers along with 8 male staff

members attend our annual Dads and Lads Fishing Challenge. The day began with everyone gathering for Bacon and Egg burgers under the trees and a safety briefing. The purpose of the day was also explained to participants and was predominately about the importance of males spending more quality time with positive male role models in their lives. It was also explained to the boys the importance about being able to talk to someone. Everyone was keen to hit the beach and compete for the biggest fish and also who was going to catch the most. The boys certainly out fished the adults. The water was clear and a little too cold for large fish, but nobody wanted to leave without giving it their best effort. A huge thank you to all those who attended and understood the importance of the event. Hope to see you all again next year!

Justice@Mercy Mackay Natural Environmental Centre On Wednesday 18 September, Justice@Mercy visited the Mackay Natural Environmental Centre for the third time this year to help plant seedlings of native garden plants for Mackay Regional Council’s Free Native Plant Program and other projects across the region. Justice@Mercy students helped to plant a

range of plants to help with the Natural Environmental projects. We loved potting plants and shrubs. Over our past 3 visits we have helped to plant over 400 plants for revegetation projects all over the Mackay district.

Justice@Mercy card making. On Wednesday 11 September, Justice@Mercy made many Christmas cards to put into the wrapped shoeboxes which are filled with gifts for Seafarers. We had lots of fun listening to Christmas songs and showing our creative side making cards. The glitter was very popular. We will return to Stella Maris to wrap more gifts on Wednesday 30 October. We are still accepting donations of the following items: small address books, toiletries -non aerosol, fishing gear-hooks, sinkers, fishing line reels, playing cards, torches, batteries, souvenir biro/ pens, writing sets, socks and handkerchiefs. We would love to accept donations of the above items or even samples of products or promotional items from family owned business would be appreciated. Justice@Mercy are also looking for more donations of Christmas wrapping paper to cover these boxes.

Service Learning Year 8 Buddy Reading Year 8 students from designated homerooms are visiting St Mary’s Year 1 and Year 3 classrooms on Wednesday mornings from 8:15 to 8:30 am to help with reading and spelling. A weekly reminder is posted on both the Mercy App and Facebook each week. We are getting more volunteers each week. This week we had 14 students go and read with students at St Mary’s. It was pleasing to see a good number of both boys and girls from reading with their little buddies. Please note, during Term 4, the Buddy Reading visits will move to a Tuesday morning and will kick off with Midas students followed by Oraya and Pindar students. Next term we will be starting Yr 7 students helping out in our Mercy Farm Market Gardens.

HOMEROOM DOOR CHALLENGE 2019

Building on Habit 6 – Synergise: The habit of creative cooperation

The essence of synergy is to value differences - to respect them, to build on strengths, and to compensate for weaknesses. The way to achieve synergy is through the creative process and through that process people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results than they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly, things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. Over the past 4 weeks, students in each Homeroom have been busy using this creative process to design and decorate their door based on the theme ‘What Makes our House Great?’ Radio hosts from Triple M, Jay and Dave kindly donated their time to judge the doors and award the prizes to the winning Homerooms. THANKS JAY & DAVE!

The winning Homerooms were:

Mercy Soccer News In Term 3 Mercy College nominated one team to play in the Year 7 and 8 Mixed Mackay Soccer Competition.

The team had a slow start to the competition with a loss to Carlisle Christian College. From here though, the team found its stride, winning the next five games in a row. Unfortunately, in the semi-final Mercy College went down in a close tussle with Mirani SHS, 4-3. Congratulations to the players of the Mercy Team who had an outstanding season. They continued to display positive sportsmanship and dedication to their team in every game they played. The team were always respectful to their coaches/manager, referees and opposition players and were a credit to Mercy College.

The Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women is currently recruiting attendees for CONVO2019, where more than 100 Queenslanders aged 12-25 will come together to help the Queensland Government design a campaign to help put an end to cyberbullying. The event will be held on the student free day, Monday 21 October at the Queensland State Netball Centre.

Applications close on Friday 4 October. There will also be a parents forum that will run concurrently to this event that parents of young people selected to participate at CONVO2019 are invited to attend. Please note that young people travelling from regional locations must be accompanied by a parent/guardian chaperone and may qualify for travel and accommodation reimbursement (please refer to the travel principles on the Join CONVO page). Parents of young people from Brisbane and surrounds attending CONVO2019 are also welcome to accompany their child and attend the parent forum.
