Dear Partner In Hope,

2 0 1 6 WA S A M O M E N T O U S A N D H I S T O R I C Y E A R

for Mercy Housing Lakefront (MHL), thanks to our supporters.

Caring community members like you made it possible for us to double

the number of people we served in 2016. You made it possible for

people to “live in hope” by helping us to add 22 buildings in 18 additional

municipalities throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. In short, you

continued to help us make a meaningful and lasting impact in our region.

Thanks to you, we are also excited to announce that the original goal

of the 10-year “Moving Forward Together” campaign has now been

exceeded by our developing or preserving nearly 9,000 affordable

homes. As a result, you are helping us prevent displacement or

homelessness for over 16,000 people.

As I reflect on 2016, I am filled with gratitude for you and all who support

the mission of MHL. You saw families, seniors, veterans, and people with

disabilities in crisis and you responded. We know that our work would not

be possible without your generosity and hands-on efforts.

We are inspired by our many volunteers who spent hours preparing

and serving meals for MHL residents, hosting holiday gift drives for our

families, helping our youth grow vegetables in the Austin Youth Garden,

providing back-to-school supplies, and so much more.

We are energized by the generous support we received through our

annual events – from those who served on our Host Committees to those

who purchased tickets, invited friends, and raised a paddle. You helped us

more than double our event participation!

And we are grateful for the remarkable generosity of our individual donors,

corporate and foundation partners, staff, Southeast Wisconsin Council,

President’s Advisory Council, and Board of Directors who shared their

financial resources to ensure our sustainability and continued growth.

Together, we are a powerful force working side-by-side to create a more

humane world where poverty is alleviated, communities are healthy, and

all people can develop their full potential. As I look toward the future, I am

confident that the best is yet to come.

Yours in Hope,

Mark Angelini

“I like that we have a home and we can pay the rent. I like

that we’re not on the street.” That’s what seven-year-old

Jonathan told us when we asked him what he enjoys most

about living at Roseland Village.

Jonathan and his sister — Jacari, age 18; and cousins

Jhaydon, age 13; and Jaison, age 10 — are part of a growing

number of grandchildren being raised by their grandparents.

“She is everything to me,” Jaison said about his

grandmother, Doris. “My mom had to give me up for

adoption, so my grandma has raised me since I was only a

month old.”

Before moving into Roseland Village, Doris couldn’t afford

her rent and give her four grandchildren the space and

support they needed to grow. “After paying my rent, I

couldn’t afford anything for my grandchildren,”

Doris explained.

Today, Doris is able to afford her rent and provide her

grandchildren with a safe, quality home and the support they

need to be happy and healthy.

“I like that we have our own space. It is more secure

here, and we are happier here than we were at the other

apartment,” said Jhaydon.

While Doris is proud to see all her grandchildren doing

well, this year has been particularly meaningful: her eldest

grandchild, Jacari, was accepted into the freshman class at a

private university in Chicago.

M E R CY H O U S I N G L A K E F R O N T ( M H L ) is working to build a region where

everyone has an affordable home to use as a springboard to achieve better health,

economic security, and a brighter future for their kids. MHL owns 50 affordable rental

properties in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana, helping nearly 9,000 people to live in hope.

MHL is a regional office of Mercy Housing, Inc. (MHI), a leading national affordable

housing nonprofit that serves tens of thousands of people with low incomes every day.

Established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1981, and with operations in 41 states, MHI has 35

years’ experience developing, preserving, managing, and financing affordable housing.

MHI’s subsidiaries further the organization’s mission: Mercy Housing Management Group

(MHMG) offers professional property management and Mercy Loan Fund (MLF) finances

nonprofit organizations.
