Mercy Cancer Institute Cancer is a medical and emotional journey for both patients and their families. While each passage is unique, all patients experience common turns and stops from diagnosis through the end of treatment. e road can be tough to maneuver, so it helps to have a guide to light the way. Mercy creates hope, courage and strength for cancer patients by guiding them and their families through their journey in a compassionate, healing environment. In winter 2011, Mercy will make the process even easier when it opens the new Mercy Cancer Center in Sacramento—the first step of a broader plan to develop a regional oncology program, to be known as the Mercy Cancer Institute of Greater Sacramento. e 22,002 square-foot center will be co-located with an 11,664 square-foot comprehensive imaging center, bringing specialists, resources and services all under one roof to provide efficient, coordinated care in an outpatient setting. e institute’s goal is to: • Provide comprehensive oncology services emphasizing coordinated, seamless care to ensure a smooth journey from diagnosis through treatment • Address the emotional needs of patients and their families A key focus will be on healing the whole body—a commitment, inspired by the Sisters of Mercy, that sets Mercy apart from other service providers. Both the facility and its programs will address the complex emotional, physical and spiritual needs of cancer patients and their caregivers in a serene healing environment. Patients will receive a full continuum of care, including diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy and medical oncology and infusion services. Support, education and counseling services—throughout and after treatment—will enhance medical services. Nurse navigators will guide patients through the treatment process so they spend less time on paperwork and scheduling and more time on healing. WHERE THERE IS NEED, THERE IS MERCY More than 150 years ago, Sisters of Mercy Foundress Catherine McAuley used an inheritance to open a center in Dublin, Ireland, for women and children who needed education, health care and other support to survive. Today, the Sisters of Mercy continue Catherine’s legacy around the world through their affordable housing, health- care, education and care for the poor and elderly ministries. As the first community-based, nonprofit provider of radiation therapy services, the Mercy Cancer Center will reflect the Sisters’ tradition of compassion by providing broader access to cancer care for the region’s under- and uninsured populations.
