We’ve got to be able to handle extreme wind conditions. We also have to be prepared for no wind, and in that case, it’s a shootout. The last few years, we’ve had soft course conditions and no wind. You’ve had to make a tremendous amount of birdies. It can flip either way. The Hootie, and Bulls Bay Golf Club, is a great test for that. The golf course is very much the same way as Sea Island. If the wind blows, it definitely plays a lot more difficult, but if the wind turns off, you’ve got a chance to make birdies.” The University of South Carolina Men’s Golf team finishes regular season play and reaches one of the highlights of the collegiate season when they take part in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, held April 3-5 at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C. The Gamecocks helped organize the Hootie in 2005 and will play the event for the 12th straight season. This year’s field features four top-20 clubs, including the Gamecocks (16), Auburn (8), Wake Forest (10) and Duke (20) along with four more top-50 teams. South Carolina won the event last season with a three-day score of 838 (-26), 11 shots better than New Mexico. Then-junior Matt NeSmith captured medalist honors with a score of 205 (-11), including a victory in a three-hole playoff. Will Starke also finished in the top-25, posting a score of 215 (-1) to tie for 22nd. The Gamecocks also own runner-up finishes at the Hootie from 2006, 2008 and 2014.
