2006-07 NMU PREVIEWDean Ellis enters his 21st season at the helm of the Northern

Michigan University men’s basketball team. He is the all-time

winningest coach in NMU history with 322 victories. For the

2005-06 season the ‘Cats went 17-11overall and 13-5 in the Great

Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The

conference record was good for third place in the GLIAC North

Division.

The team returns five letterwinners and two starters from last

year. A big loss is that the Volcy brother’s tandem will be broken

up as Marco has graduated and moved on. He was second on

the team last year in scoring with an average of 11.1 ppg and led

the ‘Cats with 223 rebounds (8.0 rpg). M. Volcy was named to

the 2005-06 GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team. Also

gone from last year’s team are Randy Alexandre, Nick Buck,

Keder Hyppolite and David Noel. Noel was second on the team

last year with 37 steals.

The fortunes of this year's squad rest with Ricky Volcy. He

enters 2006-07 ninth on the all-time scoring list. If the other

players can compliment him and pick-up the pieces when they

have to, the ‘Cats should be one of the top teams in the GLIAC

North. Northern has the advantage to go with a three guard line-

up at times.

“We have shooters in every position,” Ellis said. “That’s is

one strength of this team.”

GUARDS

A big question entering the season is who will be at the point?

Chris Warner seems to have the inside track to land at the spot to

take over for David Noel. Seeing duty off the bench last year,

Warner had 33 assists and 17 steals. “He has all the skills and

has played the position in the past,” Ellis said. “In a lot of ways,

he will make us better.”

Ehren Wren, a redshirted freshman from Cottage Grove, Wis.,

and newcomer Jerard Ajami could see some time at the point.

Will Washington, who should see time at the other guard

position, led the team last year in three-pointers going 80-202 for

.396 percent. Washington led the conference in 2005-06 in three-

pointers made. “We are giving him the green light as a senior,”

Ellis said. Washington also had 40 asssists and 21 steals.

Others who could work into the rotation include: Carl

Branstrom (6-1) from Perkins, Mich., Tyler Kazmierkowski (6-5)

from Peshtigo, Wis., and Jake Suardini (6-1). Suardini is the only

one who has seen some playing time. Last year, he appeared in

28 games with 56 assists and 17 steals. Kazmierkowski will see

his first action, having sat out last year after transferring from

UW-Stout.

FORWARDS

Volcy anchors this position. He led the GLIAC in scoring (20.4

ppg) and blocked shots (2.54 bpg) last year. Volcy was also a

first-team All-GLIAC selection. He also was ranked fifth in the

conference in rebounds (7.9 rpg) and 10th in assists (3.36 apg).

He had a team-high 572 points, 94 assists, 71 blocks and 40 steals

last year. “He is the best player in our conference and one of the

top players in the nation,” Ellis said.

Steve Kaiser who saw time in 23 games last year returns. He

averaged 3.2 ppg and grabbed 1.6 rpg.

Newcomers John Lane (6-6) from Bringhurst, Ind., Darren

Jones (6-8) from Sterling Heights, Mich., and Sebastien Salois (6-

5) from Trois-Rivieres, Quebec will be looked to fill some time.

CENTER

Eric Sirrine returns for his sophomore campaign in the middle.

He is 6-9 from Kingsford, Mich. Sirrine redshirted last year, but

averaged 1.9 ppg and 2.1 rpg while appearing in eight games

during the 2004-05 season. Ellis feel Sirrine will be a factor.

Volcy will also see time in the middle.

SCHEDULE

For the ‘Cats to challenge for one of the tops spots in the

North Division they will be tested early for conference play.

NMU will play Michigan State in an exhibition game to begin the

season. The ‘Cats also face NCAA I foe UW-Green Bay. Other

non-conference foes include: MSU-Mankato, St. Cloud State, St.

Norbert, UM-Duluth, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout.

The ‘Cats were picked fourth in the GLIAC preseason poll

behind Grand Valley State, Ferris State and Michigan Tech.

For the ‘Cats to move up a spot or two, they must develop

quickly and find ways to involve more people in the offense.

There will be night's when Volcy is doubled-teamed and other

players must respond and pick up the slack.

The ‘Cats have the personnel to challenge for a GLIAC title.

For the squad to be successful they must play solid defense and

rebound. “We have depth in every spot and quality players. It

is just a matter of us executing every night,” Ellis said. “I like the

mix of our team.”

THE HOME OF THE WILDCATS

Berry

The Berry Events Cen-

ter is in its eighth season as

the home of the Northern

Michigan University men's

basketball team in 2006-07.

Opened in August, 1999, the

Berry is the newest of Northern Michigan’s athletic

facilities.

The facility is named after John W. Berry, Jr., a

1971 graduate of Northern Michigan University, who

donated $2 million to the project. Berry is a long-

time NMU supporter. He is the CEO of Berry Investment, Inc., of Dayton, Ohio, Accusport Corporation, Microwave Sensors, Berry

Braiding, Inc., and Mad River Sportman’s Club. He is also the retired president of The Berry Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bell South

Corporation, one of the world’s largest publishers of telephone directories.

The nearly $11 million facility provides individual seating for approximately 4,000 fans, in addition to 16 luxury boxes, which includes

a President’s Suite. Along the perimeter of the arena are four large concession areas as well as standing room for approximately 400 fans.
