When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 38-22 (.633).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Robert Morris Quick FactsWelcome Back - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson, who has struggled with vari-ous injuries throughout the 2011-12 campaign, gave the Colonials a spark off the benchin a 70-56 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/11/12). Johnson finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in 27 minutes of action. It marked the first double-figure scoring game at home on the 2011-12 campaign forJohnson, as each of his previous seven games of scoring at least 10 points had come onthe road. In addition, thanks to his eight boards against the Red Flash Johnson pushedhis career in rebounds to 501, becoming the 16th member of the RMU 500-rebound club.Johnson enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State with 506 career re-bounds, which ranks 14th all-time at Robert Morris.
Dishing The Dimes - A key reason the Colonials enter Saturday’s game against CCSU witha record of 8-2 (.800) in their last 10 games has been due to the job RMU’s two pointguards, redshirt junior Velton Jones and sophomore Anthony Myers, have done in cre-ating offense. In the last 10 contests, the duo have dished out 90 assists against just 44turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.05. Myers has been extremely efficient, post-ing 40 dimes against just 14 miscues (2.86 assist-to-turnover ratio). Jones enters Sat-urday’s game ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.68),while Myers ranks fifth (1.63).
The Comeback Kids - For the second straight game, Robert Morris fell behind by dou-ble-digits in the first half, only to battle back to pull out a victory. In a 78-74 win @ SaintFrancis (Pa.) (2/8/12) to open “Rivalry Week” in the Northeast Conference, the Colonialstrailed, 35-24, with 2:19 to play in the first half. However, RMU trimmed its deficit tofive at halftime, 35-30, and outscored the Red Flash, 26-10, in the first nine minutes ofthe second stanza to open up its own 11-point cushion, 56-45. The victory over SFUmarked the third time this season the Colonials have climbed out of a double-digit deficitfor a victory and eighth time RMU has turned the trick in two seasons under head coachAndrew Toole. In fact, in each of the last four road games for Robert Morris, the Colonialshave fallen behind by at least 10 points but come back to win three of them, including a15-point second-half deficit in an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).
Rockin The Chalk - A big key to the reason that redshirt junior guard Velton Jones leadsRobert Morris in scoring this season with an average of 16.4 points per game is his abilityto get to the free-throw line. In a 69-40 win over Bryant (2/16/12), Jones finished 9-for-11 at the charity stripe, the 10th time this season he has visited the chalk at least 10times. The nine free throws for Jones against the Bulldogs pushed his season total in thecategory to 160, establishing a new RMU single-season record. The old mark of 151 washeld by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95) during the 1994-95 campaign. Jones en-ters Saturday’s game with a free-throw percentage of 75.1 percent (160-for-213) and ison pace to finish with 177 free throws in 2011-12. Jones has also converted 350 shots atthe stripe in his career, which ranks second all-time and is just 37 shy of breaking therecord of 386 that is held by all-time leading scorer Myron Walker (1990-94).
Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last five sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 84-14 (.857) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 80-12 (.870) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 28-8 (.778) when outrebounding its opponent, including a markof 14-4 (.778) in 2011-12. RMU hosts Central Connecticut State Saturday leading the cir-cuit in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.5 caroms per contest.
30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket this season, and the re-sults are encouraging. In an 81-73 overtime victory @ Monmouth (1/21/12), the Colonialsvisited the charity stripe 34 times, converting 23 (67.6 percent). RMU has now won 35consecutive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The lastloss for the Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suf-fered an 85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk.Through 28 games of the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.9 free-throw attemptsper contest.
Robert Morris in the 2011-12 Northeast Conference Rankings
(NEC Games - as of February 16, 2012)
Did You Know?Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams became thefourth Colonial in the last eight years to lead the NortheastConference in three-point field goal percentage againstleague foes in 2010-11. Williams, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from long range against the NEC, joined former Colo-nials Aaron Thomas, Derek Coleman and Jimmy Langhurst.Thomas shot 49 percent (49-for-100) from deep in 2003-04against league foes, while Coleman converted 45.5 percent(51-of-112) of his shots in 2005-06. In 2008-09, Langhurstpaced the circuit at 48.1 percent (38-for-79).
Steal City - The defensive pressure Robert Morris has turned up this season shouldn’tcome as a surprise. The Colonials have forced opponents into 459 turnovers this year, recording 241 steals. In a 69-40 victory over Bryant (2/16/12), the Colonials registereda season-high 19 steals, including a career-high four thefts from both sophomore guardAnthony Myers and sophomore forward Mike McFadden. So far this season the Colonialsare averaging 8.61 steals per contest, which leads the NEC. Against league foes, RobertMorris has averaged 9.47 thefts per contest, which also leads the NEC. In two seasonsunder head coach Andrew Toole, Robert Morris owns a record 13-8 (.619) when finishingwith at least 10 steals in a game.
Lucky Charms - One Colonial who has blossomed since being inserted into the startinglineup is freshman forward Lucky Jones. Despite missing RMU’s 69-40 victory overBryant (2/16/12) with a knee injury, Jones is averaging 10.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.3steals per contest while shooting 52.4 percent (33-for-63) from the field in nine gamesas a member of the starting lineup. During that span, Jones has established career highsin both points (17) and rebounds (14), and he enters Saturday’s game against CentralConnecticut State averaging 10.4 points and 6.7 rebounds against Northeast Conferencefoes. Meanwhile, the Colonials own a record of 11-3 (.786) this season when Jones grabsat least six rebounds in a game.
In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 59-56 win @ Youngstown State (12/22/11), redshirt sophomore guard CoronWilliams buried a three-pointer with 0.3 seconds to play that helped give the Colonialsthe victory. Williams is now the third player on RMU’s active roster that has hit a game-winning shot in the last five seconds of a game in the last two years. A look at the recentColonials to sink a game-winning shot late for Robert Morris:

The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt junior enters Saturday’s game owning the longest active streak forgames played. Jones has played in 95 straight games for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 89 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial.Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson ranks second for Robert Morris in career startswith 46. Following Jones in consecutive games played is sophomore guard AnthonyMyers, who has appeared in 60 straight games.
Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last five seasons has been defense. Even with second-year head coachAndrew Toole on the sidelines, RMU’s attention to detail on defense hasn’t changed. Thanks to a 69-40 win over Bryant (2/16/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, Robert Mor-ris improved its record to 83-16 (.838) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaignwhen holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In two seasons under Toole, the Colo-nials are 32-10 (.762) when turning the trick.
Four Score and ... In a 70-56 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/11/12), Robert Morris hadfour players reach double figures in scoring as redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williamspaced the Colonials with 18 points. Joining Williams was redshirt junior guard VeltonJones (13), sophomore forward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt junior forward RussellJohnson (10). In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A break-down of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ...
