When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 36-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 43-24 (.642).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole has led the Colonialsto an overall record of 24-10 in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 in the NEC that helped Robert Morrisearn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournamentchampionship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff, Robert Morris owns an overallrecord of 116-55 (.678), with the 116 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 115 team or indi-vidual records over the last five years, with 35 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the second youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Robert Morris Quick FactsA Special Season - Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones became the seventh differentColonial in school history to eclipse the 500-point plateau earlier this season and entersSaturday’s game with 569 points this year, which ranks fourth in the RMU single-seasonrecord book . Jones, both a 2012 All-Northeast Conference First Team and 2012 All-NECTournament Team selection, needs just four points to move into third place, and his 569points are the most by a Colonial since former guard Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) scored585 in helping lead Robert Morris to the 2009 NEC Tournament championship. Evenwith his ability to score, Jones also owns a team-high 157 assists this season, which ranksas the fifth highest total in single-season history. Jones is the only Colonial in schoolhistory to own top five totals in both points and assists in the same season.
Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 36-year historyas a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to con-vert from beyond the arc. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams owns a team-high81 three-pointers so far this season, which ranks fifth in the RMU single-season recordbook. Williams, who is the third player in the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season, is the eighth different Colonial in the last 11 years to post one ofthe top 10 single-season marks in three-point field goals.
Dishing The Dimes - A key reason the Colonials continue to play in the 2012 CollegeIn-sider.com Postseason Tournament and own a record of 13-4 (.765) in their last 17 gameshas been due to the job RMU’s two point guards, redshirt junior Velton Jones and soph-omore Anthony Myers, have done in creating offense. In the last 17 contests, the duo hasdished out 147 assists against just 71 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.07.Myers has been extremely efficient, posting 59 dimes against just 20 miscues (2.95 as-sist-to-turnover ratio). Jones enters Saturday’s game @ Toledo ranked third in theNortheast Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71).

The win @Indiana State marked the fourth time this season the Colonials have climbed out of adouble-digit deficit for a victory and ninth time RMU has turned the trick in two seasonsunder head coach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the sec-ond half of an 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.
The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.
The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still nearthe top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals madeper game. Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.06 three-pointers per contest, which ranks second behind St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.09three-pointers a game. In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining59 three-pointers, while redshirt freshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48. As a club, the Colonials finished fourth in the NEC in 2010-11 with an average of 6.72 per game. A break-down of the NEC’s top five teams in three-pointers made since the 2001-02 campaign ...
