The Colonials, 2-1 so far during their road swing, are coming off a 70-67 victory @ Ohio (1/2/12) that closed out their non-conference schedule. Redshirt junior guard Velton Jones led RMU with 17 points and six assists in the win over the Bobcats, while red- shirt sophomore guard Coron Williams added 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Robert Morris concluded its non-conference slate with a record of 9-4 (.692), tying a Northeast Confer- ence record for out of league victories. The Colonials joined Saint Francis (Pa.) (9-5 in 1990-91), Monmouth (9-3 in 1991-92) and Wagner (9-2 in 2011-12). RMU’s nine non-conference wins this season also marks the second time in the last five years the Colonials have turned the trick, as Robert Morris finished 9-5 (.643) during the 2007-08 campaign. The starting lineup for the Colonials was extremely efficient, as forwards Russell Johnson, Mike Mc- Fadden and Lawrence Bridges and guards Velton Jones and Coron Williams combined to knock down a solid 58.8 percent (20-for-34) of their shots, including 50 percent (7-for-14) from beyond the arc. For Johnson, who finished with 10 points @ Ohio, all six of his double-figure scoring games this year have come away from the Charles L. Sewall Center. When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 35-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2011-12 campaign marks his second season as head coachof the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 29-18 (.617).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime to Long Island, 85-82. Despite a roster that features just one senior for the second straight year, Toole will lead a programin 2011-12 that is looking for its third NEC Tournament championship in four years, a feat that has beenaccomplished only once in league history. The Colonials won the 1989, 1990 and 1992 NEC Tournamentcrowns. “Our players are not old, but they should have an understanding of what it takes to win,” Toole said.“Let’s take the last 10 or 12 games of last year and now mesh the new guys in and keep going in the rightdirection.” Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of two, three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Robert Morris owns an overall record of 108-56 (.659),with the 108 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. Since Toole joined the staff in2007-08, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 91-45 (.669). While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last four years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 58-14 (.806) against league oppositionand enter the 2011-12 season having finished no lower than third over that span. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. At 31 years old, Toole is the youngest head coach at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Did You Know?Junior forward Lijah Thompson finished the 2010-11 cam-paign having converted 55.5 percent (106-for-191) of his at-tempts from the floor, a success rate that led the NortheastConference. Thompson became the fourth Colonial in schoolhistory to lead the circuit in field goal percentage and thefirst since former guard Tony Lee (2004-08) paced the NECby shooting 59.3 percent from the field during his senior sea-son in 2006-07. The two other Colonials to lead the NEC infield goal percentage are former forward Steve Napper(1995-98), who shot 66.2 percent in 1997-98, and former for-ward Chaz McCrommon (2000-05), who converted 52.3 per-cent of his shots during the 2003-04 campaign.

Scouting the Bulldogs - Bryant enters Thursday’s game against Robert Morris with an overallrecord of 1-12 (.077), including a mark of 0-2 in the Northeast Conference. The Bulldogs havedropped 11 straight games and are coming off a 72-55 setback to Lehigh (12/3/11). In that con-test redshirt sophomore forward Claybrin McMath led Bryant with 14 points off the bench,converting five of his 13 shots from the floor. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore forward AlexFrancis, who leads Bryant in both scoring (16.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg) while shooting49.7 percent (87-for-175) from the field. Francis is one of three players scoring in double figuresfor Bryant, as sophomore guard Corey Maynard averages 13.7 points per contest while juniorguard Frankie Dobbs contributes 12.2 points per game and leads Bulldogs in assists with 62,an average of 4.77 that ranks third in the NEC.
Bryant Head Coach - In his fourth season on the sidelines as head coach of the Bulldogs is TimO’Shea (Boston College ’84), who was named the seventh head coach in Bryant men’s basketballhistory June 23, 2008. O’Shea owns an overall record of 139-178 (.438) entering Thursday’sgame, including a mark of 19-83 (.186) with the Bulldogs.
RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris shot a season-high 53.2 percent (25-for-47) and held on inthe final minute of regulation to post a 70-67 victory over Ohio, Jan. 2, at the Convocation Cen-ter in Athens, Ohio. Redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams had given RMU a 70-62 advan-tage with 1:07 to play thanks to a pair of free throws, but Ohio used a full-court press to forcethe Colonials into multiple turnovers and close within three, 70-67, with just 49 seconds left.Reggie Keely converted a layup with 58 seconds remaining, and the following inbounds passwas stolen by TyQuane Goard, who was fouled by redshirt junior guard Velton Jones. Goard hitone of his two attempts from the stripe to pull Ohio within 70-65. Keely came up with a stealon the ensuing inbounds pass and fed Ricardo Johnson for a dunk to help the Bobcats make ita one-possession game, 70-67, and again Robert Morris turned it over on the inbounds pass,with Keely coming up with another steal. In the final 29 seconds, Ohio had four chances to tiethe game but came away unsuccessful each time. D.J. Cooper missed a pair of three-pointers,including a last second opportunity at the end of regulation, while Walter Offutt missed ajumper off an offensive rebound and T.J. Hall misfired a three-pointer. RMU held on by domi-nating the glass, posting a 43-29 edge in rebounding while winning for the 23rd straight timewhen shooting at least 50 percent from the field. Jones finished with 17 points to lead the Colo-nials and also added six assists and a pair of steals, while Williams added 14 points and a ca-reer-high eight rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson contributed 10 points, sixboards, two assists, two blocks and three steals. Keely scored 14 points off the bench to tie forteam-high honors with Ohio, as Ivo Baltic also finished with 14 points. Cooper added 13 points,seven assists and three steals for the Bobcats but struggled through a shooting night of just 3-for-17, including 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. Overall Ohio converted just three of its 26 at-tempts (11.5 percent) from long range. Robert Morris had five players record at least sixrebounds in the win, including eight from freshman forward Lucky Jones.

Robert Morris Quick FactsKeep It On the Down Low - Robert Morris opened the new year with a 70-67 victory @Ohio (1/2/12) in its final non-conference victory of the season, and the Colonials pickedup right where they left off in 2011. In improving to 7-2 (.778) since the beginning of De-cember, the Colonials have not allowed any of their last nine opponents to reach the 70-point plateau. RMU has yielded an average of 59.1 points per contest over that span, andthe streak of nine straight games of not allowing at least 70 points in a game is a newschool record. Board Games - A big key to the success that Robert Morris has had over the last four sea-sons has been due in large part to the program’s ability to crash the boards. Since thebeginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 77-12 (.865) whenthe Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including a 73-10 (.880) markwhen outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach, RMUhas posted a record of 21-6 (.778) when outrebounding its opponent, including a markof 7-2 (.778) in 2011-12. RMU returns to Northeast Conference action Thursday @ Bryantleading the circuit in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.9 caroms percontest. Over their last nine contests, the Colonials own a rebounding margin of +7.00,including four times over that stretch posting a rebounding margin of at least +14.
Freebies - Despite having his streak of 19 straight games scoring in double figuressnapped by finishing with seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), a key reason redshirt jun-ior guard Velton Jones was able to put together that streak is his ability to get to thefree-throw line. In a 70-67 win @ Ohio (1/2/12), Jones finished a perfect 6-for-6 at thestripe against the Bobcats and on the 2011-12 campaign is 79-for-106 at the chalk, a suc-cess rate of 74.5 percent that ranks 14th in the Northeast Conference. Jones, who is av-eraging 7.1 visits to the free-throw line and 5.3 free throws made per game so far thisseason, is on pace to establish a new Robert Morris single-season record for free throws.The record of 151 is held by former Colonial Gabe Jackson (1992-95), who established themark as a senior in 1994-95. Based on his current averages, Jones is on pace to finishwith 163 free throws in 2011-12, and he enters Thursday’s game @ Bryant ranked 13thall-time at RMU in career free throws made with 269.
Four Score and ... In a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11), Robert Morris had four play-ers reach double figures in scoring as redshirt junior guard Velton Jones paced the Colo-nials with 18 points. Joining Jones was freshman forward Lucky Jones (16), sophomoreforward Mike McFadden (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (10). In eightof RMU’s 14 games so far this season, four Colonials have scored in double figures, withRobert Morris owning a record of 6-2 (.750) in those contests. In the two seasons AndrewToole has been the head coach at Robert Morris, the Colonials are 12-5 (.706) when atleast four players score in double figures in a game.
The Daytona 500 - Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson has been RMU’s most con-sistent rebounder over the last three years, and he continues to produce on the glass in2011-12. Through the first 15 games of the year, Johnson has grabbed 83 boards, an av-erage of 5.5 per game that ranks second for the Colonials. The program’s active leadingrebounder with 471 career caroms, Johnson is looking to become the 16th player inschool history to join the 500-rebound club and the first since former Colonial JeremyChappell (2005-09) turned the trick during the 2008-09 campaign. Based on his currentrebounding average, Johnson is on pace to become the 21st player in school history toaccumulate 500 career rebounds Saturday, Jan. 21, @ Monmouth.
30-for-30 - Robert Morris has made a point to attack the basket in the early portion ofthe 2011-12 campaign, and the results are encouraging. In a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), the Colonials tied a season high by visiting the charity stripe 35times, converting 26 (74.3 percent). RMU has now won 34 consecutive games when vis-iting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss for the Robert Morriscame in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an 85-76 loss to UMBC(3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk. Through its first 15 gamesof the 2011-12 campaign, RMU is averaging 23.9 free-throw attempts per contest.

Luck of the Draw - Freshman forward Lucky Jones has been a consistent presence onthe glass for Robert Morris in the early portion of the 2011-12 campaign, as he entersThursday’s game @ Bryant leading RMU in rebounds with 86, an average of 5.7 per con-test. Jones has been a consistent contributor on both ends of the floor in recent weeks,as in his last eight games he is averaging 8.6 points and 5.6 rebounds contest. Jones hasreached double figures in scoring four times over that span, including a career-high 16points off the bench in a 64-54 win over Hampton (12/20/11). He is also proving to be anadept free-throw shooter, as he enters Thursday’s game with a conversion rate of 81.5percent (44-for-54) at the chalk, which ranks sixth in the Northeast Conference.
Return Of The Mack - Robert Morris received a boost to its lineup when sophomore for-ward Mike McFadden, a transfer from Iona, became eligible to play for the Colonialsafter sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules. McFadden made his RMU debut in a72-64 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/17/11), supplying 13 points and six rebounds. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt junior enters Thursday’s game @ Bryant owning the longest activestreak for both games played and games started. Poll Position - Robert Morris made a return to the Mid-Major Top 25 poll according toCollegeInsider.com two weeks ago, slotting at No. 24 after a 72-64 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (12/20/11). The Colonials jumped up four spots to No. 20 last week and despitea loss @ Memphis (12/29/11) over the holiday season, RMU entered this week’s actionranked No. 24 in the latest poll. RMU owns the highest ranking of any NEC institutionin league history in the poll, peaking at No. 12 in February of 2008.

The Charles L. Sewall Center
Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at theCharles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 andnamed for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989.
The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tourna-ment champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in thelast 26 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NECTournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No.2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed FairleighDickinson.
The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Se-wall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fanspacked into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St.Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green(2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift theColonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morriswomen’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament champi-onships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008.

The Need for ThreeOver the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris havebecome synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are still topsin the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game.Since the start of the 2001-02 season, the Colonials have averaged 7.08 three-pointers percontest, ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.), which has averaged 7.04 three-pointers a game. In 2010-11, guard Karon Abraham paced Robert Morris by draining 59 three-pointers, while redshirtfreshman guard Coron Williams finished with 48.
