THE LAST TIME THEY MET...February 18, 2012

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team won its fourth consecutive game Saturday with a 77-63 win over Concordia University. The Mountaineers (18-9, 11-7 Cascade Collegiate Conference) currently have the longest win streak in the conference. EOU also won its ninth straight game over Concordia, dating back to a 67-63 Cavaliers’ win on Jan. 19, 2008. CU has not won in La Grande since 2006, losing seven con-secutive times in Quinn Coliseum.

Seniors Jamar Johnson and Travares Peterson led EOU on Senior Night with 17 and 12 points. Trent Roos added 11 points, and Anthony Brown had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Cody Thurmond threw six assists. Eastern Oregon jumped out to an early lead over Con-cordia (14-15, 6-12), going up 18-5 while making four of their first five three-point attempts. Then, after the Cavs cut the lead back down to seven points, EOU closed the half on a 22-7 run to go up 44-22 at the break. The Mountaineers held Concordia to 28 percent from the field in the first half, and 0-for-7 from beyond the three-point line. EOU outshot the Cava-liers .382-to-.366 in the second period as the Mountaineers never let the lead slip back under 10 points.

Concordia did its best to comeback, though, going on a 12-4 run in the middle of the period to cut the lead to 14 at 62-48 with 9:04 left. However, EOU again pushed the lead back up to 20 points soon after before the Cavs ended the game on an 8-1 run. In the end, EOU outshot the Cavaliers .420-to-.329 and outrebounded the CU, 53-49.

The Cavaliers’ Kevan West led all scorers with 18 points, posting a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds, seven offensive. In addition, Jourdan Sweeney and Gage Aker also both scored 12 points in the game, while Aker contributed three steals.

The Mountaineers have qualified for the Cascade Conference tournament and will host Corban (18-12, 10-8) in the first round Wednesday at 7 p.m. EOU is seeded fourth in the conference tournament, while Corban is fifth. The teams split the regular season meetings, with the home team winning each time. Concordia travels as the seventh seed to Northwest University (25-3, 15-3) Wednesday.

THE LAST TIME OUT ...MEN SNEAK BY PLU LUTES...November 24, 2012Tacoma, Wash. - The Eastern Oregon University Men’s Basketball team (12-0) defeated the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (1-3) in tonight’s game. The Mountaineers defeated the Lutes 51-48 led by JD Esters and Anthony Brown.

Both teams came out slow in the first half. As the Lutes attempted to battle back, the Mountaineers continued to increase the gap leaving the half-time score 26-18. Eastern shot 45.5% (10-22) from the field, only connecting on 1-of-6 three pointers. The Lutes ended the first half shooting 30.8% (8-26), 0-of-9 from behind the arc.

Andrew Earnest from the Lutes came in prominent with an im-mediate 3-pointer 13 seconds into the second half. EOU would answer back scoring three times before another Lute’s basket. The Mountaineers would lead by as much as 10 points as Pacific Lutheran struggled to catch up.

With just 1:07 left in the game, Pacific Lutheran’s Andrew Earnest was fouled by Roos and successfully made both free throws bring-ing the score to 48-47, the first time the Lutes would take the lead. After Pacific Lutheran’s short lived lead, EOU’s Jason Mumm answered back immediately with a 3-pointer. The Lutes would eventually fall to the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers 51-48.

Esters would lead the Mountaineers shooting 4 for 5 with a total of 12 points followed by Brown’s 8 points. Cameron Schilling would lead the Lutes with 13 points shooting 5 for 15. Kyllian Wood led the team with 7 rebounds on the night.

The Mountaineers would end the game shooting 39.1% and 68.4% from the free throw line.

Eastern will be in action at home next Friday, Nov. 30th against Concordia University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm fol-lowing the EOU Women’s Basketball game. Live stats and video will be available at EOUsports.com

EOU MEN CONTINUE WIN STREAK...November 23, 2012In Friday night’s opening game of the PLU Thanksgiving Clas-sic being played in Pacific Lutheran’s Olson Auditorium, Eastern Oregon improved to 11-0 this season with a 75-68 victory over the Puget Sound Loggers. Trent Roos had a huge game for the Mountaineers’ with 28 points, including 4-for-7 from beyond the three-point line. Anthony Brown added 17 points, including a trio of three-point baskets, and he led all players with nine rebounds. Riggs Yarbro came off the bench to pace the Loggers with 14 points, followed by Rex Holmes with 11 and AJ Maw with 10. Rex Nelson led Puget Sound with eight rebounds and Holmes led all players with five assists.

The Mountaineers’ took a 30-26 halftime lead despite shooing just 28 percent (10-for-36) in a sloppily played first half. The Moun-taineers had a double-digit lead midway through the second half, but the Loggers responded with a brief run that cut their deficit to just five points. From there, EOU was able to maintain the lead and their unbeaten season. The Loggers finished the game shooting 42 percent (28-for-66) from the field compared to just 34 percent (25-for-74) for the Mountaineers, but they hurt themselves at the foul line by hitting just six of their 16 attempts. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, was 16-for-26 at the charity stripe. With all of the missed shots, EOU ended up with a 50-45 re-bounding advantage. The Mountaineers will take on Pacific Lutheran at 6 p.m.
