Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to win gold medals on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour with titles in 2010 at theRussian Grand slam in Moscow and the French Open in Marseille.
Wu and Xu posted 13th-, ninth- and ninth-place finishes in their first three events in 2010 before winning the gold medal atJune’s stop in Moscow by upsetting Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in the finals.
Before winning last month’s stop in Marseille, Wu and Xu entered the event after posting a 25th in their last SWATCH FIVBWorld Tour event in Gstaad, Switzerland. It was their lowest finish since placing 25th at the 2006 Gstaad event.
Wu and Xu played in only one event in 2009 due to the Chinese National Games as the pair placed second in the seasonfinale in Sanya, China, where they dropped the finale to Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of The Netherlands.
Wu and Xu last event together prior to the Sanya Open was at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games where they place ninth afterbeing eliminated 21-15 and 21-18 in 41 minutes by David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany.
Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to medal on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since the start of the internationalcircuit in 1987.
Wu and Xu are the only Chinese men’s team to play in a SWATCH gold medal match with five appearances together in 2008in Australia, China, Croatia, Russia and France, one in 2009 at Sanya and two in 2010 at Moscow and Marseille.
Wu and Xu claimed China’s first-ever men’s medal by capturing the bronze at the 2006 Poland stop with a third-place win overMarcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil.
Wu and Xu rank 16th on the all-time FIVB earnings list with US$576,100. For his FIVB careers, Wu is competing in his 69th SWATCH stop with $301,475 in earnings to rank 43rd.
