HEAD COACH BRETT PETERSEN... Brett Petersen is entering his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men’s hockey team. Petersen has compiled a 148-126-20 record in his 11 seasons at Gustavus. His 148 wins at Gustavus ranks second behind legendary coach Don Roberts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since 1993. Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State.
TOP RETURNERS... Inexperience will be no excuse for the Gustavus men’s hockey team this year, as the Gusties return 18 letterwinners from last season’s squad to the ice.Returning letterwinners include senior Ross Ring-Jarvi, juniors Henrik Reisvang, Dan Erickson, Alec Ackmann, Andrew Peterson, Sam Blaisdell, Tim LaBombard, Brian White, Ryan Johnson, Jason Aguiar, and Tyler Venne, and sophomores Ilya Kravtchouk, Joey Olson, Zach May, Adam Smyth, Gustav Bengtson, Mark Jackson, and Patrick Hurley.
SUIT UP FROSH... Gustavus enters the season with nine fresh faces wearing black and gold. This year’s incoming class is the oldest class Coach Petersen has brought to campus in his tenure behind the Gustie bench. All frosh on the roster have a minimum of a year of junior hockey experience under their belts. This season’s newcomers include forwards Jack Walsh, Schyler Adams, Nate Weingarden, Andy Pearson, Cory Ellis, and Blake Schammel, defensemen Sam Smith, Nate Paulsen, and goaltender John McLean.
AROUND THE GLOBE... The 2011-12 Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team features 21 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen’s squad features players from six states; Minnesota (18), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden.

USCHO.COM Division III Men’s Poll(October 11, 2011)
RINGO LEADS THE WAY... Gustavus senior forward Ross Ring-Jarvi is all that remains from the 2008-09 Gustavus team that made a run to the NCAA Championship game. The last member of the old guard earned All-Conference honors for the third-straight time at the conclusion of last season, finishing 11th in the MIAC in scoring with 26 points (9G, 17A). Ringo, who will wear the “C” on his chest for the second straight season, has played in 86 straight games in his three years at Gustavus. The Anoka, Minn. native is currently in the hunt for his 100th career point, sitting at 97 points on 35 goals and 62 assists. Ring-Jarvi would be the 34th player in Gustavus men’s hockey history to reach the 100-point milestone.
RETURNING FIRE POWER... Despite the loss of four-year staples Brad Weick at forward, Mitch Carlson and Matt Schugel on defense, and Josh Swartout at goaltender due to graduation, the Gusties return plenty of scoring-power to the ice this season. Gustavus brings back 75-percent of its goal scoring production and 73-percent of its total-point production from last season.
THEY’RE NOT ROOKIES ANYMORE... Offensive production from its rookies was key last season, as four different Gustavus first-year players finished last season ranked in the top-10 in freshman scoring. Zach May (3rd, 17 pts.), Gustav Bengtson (5th, 16 pts.), and Adam Smyth (6th, 15 pts.) will look to avoid the sophomore slump get on the scoresheet early and often this season. Gustav Bengtson was the first Gustie to make the All-Rookie team since Ring-Jarvi did it in 2009, as he led the team in shots with 106 and finished at +11.
JOHNSON’S ROLE ELEVATED... Gustavus junior Ryan Johnson came on strong at the conclusion of last season, scoring eight points in the last eight games to finish second on the team in scoring with 21 points (10G, 11A). The junior’s role will be elevated this year due to his success on the dots last season. Johnson led the team in faceoff percentage at .584, going 269-192.
NETMINDER ???... Due to the shear lack of minutes played, goaltending is Gustavus’ key question mark entering the season. The Gusties will look to fill the void left by of primary goalie Josh Swartout, who logged over 4,500 minutes and finished with a record of 45-25-5 over his four years. Junior Tyler Venne is the most experienced goaltender returning. Venne went 4-1-1 with a goals against average of 2.62 and a save percentage of .895 last season. Junior Jason Aguiar and freshman John McLean will also get a shot while adding depth at the position.
