Foreword
A Menaion is a liturgical book which contains the changeable parts of Byzantine divineservices for a given month. The volume in your hands is the tenth of a series of twelvebooks for use in Byzantine Catholic parishes. Each day is provided with the followingmaterial:
(1) Synaxarion (brief life of the saints remembered) (2) Troparia and Kontakia (3) Prokeimena and Alleluiaria (4) Communion Hymn.
On major feasts, the proper antiphons (when there are any) and the Magnification andIrmos (appointed to take the place of It is truly proper) are also included.
Texts which are contained in the Faithful’s Book published by the Byzantine CatholicChurch are reproduced with their musical settings from that book. Those texts weretranslated by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgical Commission, and then set to plainchant by theInter-Eparchial Music Commission.
Many of the Troparia contained in this volume of the Menaion are, in fact, common texts(i.e., they are used on more than one feast). These texts, too, come from the work of theIELC/IEMC, as are all the Prokeimena and Alleluiaria and Communion Hymns.
The texts of the Troparia and Kontakia that are not from the above-mentioned source arealmost always taken from the Order of Matins published by the Sisters of the Order ofSaint Basil the Great, and we acknowledge these texts with gratitude.
This volume is intended to be used annually. Because of this, cantors must use theTypikon of the Metropolitan Church to discern how materials from the Menaion are to be
combined with the Sunday Ochtoechos. The Typikon will also explain how Prokeimenaand Alleluiaria are to be combined.
May this series of volumes be a blessing for all who attend daily celebrations of theDivine Liturgy, as well as for those who, unable to be at church each day, still wish topray with the Church and honor the Lord and his saints.

Communion Hymn (Psalm 32:1 )
17 The holy great martyr Marina (also known as Margaret), at Antioch in Pisidia. Itis said that she dedicated her body to Christ by her virginity and her martyrdom. Our venerable father and confessor, Paul Gojdich, bishop of Preshov. Born in 1888
in Ruske Perklany in Prjashevschina to a priestly family. Though his family wanted himto go into medicine or law, he felt called to the priesthood and entered the Preshovseminary in 1907. He chose the celibate priesthood and was ordained in 1911. In 1922,he entered the Basilian monastery of St. Nicholas at Chernecha Hora. He was renownedfor his long hours of prayer and for his work with the youth of the Church. In 1926, hewas appointed as Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Preshov, and was ordainedbishop in 1927. Through independence, war, and near famine conditions, he was a goodshepherd to his people. In 1949, the Communist government of Czechoslovakia beganits liquidation of the Byzantine Catholic Church, and Bishop Gojdich worked throughevery means at his disposal to keep his priests and people loyal to their ByzantineCatholic Church and to Rome. He was arrested in 1950, tried in a mock trial in 1951.
The secret police made every effort to break Bp. Gojdich and have him recant the Unionof Uzhorod, but he remained faithful. However, his health was completely broken by themaltreatment he received, and he died in the penitentiary of Leopoldov, Slovakia.(1960)
