    Foreword

A Menaion is a liturgical book which contains the changeable parts of Byzantine divineservices for a given month. The volume in your hands is the twelfth of a series of twelvebooks for use in Byzantine Catholic parishes. Each day is provided with the followingmaterial: (1) Synaxarion (brief life of the saints remembered) (2) Troparia and Kontakia (3) Prokeimena and Alleluiaria (4) Communion Hymn.

On major feasts, the proper antiphons (when there are any) and the Magnification andIrmos (appointed to take the place of It is truly proper) are also included.

Texts which are contained in the Faithful’s Book published by the Byzantine CatholicChurch are reproduced with their musical settings from that book. Those texts weretranslated by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgical Commission, and then set to plainchant by theInter-Eparchial Music Commission.

Many of the Troparia contained in this volume of the Menaion are, in fact, common texts(i.e., they are used on more than one feast). These texts, too, come from the work of theIELC/IEMC, as are all the Prokeimena and Alleluiaria and Communion Hymns.

The texts of the Troparia and Kontakia that are not from the above-mentioned source arealmost always taken from the Order of Matins published by the Sisters of the Order ofSaint Basil the Great, and we acknowledge these texts with gratitude.

This volume is intended to be used annually. Because of this, cantors must use theTypikon of the Metropolitan Church to discern how materials from the Menaion are to becombined with the Sunday Ochtoechos. The Typikon will also explain how Prokeimena

and Alleluiaria are to be combined.

May this series of volumes be a blessing for all who attend daily celebrations of theDivine Liturgy, as well as for those who, unable to be at church each day, still wish topray with the Church and honor the Lord and his saints.

    MENAION - AUGUST

1 The procession of the Wood of the venerable and life-creating Cross. This feast

was established in the reign of the Greek Emperor Manuel, as a memorial of Greekvictory over the Saracens. The procession with the relic of the Precious Cross was madefrom the imperial palace to the church of Hagia Sophia; there the relic remained forfourteen days, and was then carried back in procession to the church in the palacegrounds. The holy seven Maccabees, their mother Solomonia, and the elder Eleazar atAntioch in Syria, under Antiochus Epiphanes the king. For the sake of keeping the lawof the Lord with unconquered faith, they were cruelly handed over to death with theirmother. She suffered with her sons as they were martyred, one by one, and was crownedwith them, as it is written in the second book of the Maccabees [2 Mac. 7]. Likewise iscommemorated St. Eleazar, one of the first scribes, a man of advanced age. In that samepersecution, refusing to eat forbidden meat on account of his love for the Torah of theLord, he achieved a most glorious death rather than a shameful life; he voluntarily wentto his punishment, leaving an excellent example of virtue.

In AD 415,Gamaliel appeared in a dream to the priest Lucian in that town, and revealed the burialplace of the Protomartyr. 4 The holy seven children of Ephesus. During the persecution of the emperorDecius, seven young soldiers refused to sacrifice to idols. Tradition says that their nameswere: Maximilian, Iamblichus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodianus, andAntoninus. They concealed themselves in a cave outside of Ephesus, and the emperorhad them sealed into the cave to kill them. In the reign of the Christian emperorTheodosius the Younger (408-450), there arose a dispute about the veracity of theChristian teaching on the resurrection of the dead. The youths awoke, testified to the trueteaching, and one week later died. (250 and 454)The venerable martyr Eudoxia. A native of Heliopolis in Phoenicia, Saint Eudoxialived in the times of Emperor Trajan (98-117). At first she led a licentious life, enticed alarge number of men to evil by her rare beauty, and amassed riches of great value.Having heard a certain Germanus, a monk, speak on religion and repentance, she wasconverted to Christ and baptized by Bishop Theodotos, After having distributed her

goods to the poor, the Saint retired to a monastery and there practiced all the asceticalexercises. She was brought before Emperor Adrian (117- 138), accused by the very oneswhom she had formerly corrupted. Working miracles and curing the Emperor's son, sheconverted the latter to the Christian faith. She was martyred by being beheaded. (2ndcentury)

Kontakion of Lawrence - Tone 2

y gThe holy martyr and archdeacon Lawrence of Rome, who desired the fellowship ofPope Sixtus even in martyrdom. As St. Leo the Great relates, when ordered to hand overthe treasures of the Church, he instead showed to the foolish tyrant the poor. As

archdeacon, it was his ministry to care for them, and on a great number of whom he hadlavished the necessities of life and clothing. The third day after his arrest, he conqueredthe flames for the sake of the faith of Christ. In honor of his triumph even theinstruments of his execution were transformed. His body is buried in Rome in the CampoVerano in the cemetery called by his name. (258)

12 Postfestive day of the TransgurationThe holy martyrs Photius and Anicetus, who bore witness to the Christian Faithbefore the emperor Diocletian. Both of them were tortured, and then imprisoned forthree years. Eventually they were thrown into an enormous burning furnace in the year305.(13) Our venerable father Maximus the Confessor, in the fortress of Skhemaris on theriver Hippus in the summit of the Caucasus. He was the hegumen of Chrysopolis nearConstantinople, notable for his teaching and his zeal for the Catholic truth. When hevigorously fought against the Monothelites, he had his right hand cut off by the heretical

Emperor Constans. Along with two of his disciples, both named Anastasius, after aharsh imprisonment and many tortures, he was exiled to the region of Lazica andrendered his spirit to God. (662) (This feast is transferred to this date because of the

    Communion Hymn (Psalm 115:4):

16 Postfestive day of the DormitionTranslation of the Icon of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, the icon “not

made by human hands,” from Edessa to Constantinople, 944. Tradition relates thatAbgar, prince in the city of Edessa, suffered from leprosy. Having heard of Jesus thehealer in Palestine, he sent a portrait painter named Ananias with a letter to Jesus, askinghim to come and cure his leprosy. Being unable to come, the Lord took a napkin andwiped his face, leaving a perfect reproduction of the Holy Face on it. Ananias took thenapkin back to Abgar, along with the message that he would be partially cured of hisdisease, and later completely. The Apostle Thaddeus of the Seventy, preaching the

Gospel, came to Abgar and healed him.The holy martyr Diomedes was a physician from Tarsus who taught people theChristian faith as he ministered to their suffering bodies. The emperor Diocletian orderedhim to be beheaded in Nicea. (298)
