QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. Tulsa
This is the 10th meeting between Memphis and Tulsa. The Tigers lead the overall series 6-3, includ-ing a four-game winning streak against the Golden Hurricane heading in to Thursday night’s match-up. Memphis is 2-1 in games played in Tulsa. Three of the last four meetings with Tulsa have been decided by a combined 12 points, including a 66-64 Tiger win on their home floor last season.
In the Win Over UTEP - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir made her first six free throw attempts in the win over UTEP, pushing her consecutive made free throw streak to 31. She then missed her seventh attempt before hitting her eighth to start her next streak. The 31 made free-throws broke her own school record of 26 straight that she set last season and shared with former Tiger Devin Necaise. She leads Conference USA with her 89.5 percent clip from the line. She is not ranked in the C-USA overall stats because she missed seven games this season with a broken right (shooting) hand, suffered at the end of Memphis’ win at Texas-Arlington. - Nicole Dickson posted 22 points in the win at Southern Miss and 27 in the win over UTEP. That marked the fourth time this season she has posted back-to-back 20-plus point games. She scored 20 points in the first half of the win over UTEP. - Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir scored a career-best 19 points in the win over UTEP. She was an efficient 5-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-2 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. She also added a team-best five assists against just two turnovers and led all players with three steals. - After going two straight games without a three-point field goal made, the Tigers hit six in the win at Southern Miss and connected on a season-high 10 triples in the win over UTEP. - Memphis was out-rebounded by its opponent for the fifth time in the last six games, finishing with 36 rebounds to UTEP’s 39. Memphis has out-rebounded just three opponents in Conference USA play (UAB, Rice and Southern Miss). - Memphis moved into a tie for fourth in the C-USA standings with UTEP and UAB. Memphis swept the regular season meetings with UAB, 2-0, and now has the head-to-head advantage against UTEP. The Tigers’ next game is another landmine though, Tulsa is just one game behind the Tigers, and a Golden Hurricane win would give them the tiebreaker over Memphis. - Memphis has been getting big games from its post players off the bench as of late. Pa’Sonna Hope had 11 points and seven rebounds in the win at Southern Miss, and followed that up with a career-best 13 rebounds in the win over UTEP. - Memphis got a pair of Tigers back in the win over UTEP. Jaymie Jackson briefly returned after miss-ing two games with a leg injury suffered late in the loss to SMU on Feb. 17th. Ann Jones also returned for a short stint after missing the trip to Southern Miss due to a family emergency. Jones battled foul trouble though, picking up four fouls in four minutes of play.
- With her 22 point game, Nicole Dickson went over the 500-point mark for the season. She be-comes the first Tiger to score 500 or more points in a single season since Jasmine Lee finished with 501 points last season. Since Melissa McFerrin has taken over at Memphis, just three Tigers have scored 500 or points in a single season: Brittany Carter scored 654 from 2009-10; Dickson’s 504 points this year, and Lee’s 501 points last season.
Dickson and Hearn Sweep C-USA Honors for a Third Time Nicole Dickson and Ariel Hearn swept the Conference USA weekly honors for a third time this season. Dickson earned her fourth C-USA Player of the Week award for averaging a double-double of 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from three-point range. She had a season-best 16 rebounds in the overtime win at Southern Miss, and scored 20 first half points in the win over UTEP. Hearn earned her third C-USA Freshman of the Week honor after averaging 16.0 points, 7.5 re-bounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She also shot 50 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent from three-point range. This is the third time this season that the duo has won both awards in the same week. They also won both awards on Dec. 31st and Jan. 7th. Dickson additionally won the player of the week award on November 19th. Dickson becomes the first player in school history to earn a C-USA Player of the Week Award for a fourth time. Tamika Whitmore won the award three times in 1997-98 and 1998-99, but never won it four times. Hearn becomes the first Tiger freshman to earn the freshman of the week honor three times. Ann Jones won it twice last season and Nicole Dickson won it once in her freshman campaign.
Hearn Looking for 100 Freshman guard Ariel Hearn started her college career with 12 assists in the first game of the sea-son and hasn’t looked back. She heads into the game at Tulsa with 97 assists, trying to become just the second Memphis freshman to ever have 100 assists in a single season. The last time a Tiger fresh-man dished out a 100 assists? 1983-84 when Ruth Ann Forsythe had 101 assists.
McGraw Just Misses Career Mark Sophomore guard Lauren McGraw finished the UTEP game with nine points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line. The extra points out there cost her a chance to set a career high in scoring, missing her mark of 11 points set in the win at Saint Louis. Mc-Graw was one of four Tigers to hit a three-point field goal on Sunday, knocking down her first make since the loss at UCF back on Feb. 10th. Her first half three was one of a season-best 10 triples on the year for Memphis. The sophomore was unselfish with the ball though, finishing with a season-best four assists against just one turnover. In the last five games, she has nine assists against six turnovers and is 9-for-16 from the free-throw line (56.3 percent).
Abdul-Qaadir Passes Two Benchmarks Junior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir passed a pair of benchmarks in the win over UTEP. Her career-best 19 points pushed her over 600 for her collegiate career at Memphis and her five assists gave her 200 career helpers.
Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... rECorD BrEaKDoWn She also set a season and career-best, scoring double-digit points for a fourth straight game. That marks the first time in 85 career games that the Springfield, Mass., native has scored double-digit points in four straight games.
Hope Pushes Double-Double Mark in 2-0 Week Junior center Pa’Sonna Hope came off the bench and gave Memphis some big minutes in the post in the two wins last week. She averaged 9.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game last week and was 8-for-13 from the field (61.5 percent). She battled foul trouble against UTEP, finishing with four fouls, but played over 20 minutes for a second straight game. Her only rough spot on the week was at the free-throw line, where she was 3-for-7 (42.9 percent). Her eight defensive rebounds against UTEP were a Tiger career-best and her five offensive boards tied her career-best mark.
Dickson Ties Ellis’ Block Mark Senior Nicole Dickson had four blocks last week, two in each win. That gave the senior 26 blocks for the season, tying Savannah Ellis for fourth in the Tigers’ senior single season record book. For her Memphis career, Dickson has 59 career blocks, which ranks the player more known for her scoring in the league, for sixth all-time in the Memphis record book.

That’s Foul The Tigers are 6-9 when they give their opponents 20 or more attempts from the free-throw line, including a mark of 2-5 in league play.
Dickson Moves to 10th in Career Scoring Nicole Dickson has moved into the career top 10 at Memphis in scoring with 1,595 career points. That puts her squarely at 10th all-time, but she would have some work to do to move up any higher though. Kitty Allen is in ninth place with 1,823 points, 228 points away from where Dickson now sits.
Hearn Passes Another Fellow Memphian’s Mark Freshman guard Ariel Hearn finished with 22 points, all but two of those in the second half and overtime periods, in the win at Southern Miss. That was her first 20-plus point outing in C-USA play, but was her third 20-plus point game of the season. She finished just one point shy of tying her career high of 23 points, set in the win over Tennessee Tech, and tied her 22 point mark set in the road win at Seton Hall. With the 22 points, Hearn now has 354 points for her career, ranking sixth all-time among Tiger freshmen. She passed former Tiger Paris Leonard’s mark (2005-06) of 354 points. Leonard, like Hearn, was a Memphis prep product. Leonard graduated from Wooddale HS, while Hearn graduated from Arlington HS. Hearn now ranks tied for fourth among Tiger freshmen in minutes played (832), third in free-throws made (90), third in free-throw attempts (128), fourth in assists (95) and sixth in points (354).
Dickson Just Misses Third Consecutive Double-Double The Tiger coaching staff asked the team to focus on rebounding in the game against Southern Miss, and senior co-captain Nicole Dickson led the way, posting a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds. That was Dickson’s sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season an her sixth double-double this year. She now has 16 career double-doubles, ninth in school history, and needs one more to move to a tie for sixth in double-doubles, where Ashley Thornton, Diane Gary and Linda Street currently sit with 17 double-doubles.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS
Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.
McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.
Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-
sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
