  • Why do we play sports?

Why do we exhaust ourselves endlessly chasing

one another within fence enclosed grassy meadows or

frustrate ourselves by attempting to thwart the laws

of physics that dictate an object at rest will remain at rest

or punish ourselves with the unnatural pursuit of

conquering environments we have no business

    wading into?

Why? Because it is there. Because the human

spirit wont take no for an answer. Because adrenaline is

a drug that feeds the soul. And because for those lucky

few able to run faster, jump higher, throw farther and

    dive deeper, glory awaits.

    So we play.

But not all of us are built for speed. Fewer still are built

to absorb the punishment sports inflict. And

none of us are eternally sixteen years old.

    So we get hurt.

But we dont mind. Even the biggest,

strongest, and fastest of us get hurt. We

accept that as part of sport. What we

dont like, what we detest, is not being

    able to play.

    Thats where Campbell Clinic

    comes in.

Our sports medicine staff specializes in

getting athletes off the training table and

back on the field as quickly as possible. But

were not just experts in sports medicine,

were also the leader in general orthopaedics.

So is it any wonder that the most serious of

athletes, those from the professional and

    college ranks, choose Campbell Clinic?

And if people whose careers are dependent

upon healthy bodies think were the best, then

odds are were a pretty good choice for weekend

warriors, long-time couch potatoes, or anyone

who turns an ankle, wrenches a back or twists a wrist.

Because even if youre tough enough to play with pain,

theres no reason you should have to.

Why did you choose Memphis? I chose Memphis because its close to home and they have an awesome dance team; number two in the country.

Would you rather hit a grand slam or have Dennys GS for life? Defi nitely a grand slam in real life.

What is your perfect food grand slam? Th at would have to be hot wings, spicy fries, sweet tea from McDonaldsyoure welcome for the free adand some Sour Patch Kids.

What do you think the new mascot should be for Ole Miss? Th ey should be the Frat Daddies. Everyone there is all about fraternities and sororities so it fi ts perfectly!

Would you rather be at a basketball game with a

small crowd or one at the FedEx forum? Defi nitely a big

crowd. Not only does that pump everyone in the stands up, but

    also the players and us.

Whats your favorite part about being on the dance team? Going to

Nationals in January. We fi nished second this year in pom, a category

they just brought back, and hip hop.

What do you think should be done about the Liberty Bowl? Knock it down!

    Whats your major? Dance Education.

What do you plan on doing after graduation? I would love to work at an dance art school or, hopefully, open up my own studio.

Most embarrassing moment? Th at would be my fi rst basketball game. I was a freshman and totally forgot everything I was supposed to do.

Whats one improvement youd like to see as a member of the dance team? I want to win Nationals. I know itll happen this year. We have the girls and the talent to do it.

If you could eat at one fast food chain for the rest of your life, which would it be? Wendys. I love dipping their fries into the frosty.

Youre at the gym and need a song to get you through to end your work out. What is the worst song that you could hear at that moment? Anything by Lady Gaga.

MMany so-caalleed fans out there saaid GGrizzlies OOwwner Michael Heisleey wwould not ppaay to keep Rudy. Heeissley ysaaid all alonng he wasnt letting himm goo.

RRudy likes iit hhere and has said too mme peersonally hhe wants to stay. So, nnoow RRudys heree annd Heisleys payingg tto kkeep hiim. Again, wwhats all the fuss abboout??

Pllus, the Grrizzz knew Gays suitoorss inncluded noot only Minnesota, bbutt NNew York, NNNew Jersey, and Miaammi, (wwhom he ppuut 41 on last season.) Alll are deestination loocations with aboutt $$30 mmillion eachh tto spend on free aggenncy..

CChris Wallaacee, the Grizzlies GMM, says thhose teamss hhad the capability too froont looad a deall foor Rudy that coulddvee paaid hiim as mucch as $24 million for thhe fifi rst

Th The Grizzliies just spent four yeaarss cuultivating tthhis kid. Hes only 233 annd hes fi naallly got a head coachh inn LLionel Holllinns who believes in hhimm. (FFratello diddnnt believe in playinng roookies, Iavvarroni ignored him, aandd Barone, Sr. waas an interim.)

YoYou want thhe Grizzlies to becommee thee CClippers? OOwwner Donald Sterlingg waas notorious foforr letting really goodd pplayers wwalk aft er thheeir rookie deals expireed.

Soome facts. RRudy is one of only seevenn pllayers in thhe league to average rrigght at 200ppg and at least 1.5 steals a gaamme.

HHe is a big sshot taker and a big sshoot mmaker at thhe eend of games. Hes wwon seeveral for uus on last second shots,, annd/or had biig fourth quarters tto geet us back orr keep us in games.

Pllus, Gays ddeeal couldve been biiggger. AAs his origiinaal team, the Grizzliiess coouldve off fferred six years at $96 mmillion. Noo oother team could doo tthatt.

AAs it stand noow, should the Grizzzllies wwant to moovee him in the future,, thhis deeal is not ccraazy considering thee mmonney beeing tossedd aaround to other freee ageents.

Foor those of yyou who think Gayy, wwho balkedd aat the fi ve years at $500 mmillion the GGrizz off ered beforee laast seeason, wouulddve taken, say $65 mmill? CCmon! St. Benedict at Auburndale High School has certainly had its fair share of great athletes. Th e Soaring Eagles Track Club continues that tradition with members who are or have been a part of SBA athletics. Th e club, which is coached by SBA Head Track Coach Dianna Cervetti, competed recently in the Junior Olympics Track and Field Meet at Brentwood High School (Nashville). Th ough there are a number of events involved in the Junior Olympics program, athletes have the opportunity to progress all the way to the National Championships in Sacramento, CA.

All six Soaring Eagles competed at either the intermediate (ages 14-15) or young men/women (ages 16-18) levels and every one of them earned top three by medals along with a spot in the Regional Level July 10-11 in Monroe, LA.

Th ose advancing from the intermediate level were Aaron Caprio, a sophomore who earned second place in pole vault, Alexa Armstrong, another sophomore who took second place in both the 800M and 1500M as well as fourth in the triple jump and another sophomore in Colin Pitawanakwat, who grabbed third place in the 3000M. Th e young men/women level saw senior Michael Caprio nab fi rst place in pole vault, Brad Pitawanakwat, a University of Alabama at Lakeland freshman, bring home fi rst place in both the 1500M and 5000M, and senior Luke James earn third place in the 800M.

With great talent, dedication and coaching, theres no doubt these Eagles will continue to soar both during and aft er their SBA years. M

    11. The Club at Northcreek No. 13Par 5 491 yards

Without a doubt, the attention grabber on this hole for most will be the double green it shares with Northcreeks No. 15 and the cart path that ventures underneath it the only such green in the world. But there are plenty of other standout features

to this truly links-style hole. You have to hit a draw off the tee, which is tough for most people, said Golf Pro Alan Hickam. Th e dogleg left shape to the hole certainly provides challenges off the tee and on the approach shot, with bunkers in play both in the fairway and in the front and back of the green.

    12. Plantation Golf Club No. 18Par 4 437 yards (Pictured on page 13)

Th is 437-yard par 4 can play either longer or shorter, depending on how daring you want to get with your tee shot. A relatively wide fairway is guarded on the left by a large lake and on the right by bunkers. Th e left side of the fairway will give you a shorter approach, but bring the

water into play, said Golf Pro Quincy Morrison. But the right side makes for a longer, more diffi cult shot to an elevated green. Th e approach will have to go over the lake no matter which side of the fairway youre on, but the green slopes back to front and is also protected by a bunker on the front left .

    10. Windyke Country Club West Course No. 9Par 4 355 yards

Th e back nine opens up with much the same verve as the front nine closed. Another par 4 the only back-to-back par 4s on the course starts off what will be an extremely challenging back nine. At 355 yards, length is not the concern with this hole. Not only is the front of the green protected entirely by water, but there are also bunkers surrounding it, requiring an extremely accurate approach. Th is hole brilliantly proves that par 4s dont have to be pushing the 500-yard mark to be diffi cult.

    13. Colonial Country Club South Course No.12Par 3 230 yards

To say this is a long and diffi cult par 3 would be putting it mildly. Yes 230 yards is a long tee shot for most average golfers, but throw in the fact that those 230 yards are all carry over water which also happens to cozy up right to the front of the green and youve got not only an incredibly diffi cult hole to play, but one that is just as hard to visualize from the tee box. Golf is mostly played in those six inches between your ears and this hole will put pressure on every one of them.

    PLANTATION

  • www.memphissport.net | 15

    17. Quail Ridge No.6Par 3 220 yards

Our fi rst par three is a diffi cult one. Its 220 yards provides the fi rst challenge in club selection on the tee box. Th ats a long way for average golfers who will probably have to decide between a long iron and a fairway metal. Th e elevated tee box is tucked into the trees, giving an almost claustrophobic feel. Th e area around the green opens up, but there

is trouble with a bunker short left and another on the right. Th ere is also a drop off behind the back-to-front sloping green, making short the much safer and smarter play.

    18. Spring Creek Ranch No. 18Par 5 564 yards

Th e fi nishing hole of this dream course is both beautifully brilliant and spectacularly challenging. Dont let the clear, fl owing

water of Spring Creek which babbles along the entire left side of the fairway lull you into a state of golfi ng bliss because youll need all of your wits about you for this one last task. Th e undulating fairway could both help or hurt depending on where you land, so its probably best to avoid getting too close to the creek. Th e right side, however, off ers little respite with woods lining most of the trek to the green. Most golfers will be laying up, which will set up a slightly uphill approach to a bunker-protected green. Par at this fi nisher is a great score. A birdie is like stealing. And bogey or worse is probable.

    14. Ridgeway Country Club No. 18Par 5 550 yards

Th is fantastically diffi cult par 5 is the start of a brutal fi ve-hole closing stretch to our Memphis Holes of Fame. A large lake and two fairway bunkers linger to the right, a smaller lake guards the left

and yet another lake stares right back at you from the middle, around 300 yards out. Reaching this green in two shots is made more diffi cult by an approach that will probably range between 260 and 290 yards. A large oak tree stands guard in front of the green, ready to swat down any wayward approaches.

    15. Stonebridge Golf Club No.6Par 5 578 yards

Th is hole is intimidating right from the start. Trees border both sides of a fairway that winds slightly to the left and back to the right to an elevated green. Water comes into play on the left side of the fairway and again on

the right near the green. With a bunker also protecting the front of the green, this hole provides a number of challenges, not the least of which is its length. Th ree smart, well-played shots could result in a birdie opportunity. Hit one bad shot, however, and you could be ripping up your scorecard.

    16. The Links at Cottonwoods No. 16Par 3 181 yards

Th e attention-grabbing view from the tee box includes an amazing view of the Harrahs Resort in the backdrop. Th is daunting tee shot has water seemingly everywhere, as it protects nearly the entire green. Somehow there is room for three bunkers between all that water and the green, with bunkers front right, back right and back left . While the distance of this hole may be somewhat more manageable some of the other par 3s on our course, the amount of trouble promises to wreck havoc on most scorecards.

compiled by MEMPHIS SPORT descriptions by MIKE BULLARD

    and KEVIN CERRITO

Unlike other reader voted awards in Memphis, the M Awards have nominees. It is an honor to be nominated. Every year, the M Awards

Selection Committee meets to decide on the deserving contenders for each

category. So when fan voting begins at memphissport.net, it is a battle of the best.

When voting for the 3rd Annual M Awards ended on June 12th, history

happened. For the fi rst time ever, a write-in

    candidate won a

    category.

Imagine Dark Knight getting a write-in win for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Imagine Steve Cohen getting a write-in win for Mayor. Stuff like that never happens. Write-in wins just dont happen.

But when you are the new young head coach of one of the citys most beloved institutions, anything can happen. You can get top recruits for the 2010 class in your fi rst few months... and you can win Favorite Coach, even without coaching a single game.

So this year, the M Awards will not only Celebrate the Best in Memphis Sports but we will also Celebrate the Write-In by highlighting notable

    Basketball I think

Its been an eventful year for sports in Memphis. From UFC, to Allen Iverson (who?), to a quick dose of reality for Tiger basketball. There have been shake-ups in Memphis sports media and even a case of life imitating art when Lionel Hollins gave Jarvis Greer a #thundastick during a post-game press conference.

And in the 2010 M Awards, we have a little bit of it all repeat winners who dont look like theyre going anywhere, new winners who will probably hold the crown as long as they never bolt for Kentucky and a few new winners that are tough to swallow.

A number of winners this year join an exclusive club not one of these 4-time winners have ever lost their respective categories. Prince Mongo, heir to the throne of Zambodia, has transported himself in to bless the M Awards with his presence. Prince Mongo wanted to make some out of this world comments on these grand slam winners. So we obliged his highness. Without further ado, the winners of the 4th Annual M Awards winners.

Th e always entertaining and oft en controversial Price Mongo gave his fi rst major interview since the 2009 election LIVE in studio

on the Tuesday, June 29, 2010 edition of Memphis Sport Live (MSL). As part of his appearance, Mongo took phone

calls and answered questions fr om fellow spirits. Listen to the full audio of the interview

at Memphissport.net and tune in to MSL with Kevin Cerrito

    HALL OF LEGENDS

grand slam WINNER for favorite golfer: john daly

    MONGO SAYS: I like

    John, but I think

    he has had a little

    he is a good man,

    he just has a little

    weakness hes gotta

    overcome and I think

    he tries hard. I have

    got nothing bad to

    say about John Daly.

Th is year, Memphis Sport inducted Larry Finch, Reggie White, Anfernee Penny Hardaway, Jerry Th e King Lawler, Tamika Whitmore and John Daly as the very fi rst class into the Hall of Legends.

LARRY FINCHTh e favorite son of Orange Mound and arguably Melrose Highs most famous alum, will be most remembered for helping guide Memphis State to the 1973 National Championship game in St. Louis, where the Tigers were trounced by big man Bill Walton and UCLA. Not only that, Finchlong before his tumultumous hardship in his post-coaching stintis considered the most-celebrated coach in University of Memphis basketball history, having amassed the most victories in the programs history.

REGGIE WHITEConsidered one of footballs most-feared defensive tackles, whose Hall of Fame career ranks among the best in NFL history. Nicknamed the Th e Minister of Defense because of his relentless football smarts and off -the-fi eld ministry, White amassed more than 200 career sacks and is currently second on the NFLs all-time list. Th ough his life was cut short seven years ago, the former Tennessee All-Americans professional career began in Memphis as a member of the Showboats of the defunct USFL.

ANFERNEE PENNY HARDAWAYTh at Memphis is a basketball-crazed town, Hardaway surely is considered the best player this town has ever produced. Th e former Treadwell Parade All-American, who played 14 mostly-injured seasons in the NBA from 1992-2006, was a four-time NBA All-Star who is

mostly known for giving Hall of Famer Michael Jordan all he can muster in the 1995 Eastern Conference Finals. Hardaway played two seasons for the U of M before his collegiate career ended where his NBA career beganin the city of Orlando.

JERRY THE KING LAWLERFor a town that has entertained hundreds of household name wrestlers, neither was bigger than Lawler who, like Hardaway, hails from Treadwell High. Th e winningest active wrestler in the world, Lawler is widely known for his work as a color commentator for WWEs Raw, one of Americas top weekly cable shows. Long before he started calling matches, Lawler was a force in the squared circle, having won more than 125 titles, most notably his fi rst world heavyweight championship in May 1978.

TAMIKA WHITMOREAnother Memphis basketball star. Tamika still holds numerous records at the University of Memphis. She has done a great deal of charity work in the Memphis area, especially speaking to children at local area schools. Tamika also is a published author, producing a childrens book in 2001 entitled, Rookie: Tamika Whitmores First Year in the WNBA.

JOHN DALYJohn Daly, a stranger to no one in the Memphis area, has endured an array of hardships since his professional tenure began, but is also known for his involvement in various charities, most notably several in northwest Arkansas. Additionally, Daly is also an active supporter of the sports programs at the University of Arkansas.

Th e M Awards continue all year long with the addition of the Hall of Legends. Each year six new Legends will be inducted into the Hall, an honor given to a local sports icon whose athletic contributions and public infl uence have had perennial eff ects on Memphis and the Mid-South.

You can get the summer body you have always wanted. But you have to get started excercising to make it happen. If you would like more assistance or advice, call them at 901-454-0003, or visit them at 2858 Poplar Avenue.

TRICEPS PULL DOWNEveryone wants good looking arms, but not everyone knows that a majority of the muscle in his/her arm is the tricep.

    DO

    DO NOT

DO Grab the chord and stand close enough to the machine so that youre pulling straight down. When your elbow has a 90 degree bend, begin to pull back down, and repeat.

DO NOT Stand too far away. Th is will not maximize your eff orts. Also be sure to assume a stable enough position and enough weight so that you can complete the motion using only your arms.

ABDOMINAL TWISTS Laying on the ground with your legs elevated and your hands on your ears, twist your torso, touching your elbow to its opposite knee (left elbow to right knee).

DO Extend your legs fully. Th is guarantees that you will work your whole car.

DO NOT Cheat. Dont forget to twist your core all the way or extend your legs. Also be sure to not elevate your legs too high.

FROG HOPSTh is is a simple exercise to tone your legs. Grab a weight, and hop off the ground.

DO Keep your back straight and hop with the weight held fi rmly in your hands. Keep your knees slightly bent while doing this exercise, using your toes to clear the ground.

DO NOT Bend your back. If you bend too far over you could hurt your lower back. Also, be sure to keep your legs bent so that you work your upper legs and calves.

BUTTERFLYTh e butterfl y is instrumental for getting your upper body in shape. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, lay on a bench and touch the weights in front of your chest.

DO Be sure to use a slow, steady, smooth motion. Emphasize your pectorals.

DO NOT Lock your elbows. If you do this you will work your arms and not your back. Th is could also result in an injury.

DUMBBELL RISERTh is is another exercise to tone your arms and also work your shoulders. All you need to do is grab a dumbbell and pull it from the ground and raise it to your head.

DO Assume a wide stance with a weight in your hand. Raise the weight from the ground so that it is next to your head. Make sure you can feel the muscles in your back and your triceps working.

DO NOT Bend too far over. Th is is just another way to potentially hurt your back. To avoid this, make sure your legs are spread wide enough to maintain your balance.

of CHET DEMBINSKY AND COACH CALbyy JACK EATOONNYou have probablyy neever heard of Chet Dembinskky, but hhis stoory is one of the moost amazing stories I have eveer hheard..

Buut before we get to thatat my house we like to wwattch thhe Keentucky derby, nneveer mind that it is in Louisville. WWe likke thhe most excitingg twwo minutes in sports and alwwayss tunee in ffor all the pre-racee stuff . Th is year, sure as shoottin,, whoo turrns up on our TTV, bbut Coach Cal. Th ere he wass, biig as lifee, bragging abouut thhe great season his Kentuckyy WWildcaats hadd35 wins and a trrip to the Elite Eight. Howevver, he diid not mention that his teams, UMASS and Memphhis, had bbeen kiccked out of the FFinnal Four, but he did mention UUMMASSS in passsing. I was waittingg for the interviewer to ask hhimbut no dicce. It almost ruinnedd the whole race for me, but II suurviveed.

Cooach Cal also shhowwed up at the NBA draft teleccastt and braagged about all his players that were taken in thhe fifi rst rouund. Had I beenn thhere, I would have asked if Johhn Wall woould be taking a payy cut when he enters the NBAA.

As I watched him I foondly recall the Kentucky/WWestt Virrginia game in tthe Elite Eight. Kentucky missedd alll theeir three-pointers in the fi rst half and by the timme tthey fouund their range it wwas too late. How sweet it waas.

Noot only because Cooach Cal and Kentucky lost. YYouu seee, West Virginiaa annd I go back a long way.

It wwas 1946, WWWII hhad only been over for a year.. ThTh e vetts were comming back in drrovees and high school kids had aa reaal chaallenge forr playing time. ThTh e Mountaineers had beaten uss byy 50 ppoints on our fl oor. Heavven help us when we went to Moorggantowwn.

As a freshman, I wwas way down on the depth charrt annd as succh did not expecct tto play much. We came out oon thhe fl ooor andd the WVU fanns wwent nuts. I remember their fifi ghht song:

OOh West VirginiiaWWest VirginiaTh The pride of everyy MMountaineer.

Coome on you old graads, join all you young ladsAnnd sing out a miightty cheer.

Annd then they reaally sang out a mighty cheer. I haad nnever heaard such a rackeet. ThTh en the game started and thhey got

eveen louder. We loost. I dont remember the score bbut it waasnt close. Here I mmust add, we beat them the nnextt threee yeaars on our fl oor andd when we were seniors they hadd to cheeat us to win byy thrree in Morgantown. So theree.

Noow Chet Dembiinskky. He played for Westminsteer CCollee and waas one of the bettterr players in our circles. I dontt remmembber us ever beating thee TTitans but we had good gamess. CChet wwas an all-star and a gooodd guy. I met him one summerr. A kid ffrom myy home town plaayed for Westminster and he inttrodducedd mee to Chet. We wwereent exactly buddies but I liked hhim.

Chhet was a year ahhead of me and upon his graduaationn weent off to play foor thhe Akron Goodyears of the IInduustriaal League. In those ddayss big companies had basketbaall tteamss thaat carried their llogoos around the nation. Teams likee thee Phillips Oilerss, Foort Wayne Zollner Pistons, DDennver Truuckers, Chicagoo Paackers and the Akron Goodyyearrs.

Because I knew Chett, I wanted to follow his careeer witth Akron. But II neever saw his name in the box sscores. WhWhat, I wonderedd, hhappened to Chet Dembinskyy? WeWe always played thee Goodyears so I looked forwwardd to the game to fi ndd out what happened to him.

Th The teams took thhe flfl oor for warm ups andbingootthere waas Chet Dembinnskyy. What the heck is going on?

I ddidnt get a channce tto talk to him until aft er the gammewe won it bby tthe wayand here is his story:

Chhet got married aft eer graduation and there was tthe rubb. His girlfriendd said she would not go thru lifee as Mrrs. Dembinsky, so CChet changed his name to Chett Claare and I assumme livved happily ever aft er. If therre iss anoother story like thaat one. I have never heard it.

Alll Tigers fans hope wwe can get into a BCS conferrennce, but at this writingg it ddoes not look too promisingg.

Th There are Tiger fanns wwho would gladly change theeir nnamee to get

intto a BCS conferrencce. How about, R.C. Dembinnskky? Naah!!!!

Bigg Jack can be heaardd every Friday at 8am on KWAWAMM 990 aloongside former CCouunty Commissioner John Williinghgham.
