BRING IT ON: THE MUSICALKeeps It Real With Cheerleaders In Cast

The explosive new musical comedy, BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL presented some interesting

challenges during casting. Director-choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler needed actors and dancers that could sing, dance and build human pyramids.

Soon Blankenbuehler figured out that he would need to bring in the pros: Cheerleaders who worked professionally or were top competitors in college. Experienced singers and dancers handle the lead roles (So You Think You Can Dance fans will spot finalist Neil Haskell!), while a squad of 12 championship-level cheerleaders flip and fly for the jaw-dropping stunts.

The challenge for performers with cheerleading experience was not only their singing roles, The Times reported, but also the need to bring life and texture to their movements as they transitioned from NBA courts and football fields to bright, shrunken theater stages. “In cheering, everything is very

rigid and sharp,” says David Ranck, a former cheerleader for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association. “Clean lines. That’s it. Being in this show has changed everything about how I perform.”

In the end, around 4,000 people auditioned for the tour.

There’s another authentic cheerleading connection besides the pros. The show teamed up with Varsity, a group that oversees the Universal Cheerleaders Association, which practices the frill-free, gymnastic form of the collegiate competitive sport. Varsity supplies uniforms and helped Blankenbuehler devise a mat that would provide extra spring for the tumblers without creating a double-bounce for the dancers.

The result works, says Blumenthal Performing Arts President Tom Gabbard, who attended the opening night of BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL in Los Angeles. “When I go to a show, I spend a lot of my time listening to the

audience and watching their expressions. So much of what I need to know about whether a show is ‘working’ can be gleaned by carefully observing an audience,” Gabbard said.

“One of the things that struck me about BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL was how quickly the audience was thoroughly captivated by this cast. They willingly joined the emotional journey of the cast, and were thrilled by the amazing acrobatic feats that are throughout.”

Finally, the musical also has another secret weapon: The creative team features Broadway’s top tier of talent with Blankenbuehler and Lin Manuel Miranda, who worked together on In The Heights, Tom Kitt of Next To Normal and Jeff Whitty from Avenue Q.

A John Williams Spectacular

His music is inextricably linked to some of the most powerful scenes in cinematic history.

He’s made us laugh, cry, shiver in fear and wriggle with excitement. John Williams’ film scores are some of the most recognizable and have been heard by millions in some of the biggest blockbusters in film history including Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, and Harry Potter.

Without the ominous two-note motif, the terrifying opening scene from Jaws is simply a woman swimming in the ocean. The numerous themes and leitmotifs from Star Wars distinguish the heroes from the villains. The “Flight to Neverland” from Hook pulls at our heartstrings and reminds us of the ever-present child inside.

On February 10 & 11, the Charlotte Symphony will perform A John Williams Spectacular. This concert

presents the audience the opportunity to experience the music behind some of Hollywood’s best-known and most-loved films. Featured in this stunning presentation of music from the big screen are selections from E.T., Harry Potter, Star Wars, Hook, Schindler’s

List and more. Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos will lead the Charlotte Symphony through the triumphant “Raider’s March,” synonymous with Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and the

Oratorio Singers of Charlotte will add their collective vocal power to works from Star Wars Episodes 1 and 3.

This concert features works that will rivet listeners of all ages and provide a new kind of entertainment for the whole family. Don’t miss A John Williams Spectacular!

Sleeping Beauty a fantastical fairy tale ballet

Sleeping Beauty’s timeless tale of a beautiful princess, a dashing prince and the triumph of good

over evil with a single kiss has delighted audiences of all ages for years. In March 2012, North Carolina Dance Theatre performs Sleeping Beauty for the first time.

President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, who is known for creating spectacular classical ballets including Nutcracker, Cinderella and Peter Pan, is choreographing Dance Theatre’s production. “Sleeping Beauty is the essence of classical ballet, and I believe Charlotteans will enjoy the opulent sets and costumes of this spectacular performance,” said Bonnefoux.

The ballet was originally choreographed in 1890 by Marius Petipa, with

music composed by Tchaikovsky. “I’m really looking forward to Dance Theatre’s production of Sleeping Beauty,” said dancer Alessandra Ball, currently in her eighth season with the company. “The ballet is magical, and I’m excited to see how Jean-Pierre brings the story to life on stage.”

Bonnefoux plans to draw on his past to bring something special to his version of Sleeping Beauty. “I have a unique perspective on Petipa and Tchaikovsky because of my tenure as a principal dancer at Paris Opera Ballet and New York City Ballet,” said Bonnefoux.

This March take your family on a whimsical journey to an enchanted kingdom, as the beloved childhood story of Sleeping Beauty is sure to leave audiences of all ages feeling happily ever after.

Opera Carolina’s Madama Butterfly Inspires Collaborative Performing and Visual Arts Feast

Madama Butterfly, ranked number one in Opera America’s list of the 20 most performed operas, has

always wooed audiences. Opera Carolina’s new production, set for January 2012, soars to new heights with a mélange of international star power and stunning artistic design.

The magnificent cast, led by acclaimed Korean soprano Yunah Lee as Madama Butterfly, with Brazilian tenor Fernando Portari making his US debut here in Charlotte, and American baritone Todd Thomas, promise an evening of spellbinding performances. The breathtaking sets and costume designed by Japanese-born ceramicist and painter Jun Kaneko bring new dynamism to Puccini’s beloved masterpiece.

Kaneko, whose art work is displayed in more than 40 museum collections including Charlotte’s Mint Museum, gives Madama Butterfly an avant-garde look without compromising Japanese history. Opera magazine hailed his designs as ‘visually daring while remaining true to the essence of the music and drama.’

In a special collaboration between Opera Carolina and The Mint Museum, Jun Kaneko’s art works will be showcased at the new Mint Museum Uptown in a boutique

exhibition, Jun Kaneko: In The Round, from December 10, 2011 through April 28, 2012. The exhibit will feature four of Kaneko’s Dango sculptures, in addition to costume drawings and set designs he has rendered for the Madama Butterfly production. The sculptures will be presented in the Robert Haywood Morrison Atrium, as well as in the Teresa and David Carroll Gallery.

The Mint’s presentation of Kaneko’s drawings, installed on the Mezzanine, will provide insight into the creative process of costume and set design. Viewers may see the continuity in the pattern and design of Kaneko’s

drawings, as they relate to his sculptures, which are influenced by traditional ceramic techniques and ancient Shinto concepts. For more information, please visit mintmuseum.org

Opera Carolina’s production of Madama Butterfly performs over two weekends: January 21, 26 and 29 at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. For ticket information, call 704.372.1000 or visit operacarolina.org

The 2011-2012 Season of Opera Carolina is underwritten by a generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Private Bank. The Jun Kaneko: In The Round exhibition at The Mint Museum has been made possible with generous support from Wells Fargo.
