03/06 CARLOS MAGNO – MÚSICAS PARA UMA LENDA
CHARLEMAGNE – MUSIC FOR A LEGEND
Queremos saber a sua opinião
Carlos, dito Magno, restaurador do Império Romano do Ocidente,
e dedica-lhe novos versos. No séc.
do séc.

falam do amor possessivo pelas 11 filhas, a quem negou
popularidade.”
do herói Carlos, personificação do herói medieval: o Guerreiro,
o Amante, o Cristão.
Charles the Great, restorer of the Western Roman Empire,
a monarch-warrior, Defender of the Faith and, simultaneously
a rampant and highly sensual sinner is, in reality, many men. Each
of these men represents a character, a model, an archetype, a great
source of both stories and History. In his time, he was both feared
and respected, marvelled at both for his cruel and bloody conquests
and his enlightened reforms – which enabled the rebirth of a great
past hitherto deemed dead, and calling to his side both fierce men
of arms and peaceful men of great intellectual learning.
The court historians and biographers, alongside minstrels and
storytellers, contributed to the many legends surrounding his
fame and that were to grow throughout the course of the Middle
Ages: Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne or Karl der Große shared with
King Arthur the honour of being the hero of one of the greatest
narrative cycles of the period and with each century both endowing
it with new embellishments and dedicating new verses. The 12th
century saw efforts to canonise him and he today continues to gain
recognition as a “founder” of the European Union.
There is no remaining evidence of the music played in his palace
in Aquisgrano (today, Aachen): the musical manuscripts of the
9th century convey “only” the immense heritage of liturgical singing
that was handed down under the respected label of “Gregorian” but
which was above all the extraordinary sonorous result of the titanic
undertakings of Charles: unifying the territories of his Empire and
rendering so many peoples into a single Culture resting upon
a single Faith.
An exemplary heir to the Germanic ideas and traditions of the noble
warrior, he embraced the cause of the Church with absolute loyalty
to the Bishop of Rome and probably not only out of his political
vision of the future – should we believe his biographers, he would
have spent his final years in prayer and withdrawn from public life.
The same biographers also detailed substantial information about
his five wives and far more numerous concubines, speaking of his
possessive love for his eleven daughters, who were denied official
marriages, his passion for good food (which brought him problems
with gout), the daily swimming sessions in the palace thermal spa
in order to maintain his warrior body in shape, but… “Whenever
there was any divergence between the Christian teachings and the
warrior ideal, Charles would not waste much time with problems
of conscience: his ascendance and very strength derived from the
naïve simplicity of his way of acting and the naturalness with which
he convinced himself that any of his actions could only ever be
just and fair. In Charles, his contemporaries recognised a man like
themselves and for this reason not even were his errors able
to undermine his popularity” (Heinrich Fichtenau, O Império
Carolíngio, 1958).
LaReverdie chose, from the musical repertoire that flourished in the
centuries following the founding of the Holy Roman Empire (10th
century), some of those excerpts that sing of the diverse faces
of our hero Charles, the personification of the medieval hero: the
Warrior, the Lover,
the Christian.

PROGRAMA PROGRAMME
O GUERREIRO | THE WARRIOR
prosperidade.
The King, who excelled all the princes of his time in wisdom and
greatness of soul, did not suffer difficulty to deter him or danger to
daunt him from anything that had to be taken up or carried through,
for he-had trained himself to bear and endure whatever came,
without yielding in adversity, or trusting to the deceitful favors of
fortune in prosperity.
