Rev. 3:20 “Behold, I standat the door, and knock: if anyman hear my voice, and openthe door, I will come in to him,and will sup with him, and hewith me.”
I remember an old picture that hung in the hallway of my grand-motherʼs house. It was a reprint of a very famous painting by theartist, Warner Sallman, entitled “Christ at Heartʼs Door.” Grandmapointed out to me that there was no door latch on the outside of thedoor. It had to be opened from the inside just like folks today mustopen the heartʼs door to receive Jesus. The imagery is telling andcertainly made an impression on my young heart.
As I grew older and came across the verse in the Bible that thiswork of art was based upon I was surprised that, in context, it wasnot a verse directed at non-Christians. On the contrary, it was di-rected toward a church full of professed born again Christians whothought that they were “all that and a bag of chips”. They thoughtthat they were “rich, and increased with goods, and have need ofnothing.” (Rev 3:17) They did not even need Him!
Jesus points out that they were really lukewarm, wretched, mis-erable excuses for followers of Jesus. They were tepid and insipidand out of fellowship with the Savior. Jesus stands at the door offellowship. Will you let Him in?
