The French-Hungarian Moon Valley winery, one of the finest producers of the Tokaj wine region uses both traditional and innovative modern technol-ogy to create their special quality wines. Since 2011, the original old cellar system has been renovated and extended with new additional units. Their main features are transparency and professionalism.
For us, as designers, it was very appealing to see this articulated, clean architectural language, and also the professional and engaged strategy of the wine-making. Both is about integrating ancient and new, traditional and high-tech elements. Deep down in the cellars, where the wine is being processed, there is a room, where our installation takes place. This space, which will be the location of winetastings and presentations, has special acoustic features too.

The Memborian is an object which integrates these two characteristics, being personal and sensitive at the same time. While working, it memboriates: therefore produces an audial experience from memories, feelings and resonations. This process refers to the making of a good wine, which, in itself, is a mysterious, obscure procedure, only accessible to few, concluding in an essence which means more than just itself. The whole object models the circulation of the liquids both in nature and in us. When wet arrives above the grapeyards in the shape of clouds, pours over, falls down, penetrates the earth, gets deep down to the roots, then to the plant itself, to the leaves and fruits, then travels to the barrels, from the barrels to the bottles, the glasses, the mouth, the sensory nerves, and then to the brain. Then this additive impulse becomes a part of our days, just as well as the f luid becomes a part of our body, while some of it escapes and gets back to the circulation. This process is never-ending, it starts over and over again.

The main material is copper. Compared to stainless steel, it is much easier to work with, and also the price makes it more accessible. Copper was traditionally used both for spirit- and winemaking. Since heating systems use it too, it seemed a good choice to rely on the exisiting modular system for building up the structure of the instal-lation.
The graphic character of the tube system is created with ready-made parts. This also refers to the soundwaves and the pattern of rain. It makes a good option compared to individual tube-bendings too.
This pattern starts from two facing sides of the cellar, and runs up all along until the ceiling, where it becomes the supporting structure of the clouds. At the same time. one side is holding the cables for the electricity, the other circulates the water. The tubular system adapts to the shape of the space, being made from D18 mm copper tubes (altogether 120 meters), and 200 pieces of special-shaped units.
TECHNOLOGY

The shape of the clouds was inspired by the steel tanks used in the winery. These precise, industrial objects still have an interesting character, and besides their play-fulness, their strict, industriaé capsule-shape appears in the clouds too. In order to create an organic, spontaneous impression, the measures of the clouds were drawn individually, so there aren’t any alike.
The water is circulated by a pump, therefore creating a dripping and streaming sound inside the tubes and clouds. There we hid some sensors too, which re-acts to the visitor when standing under them. Then they start to play the locally recorded sounds, to underline the importancy of the human component in the whole process.

The electronics consist of four parts: infrared sensors, arduinos, magnetic resonators and amplif i-ers. The sensors react to the pres-ence of a visitor, then send a signal to the computer which starts to play the sounds, which can be nat-ural, humane or industrial. These sounds are complimented by the noises of the water circulation.
