About this major If you are creative, love science and want to work with people, Science Communication is for you. Science communicatorsuse their knowledge of science to help raise the level of understanding about important issues in science—bridging the gapbetween the scientific community and the public. This major will teach you to communicate effectively with audiencesranging from children to scientists. Science Communication provides you with experience in new media, written, oral andvisual presentations, and science performance. Throughout the major you will be working with industry experts to enhanceyour networking and employment opportunities, including an opportunity for a work placement. This major must be taken inconjunction with another science major, giving you both sound scientific knowledge and highly marketable communicationskills.
Outcomes # Outcome
1 demonstrate the ability to identify and align key message, audience and medium, by (a) identifying specific audiences and framing messages to berelevant, and (b) articulating specific objectives for communication activities
2 create effective communication resources, by (a) applying principles of engagement and participation, and (b) developing a portfolio of work in avariety of media for different audiences
3 evaluate the effectiveness of science communication, by (a) applying best practice findings from the research literature, (b) formulating explicitfeedback and useful recommendations, and (c) accepting and implementing feedback on own work
4 critically analyse and practice enquiry in science communication by reviewing and synthesising the science communication literature
5 act accountably for own learning, by (a) being independent and self-directed learners, (b) applying project management skills to workcollaboratively with clients and colleagues, and (c) acting ethically with regards to research, communication and intellectual property
As a result of a temporary reduction in 2018 in the number of Science Communication FTE, there are insufficient staff to deliver theprogrammes as approved. Substituting SCIE3318 with either SCIE2205 or SCIE2206 enables the continuation of experiential learning inthe major and at the same time consolidating teaching. In the revised structure the placement unit has become compulsory however thisis not inconsistent with the original offering as the majority of students who have completed the Science Communication major havetaken the placement unit SCOM3318.

Academic information
Content This unit will examine human-wildlife conflict in Sri Lanka. This is a 2 week field project in close collaboration withSabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.
Students will learn about the competing economic and conservation aims and land use in Sri Lanka, one of the world'sbiodiversity hotspots. There are two main agricultural activities, small scale village gardens and large scale commercial teaplantations. Both replace natural forests, the first human-wildlife conflict. Gardens are raided by wildlife, especially monkeysand elephants, creating the second human-wildlife conflict. The wildlife is valued by the tourism industry, creating a thirdconflict between agriculture and tourism.
UWA students will work with SUSL students in classes and research projects. Classwork will be complemented by field visitsto government departments (National Parks, Forest), industry (tea plantations) and NGOs, with suitable work relatedlearning. Learning outcomes will include a wider and deeper understanding of conversation and development issues, and agreater appreciation of Sri Lankan culture, and rebuilding after a long civil war.
UWA students will compare aspects of human-wildlife conflict in Sri Lanka with those present in Australia. The wildlifespecies, agricultural systems and culture differ, yet the problems are similar. This unit will allow the students to broadentheir experience of a widespread issue across the world
Outcomes Students are able to (1) understand economic drivers for different socio-economic levels in Sri Lankan Society; (2)understand risks from wildlife for different forms of agriculture and how they may be abated; and (3) learn wildlifemonitoring and biodiversity methods, assess utility in different habitats.

This project will allow UWA students to get a first-hand, work-related experience of Sri Lanka, and to apply part theircoursework to tropical Asian conditions. Student learning outcomes will include experience of Sri Lankan culture andlanguage, local economics, tropical environments, and how these factors influence development goals and challenges. Bythe end of the project, UWA students will have a deeper understanding of knowledge of Sri Lanka, its diverse people andculture, issues in their economic development and conserving their environment – especially iconic large mammals likeelephants and leopards. UWA students will work with contemporaries at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, in a “buddysystem”, with SUSL students helping to introduce UWA students to local Sri Lankan languages, manners and culturalprotocols, and enhance their awareness of this unique island country.
