INTRO WELCOME... As the nights draw in and weather takes a chilly turn, it’s clear that it’s time

to say a fond farewell to this year’s summer. And what a summer it’s been!

In our first year of business, we’ve been lucky enough to work with some

fantastic suppliers, delis and end consumers. When working with artisan

produce, it’s so important to know your products and where they come from.

We have been attending farmer’s markets all around Cheshire, Manchester

and Staffordshire, we’ve been meeting with retailers and doing the all-

important taste test of our supplier’s new products (it’s a hard life!).

Not only have we been fulfilling the needs of retailers with our food and drink

comparison website designed to help you find the products you need

(CompareYourSupplier.com, read more on page 4), we have also launched our

own online store where you can buy direct (CompareYourArtisan, com, page 7).

Not only are we selling wholesale and individual, we’ve also launched our

Artisan Selection boxes, a subscription box of speciality goods delivered

straight to your kitchen.

While selling to end consumer is great, our heart lies with helping small

businesses. As we are always looking for new ways to connect suppliers and

their potential buyers, we decided a monthly magazine was the best way to get

them straight to your doorstep. What’s better than reading about delicious

new gourmet products on your tea break?

INTRODUCING...

THE 1 COMPARISON WEBSITE FOR ARTISAN FOOD

AND DRINK SUPPLIERS!

Where it all began! Compare Your Supplier stemmed from a genuine problem we experienced as owners of a family run coffee shop and ice cream parlor. We had used the same suppliers since taking over the business a few years before, and didn’t have the time to really shop around for the best deal. When ordering up a box of ice cream cones, something we needed at least once a week, we realised our current supplier was charging us double the price and almost three times the delivery charge as another supplier in our local area. It got us thinking.

How much cheaper could I be getting my products? What deals am I missing out on elsewhere? If I switch suppliers how do I know they will be reliable and deliver to me on time? We needed a community, a space where businesses can talk to each other and advise each other. Out of this train of thought, Compare Your Supplier was born.

How does it work? We don’t just offer you a database of prices, we know that quality is just as important as quantity. Rather, you can create one simple order for all of your needs, select your criteria (delivery date and so on), and it will be sent out to all relevant suppliers. This then opens up a dialogue between you and your potential suppliers. You can chat and discuss products, prices and delivery to determine whether they are the right supplier for you.

The best part? It doesn’t eat away at your time. You can do all this in just a few clicks and then we do all the searching for you.

Compare Your Supplier is a completely free service for buyers and traders, all you need to do is create an account! Go to www.compareyoursupplier.com/register and underneath ‘BUYER’ click ‘register’ to sign up.

We hear a lot about buying fresh, organic, artisan products from local

suppliers for our food and drink establishments. We’ve compiled a

short list of why you should buy local if you’re in the catering industry.

1) It’s better food! Locally grown food is far fresher and more

nutritious than food from big companies or food that is imported.

Better quality, fresh food means more delicious food and satisfied

returning customers.

2) It supports your local farmers. Building relationships with

suppliers can often be overlooked if you’re a busy company. However

it’s extremely important as local producers will often have a much

deeper understanding of the product than large national companies

and can help inform you of the best products to go for depending on

the season and area that you are in.

3) It supports you! Research has shown that when you buy local, more of your money is spent on local

businesses. This means a boost in local economy and in turn means you are supporting your own business

while supporting others.

4) It’s good for the environment. Buying local means that you drastically reduce transport costs (imported

food often has to travel thousands of miles to get to you), less packaging is used – particularly plastic, it helps

to preserve open space and supports and benefits wildlife as food is grown within a more natural habitat.

These things may or may not be important to you personally, however there is a good chance they will be

important to your customers and a good selling point if nothing else.

5) It’s easy to find local suppliers. You could be forgiven for thinking that switching from a big national or

international supplier to a small local producer may involve a lot

of research and hassle. Well you’d be wrong! Finding a new

supplier can be fun, there’s likely to be a few regular farmers

markets in your area where you can go and try out the products

and chat to the suppliers face to face. Go to

www.seemylocalmarket.co.uk to find one near you! If you

haven’t got the time, or you’d just rather find someone from

comfort of your own office, Compare Your Supplier offer a free

service where you can search and compare suppliers for the

products that you want. Take a look for yourself here

Riverside

Lifestyle

Lemon & Ginger Marmalade

Winner of the Artisan Gold Award

The lemon and ginger marmalade is

made using fresh citron lemons and

crystallised ginger. The lemons are

soaked overnight with water and then

cooked slowly until soft; granulated

sugar is added to perfect the

sweetness before adding crystallised

ginger to give it its winning twist.

Mincemeat with Lavender

There’s a lot of work that goes into

making this luxury mincemeat – the

apple is hand-chopped, as are the

almonds. Only fresh lemon and orange

juice and zest are used, again all

prepared by hand. This Luxury

mincemeat is lovely at Christmas but

also throughout the year as a filling for

baked apple.

Loose Leaf Tea

Soothing refreshing loose leaf green

tea from Riverside Lifestyle. Infused

with lavender, this tea is a natural

caffeine free drink which can be

enjoyed at any time of the day, but

especially recommended after dinner

to help relax you, ready for bed. Tea as

it should be. A lovely gift.

Via Emilia

White Balsamic

Everyone always asks how white balsamic is

made. It is in effect a colourless balsamic

made from the Trebbiano grape which has

not caramelised. It also doesn’t undergo

ageing in wooden barrels which ensures a

milder and fruitier taste vs the regular

balsamic which has a richer flavour. Best

used- on salad, white meats, for de-glazing,

fish or any other cooking process where

you want the balsamic flavour without its

dark colour staining a lighter coloured dish.

Chilli Pepper and Tuna Fish

Spread

One of our personal favourites, with a

subtle taste of tuna and slight bite

from the pepperoncini chilli, this mixed

spread is a real showstopper and

delivers great flavour.

Fettuccine Pasta

From the Marche Region, a bright and

vibrant pasta full of flavour. It goes

exceptionally well with game or meat

based sauces.
