Meeting with colleagues and keeping in the know.

Staying in touch with my professional organization, colleagues, and the capsule view of what's going on in that

respect.

I believe BC retired teachers are fortunate to have the BCRTA as voice. Other professionals are not so lucky.

I appreciate the efforts and time of all those who volunteer (Or have volunteered -- in the past) for the various

BCRTA roles and responsibilities.

Keep retired teachers informed -- health, education, finances . Nice to know you are there for us.

You are doing a fantastic job. Also I am subbing in my retirement (6 years retired). for the past 2 years I have

also thought one day a week on a continuing contract. Keeps me connected and provides me with some extra

income.

Do not have a local branch. I love the magazine and reread it several times before passing it onto a friend. I

think it is great how it is. Really enjoy any articles about travel.

I love BCRTA!

I would love more discounts. Travel Medical insurance is important and our premiums are skyrocketing. My

husband has a pre-existing condition. Why can't Johnsons set a rate that will cover him? He has no opportunity

to travel. I like short articles and letters to the editor. And that Sheila Gair. I like her articles. She's the "ever-

moving bunny". My husband is my full time volunteer activity. A 40-hour week would be a holiday. But I don't

really mind. Keep writing. Keep articles short. lots of photos.

More of the same - doing a fine job.

I really appreciate all the hard work that our local executive VIRTA does.

I think that they are a vital link to al the other locals and they represent us well. Kudos to them.

(JoAnn's note: Respondent gives care to mother.)

I love BCRTA!

I enjoy what BCRTA provides. Thank you

I have great admiration and respect for the work being done by the BCRTA. With considerable determination

and sense of purpose, the dedicated individuals in the association advocate for and lobby on our behalf. The

collective wisdom and research into various topics have both proven very effective in attaining positive results.

I believe that individually, or as a small group, we would not have the same clout or be able to achieve similar

accomplishments. The Postscript Magazine is absolutely wonderful! I appreciate the well-written articles as

well as the diversity of issues and topics. they provide information, opinion, and a welcome opportunity for

some self-reflection. Bravo BCRTA!

I appreciate the PostScript magazine but I am probably missin g out on the email and newsletter as you don't

have my current email XXXXXXXXXXXXX Please add me to the list and keep up the work.

More information on travel opportunities.

Thanks for all you do!

I worked in one school district but live in a different area. I'd like to see an annual gathering where neighbouring

sd's get together. 😀

Like what I get.

I am very satisfied with the BCRTA! I look forward to the NEWS publication as it keeps me in "touch" with a

profession that I was so involved and proud o be a part of for a large time.

PostScript is usually interesting. I do enjoy he local RTA's coffee "meetings" with a guest speaker, always

interesting.

Am taking over finances and other jobs from my husband. I am still confused about the role Green Shield,

Johnson's and dental play. Is Blue completely gone?

I have very advanced osteoarthritis and a severe tremor. I have had to give up many activities I enjoy because

of my handicaps. I hope to be more active when I have my other knee replacement. My whole life is very

carefully organized so that I can be independent.

I love receiving the Postscript (so does my husband). I used to belong to and take an active part in our local

BCRTA, but falling membership and volunteers made me leave.

I appreciate the obituary page as I'm one who likes to keep in touch and know what's happening with others.

With the puzzles - do 2 sudokus go in one entry envelope?

I like articles on hobbies and "staying young".

I enjoy reading about retired teachers' experiences as a beginning teacher and what else they did throughout

their careers. This is in the "Postscript".

I look forward to and enjoy PostScript. The BCRTA gives me a heads-up on many areas. I was aware of the

Property Deferment in the summer edition but not the RDSP. I appreciate the variety of articles and especially

the information about "Government" activities and available plans e.g. CPP survivor benefits and time-lines for

application. (Good Times July/Aug 2019)

I think BCRTA could be a more vocal advocate for Public Education.

Less "braggy" travelogues in the newsletter - it could be much shorter with just important info re: health &

pensions (as well as education advocacy). Puzzles? - really?!!

Since I retired my husband has been ill and needed my help 24/7. During that time I have been limited in my

contact with outside of home activities. He recently passed away and I hope to have more contact with my

local branch etc. in the future.

I like the way that the BCRTA provides us with information on various topics and keeps us updated about

current issues in education.

I'd like to say thanks for all you do for us! I'm proud to be a member.

Commented - that she owns own home in a Vancouver co-housing complex of 31 multi-aged households. - that

major concern for her personally "I am OK now"

I appreciate the work of the many retired teachers who work for the BCRTA and Post Script. THANK YOU!

During my teaching life I was extremely active in all aspects of my local association- committees, executive,

staff rep. In retirement, I have not been personally involved with the BCRTA. I am grateful to all of those who

work on my behalf to ensure advocacy on behalf of retired teachers and seniors in general. I do look forward to

POSTSCRIPT - a very worthy publication.

I would like a return to Pacific Blue Cross. You do not get good coverage with the new provider, Green Shield.

I spend unpaid personal care for my sister.

The recent changes resulting from the Strategic Plan are working - better publications, increased staff, a plan for

the future. Advantage program items/benefit offerings/free 1st year are good draws for increased membership

and local branch revitalization, but we still need to focus on what else can be done to make local branches more

important to retired teachers. We have been doing great work nationally with ACER-CART - keep it up. Good

idea to do this survey.

Thanks to BCRTA Volunteers

sharing life experience

general information about education reforms

special political developments and human responses

Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your advocacy regarding Pension security!

Very happy with the organization as is.

I like the opportunities you present, the information on a wide variety of topics, and the positive perspective on

retirement.

(Claimed to not have a local branch even though lives in Lower Mainland.)

I think it's fine as is.

***I really depend on my Teacher's pension.***

I have never heard of the E-Newsletter or been on the website.

I retired and moved to Metro Vancouver. I went to an RT Langley meeting, but felt excluded as I hadn't taught

there. Perhaps someone, I'm not going to offer my time, should start a group for retired teachers who moved

to the Lower Mainland, Metro Vancouver, Okanagan so they can get in touch with other retired teachers.

Just a thought I've had. After not filling out any boxes in #19, I feel very fortunate. Thank you.

Why don't I hear/read about you E-newsletter? I read every issue, from cover to cover, for 14 years. I'm

enjoying my retirement, after a life of service to others. I would like to hear more about school programs for

students with learning challenges. It saddens & angers me, to see the loss of programs, trained staff &

advocacy. With the current "mainstreaming" policies, no one is being served well. Education, in BC, is heading

the way mental health did.

I always look forward for the next issue to keep up with what is going on with the BCRTA. Thank you.

Thank you for your advocacy and networking.

Just bought 6 books by Chris Harko, Harko Polo. They were advertised in Post Script last issue. A great read,

especially for an Indeavour(sic). Loved Sahara, this issue.

I am 78 and still work 1-2 shifts (10 hours) for Translink.

I read the obituaries first - I'm 81, and retired in 1997.

Health issues mean I don't want to travel any more . Paid off the mortgage this year- so that is not a worry.

The BCRTA is not paramount in my life now.

I really enjoy POSTSCRIPT. Expand the magazine with more of everything.

more in-depth reporting on world affairs and details regarding interesting corners of the world. you have a

world of experience in your members; use it more, drop the financial buzz

Keep up the good work!

more articles about volunteers from within bcrta members

i like the opportunity to join local branches even though I hadn't taught in the area (ie. taught in Vancouver but

joined both Vancouver and Delta so I could attend sessions closer to where i live)

Up to date pension , health issues

very satisfied!

Like: the group extended health benefits and travel insurance

staying in contact with fellow teachers

the way our group is included in seniors issues in Quesnel

guest speakers at our meetings

somewhat poorly constructed - it didn't say t not fill in when it didn't fit

Assume everybody is up to date with your outfit

Get BCPC to line up with education, not big business

You are doing a great job.

I like the fact that we have a viable, healthy organization that is not afraid to fight for its members. I don't like

the move towards getting involved in the current politics of education. We should leave that to the BCTF. I'd

like to see more attention paid to the history of education in BC and the recognition of the contributions of

BCRTA members. I am very happy with the representation we receive from BCRTA on COSCO and with

businesses and services that benefit our members I am not impressed with Green Shield Canadaand wish we

could return to Pacific Blue Cross.

Happy with the service from BCRTA

Do not read connections or use website. Enjoy the articles of PS. Do the sudoko. More group tours

I have tried to use BCRTA benefits at Staples in Kamloops. They tell me they know nothing about it

The magazine really reflects anyone or anything outside of the island or the lower mainland.

Not everyone is able to travel to other countries

How about articles about provincial or national travel.

More humour, less stuff about aging.

The editor /contributors try very hard to produce an entertaining and relevant magazine. I enjoy the puzzles,

obituaries and pension info but there are far too many travel article which are relevant only to the persons

travelling. Get more broad based stories.

Suits my needs. Thanks!

PS look forward to each issue. Good reading. Thankyou

Keep up your good work especially maintaining membership.

Keep up the good work. Much appreciated.

I like it as a way to keep in touch with what other retired educators are doing as well as the work affecting our

pensions, health care, and senior related issues.

Local branch getting better. Good COSCO workshop on driving.

Do not get connections.

I would like to see further advocacy for health care for the head ie glasses, hearing aides, dental. Reports on

how advocacy is going. Increase of limits to extended health care. Comparison of retired teachers benefits

across Canada.

Would like to have an article about what to do with mementos from school- eg/ pictures taken in the classroom

or on field trips. Are these of any use to archives of the school or to the district or should I shred these lovely

pictures?

It's nice to reminisce when reading articles from older teachers talking about their experiences or students,

teachers, parents, etc. The articles on washing clothes brought back memories. Our grand-children and

ourselves have so many modern tools to make our lives easier we ofthen forget how difficult it was for our

elders.

Thank you for all you do!!

Both my wife and I particularly enjoy receiving the PostScript magazine. It has become a constant source of

pertienent and interesting information. We also take advantage of the medical plans offered by Johnson

Not as much now as I'm over 91 and spouse 88 marrried 70 yrs June 21 2019

Information is up to date, informative, and easy to understand. Like the BCRTA just the way it is.

The magazine - wow!

Thank you to all the generous souls who worked hard to help us enjoy our retirement life.

How can we encourage newly-retired teachers to join our local branches? We are having trouble and our

luncheon meeting are experiencing a drop in attendance every month in spite of guest speakers.

More articles/information for widows/widowers who are not teachers themselves.

I appreciate the magazine and website, and the opportunity to take advantage of savings, especially for travel. I

would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities combined with travel, and language learning

opportunities abroad.

My wife and I truly appreciate all the work done by those involved in the BCRTA. We appreciate this magazine

and the website, which provides us with much information. Thank you!

added to comments on Post Script that like the Obituaries

Really love the magazine! Full of useful info.

You all do an excellent job and I feel so grateful for the work done on my behalf and all retired teachers. Thank

you.

I enjoy the Gran Pals Program with a local elementary school. I look forward to receiving Post Script. Although I

can no longer travel I enjoy reading about the travels of retired teachers. Thank you.

P.S mentioned that is renting her housing situation living in a Senior Res. Independent Living in the Lower

Mainland.

Continued sharing of deals/info. regarding health, finances, and travel.

I feel confident that the BCRTA is taking care of all my retirement needs. Thank you

socializing opportunities and discussions of important topics as above

Lives on Sunshine Coast

Cares for disabled mother

We have given up travel (both my wife and I). We are financially secure, live in Victoria and spend time with

family. We will be 80 next year but still enjoy our garden and helping our daughter farm. Life is good and we

are very fortunate. P.S. I volunteer with our local emergency program and have a number of hobbies.

I like being informed of teachers' issues by teachers.

Post Script - like

I enjoy the quarterly magazine Postscript. Our local is very active. Our local newsletter is also very informative.

We have 4 events here which I try to attend as I connect with fellow retired teachers and speakers from the

BCRTA often are on the program.

information sharing in a trusted environment

great articles

I haven't received BCRTA Connections email newsletter but would be interested in receiving it. How do I go

about doing this?

Alls good!

I would like improvement to EHB! Our plan should be better than active teachers. Instead it's worse and was

changed without any consultation with us (retirees). Not good.

As a retiree of 33 years, it keeps me in touch somewhat. Most of my colleagues are gone but I have an

extensive family 7children/8 grandchildren and 7 greats so far.

What other members are doing on their retiring time. What places have they visited? Do any of them hunt or

fly-fish? Do they go hiking? Are they over 90 like I am? Are they still active and healthy like me?

I enjoy it all. Keep up the good work!!

provides unpaid personal care for PARENT.

More travel ideas that are not cost prohibitive. The Portugal trip is affordable, whereas, the Magic of Greece is

fairly expensive. I would enjoy reading about travel destinations that are not group tours or where the

destination is at an all inclusive. Would like more flexibility.

I like to keep connected with other retired teachers and appreciate the advocacy that BCRTA provides its

members.

Informative

Topics are interesting

Some advertising and articles are helpful.

I'd like to hear more news about retired teachers - where they are - what they're doing.

I'd like to find a way to be involved with classroom teachers.

Thank you - I am now 89 years old and your magazine and support has been excellent. Interests and ability to

do things change.

Option to add common law spouse to Dental Plan without having to get married with official ceremony !!!!

My wife and I are retired school teachers (public!) We sincerely appreciate the fine advocacy role the BCRTA is

providing on our behalf. We particularly enjoy you Post Script magazine - all sections are a breath of fresh air!

Please note: Between 2013 and 2017 I had several health issues together with three changes of address (all in

the okanagan). It was in 2017 that I realized that my Dental and prescription coverage had been compromised.*

Efforts to regain coverage by contacting (letter and email) the BCRTA etc have not had results. *I was informed

More direct public advocacy for public education like Gerry Tiede's recent letter to John Horgan. As a long

retired educator I have at times despaired at the seeming insularity of the BCRTA. We are only alright when our

active colleagues and the public sector each thrive.

10 yrs ago I retired from teaching. I was a TOC for all of my teaching career because I was never a successful

candidate . . . I do not get the big pensions that my colleagues get . . . still I enjoy the magazine that BCRTA does

for retired teachers.

PostScript is a wonderful magazine that we read and re-read. My husband who was not a teacher reads it from

cover to cover and never forgets to comment what a well put together and informative magazine . As a retired

architect, he appreciates the format and content. Keep up the good work!

Love attending the local meetings connecting with former colleagues.

Continue with travel adventure and experience stories.

My local branch does only e-mail. I am dependent on your magazine for important information.

I am not the only one who does not have a computer or use the internet! Information should not be provided

only on that medium. As a person with limited mobility and several health concerns , there is little in the

magazine of interest to me.

We have a lunch meeting 3 times a year. I enjoy the speeches a to and visiting with friends. I love reading the

PostScript from cover to cover. Love the stories of teaching years ago.

I am retired 25 years and very proud to tell people I'm a retired teacher.

I enjoy stories about teachers early teaching years. Times have changed so much with cell hones etc. I think I

was lucky to teach when I did from 1961 to 1997.

Prior to retirement I thought I would be active with the Vancouver local of Retired Teachers. This has not

happened. I will look at the BCRTA website (for the first time). Public education should be just that (for all).

there is a danger of special interest groups overriding the greater good.

Baby sit grandchildren more than 30 hrs a week.

Maiden names in obits

I always look forward to the magazine. I would like to see a couple of travel articles with more of a global sense

of co-operation. Too many are wrapped up in quaint villages. teaching a few words of English

I think the health info is my favourite.

Thank your for producing a quality magazine. I always read them (JoAnn's note: but rated it as a 3 in quality)

You will notice i added Care Giver to YOUR INTERESTS. Since my husband, a retired educator had a stroke in

2016 this has been my role. I enjoy the PS - good photography. Retired 29 years.

Love the crossword

All okay thanks

would like to have "blind" email contact with members and was told it was against privacy policy.

I like Sheila Gair's articles! Like pension news/updates/changes. Enjoy latest health news for seniors. Liked the

photo contests. Also like the crossword/sudoku puzzle challenges. Travel news is interesting, too.

I would like to see detailed information and the limitations of our extended health benefits, and suggestions on

how to top up this coverage.

Group travel opportunities are also of interest.

not happy with Connections to pushing hearing aids etc. Bribes, free tests, payoffs or bonuses Executive

Director Notes: We actually don't take bribes, but do have some partnerships that pay us a small percentage

of business generated to help support our operations and keep member fees low.

I find, living in Victoria, that most of Advantage offerings are not useful, as the majority of the businesses are

not even in Victoria. As well, most of the offerings are about travel. If I'm not traveling/looking to be a tourist,

the Advantage program therefore is almost useless to me. Even the majority of articles in your magazine are

about travel expereinces of members. Offering travel benefits and articles is great, but what about the rest of

us with other needs/interests? This alone make me wonder if I should continue being a member of the BCRTA.

It's my frist year with BCRTA, and it's been a deeply disappointing experience.

Why did we drop Blue Cross Health Insurance? i miss the simplicity of dealing with them

I love reading about travel experiences and people's reflections on life experiences. Keeping people informed

about health issues is important as is pension information. I love reading about what retired teachers are doing

in their communities.

i enjoy special speakers and try to attend

Wellness is important yet the Advantage program has yet to secure deals with exercise gyms or yoga studios.

Many BCTF , non BCTF and Retired teachers would greatly benefit from reduced costs to a yoga or gym.

Research has shown that regular exercise has a positive affect on a person's well being. It is unfortunate that

this is ignored by our profession.

Like to see: Social networking fun for those not o a full pension.

I appreciate the efforts to ensure I receive my Postscript. I pay attention to changes and issues relevant to our

wide group. I don"t care for travel ads and deals which are for the very wealthy few ro those living in larger city

centres.

I am pleased after rejoining BCRTA and would like to se more statistics i.e. the average life span of a retired

teacher.

i appreciate BCRTA's Connections and Postscript although i don't often access the many options/info personally.

Thank you!

I enjoy the Postscript. My local chapter plans social events. I like knowing that the BCRTA has my interests and

welfare in mind ad will look out for me and my retired colleagues

I think information about our pensions, travel insurance and extended health insurance is quite important. Legal

issues around aging and death e.g. wills, trusts, taxes, and health representation are also important.

would love you to provide a travel opportunity where i could live/mentor/teach/integrate into community 3-6

months

Thank you for this opportunity to indicate interests.

cn Postscript be published on compostable paper or email it to us?

Appreciate the tax tips. Like travel stories. Editor's letter. Photos from members. Articles about dealing with

family issues. Always read my PostScript from cover to cover. Share with friends and if lots of relevant

information i file it. Perhaps a section with PostScript mag cover and photo in other places (a collage page) like

Zoom mag does (Sunshine Coast magazine)

Thank you for advocating for seniors.

Excellent advocacy. Wide and global appeal to members.

I appreciate receiving the "hard copy" PostScript in the mail. The magazine does not "demand" attention like an

email does. And I can take it anywhere, pass it on, or pass on bits and pieces of it in a note to a friend. What a

delight it is to receive in my mailbox!

Interest articles on hobbies and activities retirees are involved with, and clubs associations, etc. that promote

different interests would be a welcome addition. An important part of our lives is the spiritual, but this subject

is largely avoided even though it is a factor in overall health. I suggest this topic could be covered periodically.

I enjoy reading the PostScript magazine in print. Although I have a computer and use it from time to time, I find

it harder to read than printed material. I see some advantages to email communications but I prefer hearing a

person's voice, and the back and forth banter of a phone conversation. Whatever you can do to inform and act

in connection with better education (should be free) better health care (also free) better care for our

environment and for a more and intelligent and peaceful world - these things I believe we need!

Love the efforts to support all education

I can't participate in local activities as they always occur on my "Grandma" day. I don't bother with anything

much online as our internet connection is very slow - too frustrating. My 90 year old retired teacher mother

and I both look forward to PostScript.

Generally you provide a good mix of history, culture and current events, esp finance and pensions. If you ever

got an increased budget it would be great to enlist or hire somebody like the Globe and Mail's Rob Carrick who

has been advocating for the middle class in his investment columns for years.

Branch activities are just a social / work connection. I don't socialize with former colleagues - have other

interests than "lunch" and "staff room" friends who really were just work connected.

The first page I look at is the obit page. It has not changed. I hoped to see my female teacher friends but their

original surnames are not included. Could this be changed? (maiden name) I'm sure many other teachers agree.

Travel offers - healthy living - financial column - classifieds

Stories of early teachings in province. Talk about child poverty areas like Richmond and West Vancouver.

Immigrants (economic) not paying taxes.

I would like local branches to be more inclusive and attractive. Appears that lunches, bus trip etc. are sedentary.

I would like to see walks / hikes/ boating / outdoor activities.

i would like to connect with a local branch. I would like to have opportunity to share ideas and vision regarding

how public education from preschool on can be even richer and hear children's perspective on that. I would like

to know if the rights of the child is taught and implemented enough.

I like that I have full confidence in the BCRTA for advocating for retired teachers, and keeping me informed

about changes that impact my retirement. BCRTA gives me a sense of security!

Topics are relevant and timely. helps me feel connected to my colleagues/ profession after retirement.

Overall I enjoy the magazine!

re: health advocacy and what qualifies for extended health benefits: I would like to see ABM Neuromovement

therapy added to coverage( see website for Anat Baniel method of Neuromovement - based on Moshe

Feldenkreis) It uses science of neuroplasticity to help chronic pain, in addition to other problems. After months

of torturous back pain, i am walking freely. I have never checked the BCRTA website; after this survey I will

check it out.

Thank you to all the hard working individuals who keep the BCRTA thriving!

This affiliation helps keep me aware of what I should be paying attention to. It might be nice if there were

organized fitness/outdoor activities sponsored by the BCRTA and maybe I'm just not aware of them. Fairly busy

with other activities and am not a wine and cheese/small talk kind of person. How about some Philosopher

Cafes?

I look forward to reading about trips to different parts of the world and the pictures included with same trips

are amazing. I am too old to go but love to see and read about parts of the world I have never been to.

Info and tips at income tax time have been most informative and helpful.

I like the information on income tax incentives.

I would like to see:

1) information on reconciliation - ie. info about the "Beyond beads and bannock" curriculum.

2) Climate crisis - climate is always changing but we have now reached a crisis point. - i want an earth left for

our grandchildren.

Topics might include: a) How climate change may affect seniors - health issues - mobility etc.

b) electric cars vs gas. Best electric cars - charging stations.

c) products made in Canada -ie.Toilet paper from BC places

- a list of these products would be helpful.

There must be a better way than shipping oil to China; China making plastic products, then we ship our used

stuff back to china and then in some cases we take our garbage back because we cheated.

I like the personal accounts - members photos and experiences in postscripts - I never look at the website. Don't

care for the ads and the professional columns and stock photos. I would like to see some portraits and

interviews with past board members - not just obits! Where are they now? column. Kristi and Laurie 10/10

your classifieds for holiday rentals. I admire the people who volunteer for BCRTA - Thank You.

I enjoy the luncheons, the PostScript Magazine, seeing people I taught with is important.

I would like to see more information about branch activities in provincial publications.

Help locals develop their websites, or provide support to the process. Thanks to those who volunteer for

executive and director positions, and to the editorial staff of PostScript, you are all amazing!!!

Please stop using shiny paper for your magazine.

Obviously I am out of the loop on the "techie" things. Are there any opportunities for some assistance with my

lack of competence?

I like knowing that you are available. And I greatly appreciate knowing you are advocating for pension security. I

can relax and enjoy retirement. (Actually, I've gone back to full-time teaching but in an independent school this

time. Might only be for a couple of years but it's reassuring to know your resources are available when I retire

for the second time.)

Since I am 95 and have been retired since 1974 I've had ample time to know what the BCRTA has done for me

and others over the many years - THANK YOU to all who have served us.

I prefer having a magazine mailed. I do not like having the magazine emailed, but I realize that is a cheaper

option.

BCRTA is positive and comprehensive - thank you!

You do a good job!

My husband and I are very frustrated that we have been switched to Green Shield as it does not cover either of

replacement creams, staxyn or any of the drugs for post-prostectamy functioning.

The Postscript is an excellend publication. i read it from cover to cover.

Thanks for all the work you do.

been very satisfied with the BCRTA

Please: Change the name of the magazine. It's very 1950s. Soon, no one will know what a postscript is, and it's

depressing in its finality, and the definition as a last minute "add on". Develop much better Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram presence. Address concerns of retired teachers serving as school trustees and help them connect.

Assist Branches with not ignoring political activism. Help Branches with surveys of what members would like as

activities - fewer boring golf club "luncheons" with not so engaging musicians and more support for

developing book club discussion groups, outdoor activities - walking groups, camping. Connect Branches via

social media. Remember Educators B&B? Revive that locally?

I like maintaining a connection with others who have shared my career and have similar interests to me. I also

value the initiatives that are associated with being part of a larger group. I look forward to receiving Postscript.

Note: caring for a parent was not a choice

more on financial strategies, health care initiatives to improve costs

I would like to see our own extended health plan

Continue to offer Free Membership to encourage "sign-ups".

Instigating and taking an active role re: petitions for matters important to seniors...universal pharmacare,

pension stability, healthcare reform etc. More information on where our pension plan has its investments

(recent disclosure that OPP had a small investment in privatized U.S. prisons!). Tips and advice on grand

parenting, estate planning etc.

Enjoy hearing of others, current social issues, support for continued pensions, do like luncheons but usually on a

day I have a regular event.

More affirmative action. We are non-partisan, but don't have to be inactive.

Keep up the great work!

Nothing. BCRTA is doing a terrific job for the retired teachers of BC.

An expanded list of businesses that will provide substantial discounts to retired members.

I appreciate the advocacy on behalf of our pensions and our health care. I also enjoy all the travel options and

other services available at reduced costs to retired teachers.

As a committee member who receives the minutes of the Directors ‘ meetings, I find them to be quite

uninformative,, especially in notations such as “ so and so spoke to his or her written or oral report “. A

sentence or two at least would provide information about the concerns and actions discussed at the Board

table. Or are these reports available from the office upon request?

Yo do a good job...thank you.

In your advantage program, I would like to see more offers relevant to rural people.

I enjoy staying in touch with my former colleagues. It is always great to visit and reconnect.

Right now I feel I have not had enough experience with BCRTA events or offers to make an educated and

informed comment.

I like to keep informed. Particularly with health and travel insurance and pension issues. I feel connected with

my retired colleagues through BCRTA and feel more assured that BCRTA is looking out for our interests.

Postscript nagazine

I have no offering. Regarding BCRTA post I check the obituary for Sooke teachers.

Supplemental health insurance with fewer limitations - since the current plan with GreenShield, has way too

many.

I have only been retired since a year and I continue to teach as a TOC about twice a week so I have not really

been able to look into all what BCRTA offers. This survey is a reminder of all your services which are of interest

to me. Also, I used to teach in North Vancouver but live in Vancouver. I am not getting news from any of these

branches. Thank you.

funny stories about school life and teaching

Pensions and health care are the most important things to me. A lot of the other things I can do myself.

I do not have more to add.

Good insurance benefits for travel

Special offers/discounts. Would like to see offers for single travel

I am happy with the BCRTA and its support for retired teachers. I am on the board of the SRTA.

The magazine keeps me informed about financial and social events helpful to retired teachers.

Helping to eliminate school boards and using the $$$$ for Special Education

Please re-enroll us in Blue Cross. Benefits/lack of coverage with Green Shield is causing hardship (Eg.

"extended" dental not good enough; physiotherapy treatment visit allowance is inadequate for some

conditions). Blue Cross improved after we and others pulled out. Unsatisfactory - more denials of needed

services with Green Shield.

BCRTA provides a good balance of information.

Keep up the advocacy - youngsters in teaching will thank us later.

I appreciate the work of the BCRTA, as advocates and retirement mentors.

It's an organization based on a larger system that is still living in the past with little or no understanding of the

complexity of learning. I had brief hopes in the late 1970's but traditionalism won out.

-- On the "personal care to" question of this survey, you didn't give the choice of "parents". That is what I have

spent half of my time during the first 1 1/2 yr of my retirement doing (caring for my parents). In talking to

friends & former colleagues, I hear that I am not the only one!

-- I appreciate the opportunity to gather with & maintain contacts with former colleagues. I am now cross

country skiing (in winter) or walking (the rest of the year) once a week with another teacher who retired at the

same time as I did. That way we get outside, stay in shape, and visit at the same time. This connection was

made at a meeting of our BCRTA local chapter when I mentioned that I was looking for a ski partner & she said

she would like to get back to the cross country skiing she had done when her children were growing up but

hadn't had time to pursue it in recent years while teaching full time.

All good

Keep doing what you're doing!

A comparison as to extended health plans

The leadership it takes in representing us, its involvement in current issues and challenges in the political arena

and its support of local branches with their challenges. I like coming to the annual conference as a

representative and find it very educational.

Protection of class sizes and a voice to encourage counselling at the elementary level.

Comprehensive services for retired educators and networking with seniors' organizations across Canada are

major BCRTA strengths.

I have been extremely impressed with the Johnson EHC/Travel agents, they have been helpful in explaining the

differences between the Medoc and Prestige plans.

Information about better and effective use of the many Social Media platforms

I don't know where to find out about our local RTA.

I like being connected to my former colleagues and I want to see opportunities to travel that are affordable.

Pension information and support, government lobbying

I appreciate the mentorship that BCRTA offers me, whether I participate, or not.

A support system when help is needed

I like the fact that you are surveying your membership to keep current with our needs and wishes. Overall, I

like knowing that I have a solid organization behind me in retirement. Thanks!

The Advantage offers - although there may be many- are mostly with obscure companies or not with the most

popular. Cloverdale paints is only one I have ever used. Eg a more expensive rental company with a discount is

worse than a cheaper company. Lots of examples of this. Rexall drugs is not around, etc why not try to get deals

with more popular companies? Bit ofmisadvertising, I feel.

Classes for computer and other technologies

I think the BCRTA is doing an excellent job. I do not attend my local association meetings but was not able to

explain why in the survey. I live in Vancouver but taught in Surrey and the meetings are held in south Surrey and

it is just too long a drive unfortunately. It would be nice to see former colleagues so maybe I will make the

effort if I am not needed for babysitting! 😉

I would like to read stories on retirees both inspiring and challenging. How people are dealing with significant

challenges in life.

I also want new retirees to join the BCRTA.... how to get more new people to join.

How other retirees are using their time (activities, volunteer etc.). If single, how/where to travel safely.

Consistent information about how our teachers' pension are being safeguarded.

I think you are doing a great job!! if I did not travel so much i would become actively involved. Perhaps later.

Thanks

You asked about personal care assistance, but did not include other family members/siblings. I think that is

important.

Can't think of anything more. You're doing a great job!

So far (retired 6 months) I like reading the Postscript Magazine. I would like to see more travel opportunities

Keep up the great work! Maybe create an online registration format for future members???

Current info on education

I feel I belong to a group of very special people

Please note that the question re. providing care for others should include our aging parents. I assist my mother

4 to 5 hours per week, and am on call at a moment's notice.

Thank you for your good work

I would like BCRTA meetings to be open to all who wish to attend that belong to the organization. My local

association is not really my association, but the closest neighbouring one that is organized. Retired teachers

from my district are spread out in several small, widely spaced communities.

You are doing a good job

would like to see some social events for our own local (SORTA)

More support for Early Learning and Childcare

A concerted effort to have a qualified staff and the establishment Bachelor of Early Childhood Education !

interest in johnson advocacy

Advantage partners and travel opportunities that are of use to those of us who are "beyond Hope."

Opportunities for continuing education; strong continual advocacy for the environment.

More political, like BCTF

I wish TheBCRTA had more members so as a group we had a strong voice & able to get discounts etc. All

teachers belong to BCTF, should all retirees belong to BCRTA, since they get the benefits such as Medoc etc.

Connecting with colleagues regularly.

Nothing to add at this time

BCRTA does great work keeping retired teachers connected with others and providing information on

stimulating travel opportunities as well as continuing education on financial and health affairs. Just an FYI...In

this survey, you might have added "parent" to the options for those of us who spend considerable "volunteer

caregiver" time looking after aged seniors. Some retired teachers, i.e. those of us in our sixties may still have

parents to whom we are devoting time and may not yet have grandchildren as many of our children are having

families later.

Appreciative of the work being done on behalf of retired teachers and the important work of advocating for

public education -so very important

I think your organization is doing a great job and I LOVE the Postscript magazine

A list of NGOs that we might offer our time to in Mexico or other countries.

I like to be informed about seniors current issues. I care that BCRTA provides me with trustworthy info. Keep up

the good work.

Caregiving question omitted Parental care.

I appreciate the advocacy of issues for seniors, Medoc insurance and EHC.

The fact that BCRTA is active in a variety of areas to provide information and express the concern of memebers

Re survey: no place for "no response" (eg did not know there was a website) gave those things 3s. What about

care giving for a parent?

***I like & care about pension advocacy. I know you have worked hard on it. I wish BCRTA would do more

public education advocacy. Loved G.Tiede's recent letter! People would listen if we talked about education. I

stopped going to Burnaby meetings because people didn't seem interested in public education advocacy "too

political" (probably because too many retired principals).

PS Do you send me an email newsletter? Don't recall seeing one.

I don't have anything more to add.

Keep up the good work and keep us informed. I appreciate you

The variety and range of topics covered in publications. Also easy access to contacts.

Postscript is excellent. More Advantage partners for home maintenance, vehicles, exercise programs for

seniors. Advocacy for services for aging in place (home). Advocacy for a national pharmacare program and for

maintaining/ensuring defined benefit pensions excellent. Advice and assistance to members through office

staff is outstanding.

More focus on education advocacy and health not on bcrta partners

Unpaid personal care to parents was not listed as an option to select...it shoud be. I cared for a parent for 5

years part time pre retirement and 2 years full time post retirement

I like the magazine articles and info, our no bell brunch at the beginning of September, it's advocacy. I would

like to see us being far more active in environmental activities, information and to let members know how to

invest in companies that are environmentally positive. The environment is the most important issue for all

mankind.

Up to date information, advocacy for retirement topics of finances, taxes, health care and activities. Grateful

for those who work for the association, in all their fields, for us retired. It is comforting and reassuring.

I have appreciated tax information

Social interactions and sharing of information.

I think the BCRTA is doing a great job. Thank you.

You are doing a great job. I like it all.

I would love to know the annual date of membership renewal as I am never sure when to do it.

The degree of support that colleagues give to each other and the fact that we still function as a cohesive

forceful group.

To be connected with former colleagues and other like-minded people.

I enjoy hearing the speakers that attend our luncheons and catching up with my former colleagues.

Communication re varied topics

I think the BCRTA is doing a great job. Perhaps it could do more about environmental issues.

Thank you for being an advocate for us and many of our concerns!

Topical issues re environment, climate change, recycling, politics, educational research, new initiatives in bc

education.

More information regarding "volunteer" oriented travel opportunities.

Like the volunteer opportunities explained, encouraged, how to get involved

I would like to be more involved, but I seldom meet anyone I know at the lunches. I am almost 90, so perhaps

this is not surprising. Maybe in the next world

I like the political power BCRTA has to advocate and inform.

There isn't a local retired teacher's chapter in my town so it's nice to have such good communication at the

provincial level.

BCRTA and BCTF getting involved to support teachers now that assaults upon teachers by students are on the

One of the best moves our local has done was to vote for cost of living option over the medical plan costs. We

welfare. I couldn't answer some questions because I choose not to have a computer. (Last of the dinosaurs!)

I like to read about my retired colleagues and how they are faring. I would like to read more stories about

teachers' beginning years and experiences.

Living in the North and in a comparatively small community, I find that deals made available through the

Advantage program rarely apply here. Many of the retailers or other sources simply are not here. True, I could

seek them out when traveling to the Lower Mainland, but I don't generally use travel for commercial reasons.

I enjoy the magazine, especially the crossword puzzles. I like to see what other retirees are doing and keep up

with the pension and health info.

Good diversity of articles. Always something to read of interest. Enjoy reading it.

BCRTA Survey 2019 Comments 16 of 32

Page 62: MEMBER SURVEY 2019 - BCRTA · Just bought 6 books by Chris Harko, Harko Polo. They were advertised in Post Script last issue. A great read, especially for an Indeavour(sic). Loved

I like the articles that provide information on things that may not be common knowledge, e.g., the current

article on tax credits when supporting a person with disabilities. I like the advocacy of a strong association with

lots of member support - for all issues of concern - a group that will support my/our needs and those of the

next generation.

Specifics with travel articles: planning, getting there...

I did not appreciate receiving mailings from businesses like "Hearing". where it was obvious that the BCRTA had

shared my contact information. i took advantage of your offer to be removed from the list! I got a very quick

response. I don't belong to BCRTA to be promoted to by businesses, insurance or travel. I have found the

PostScript a great magazine and look forward to receiving it. Seems like there are more commercial ads.

Executive Director Notes: We have been working to correct the misperception that we share member data

with anyone. WE DO NOT. For some partners, we facilitate a mailing to our members. The advertiser pays all

the costs but does not see the list. Then members can choose to contact the Advantage Partner and identify

themselves. If members do not wish to receive any promotional mailings (email or print) they can simply

contact the BCRTA office and ask to be removed for the promotions list.

I look forward to the PostScript Magazine. I read it from cover to cover. The information in the articles is

interesting and thought-provoking. The puzzles are my favourite and usually I can complete both sets. Thank

you for all of you hard work and dedication in producing such a great publication.

I am legally blind so am challenged in many ways. I do have audio books... Frequently ask for help with small

things hence the facility I live in but it's costly. Have to get someone to give up a day to have eye appt in

Cranbrook. Do have reading equipment but it's a nuisance. Have no close relatives. It takes many hours to read

PostScript so often don't. Enjoy the photos.

I appreciate the obituaries since I'm originally from Northern BC but have little contact with any teachers. I like

doing the puzzles but wish they could be entered electronically.

I'm always please when computer-related workshops or Gerry's retirement-related workshops are presented

for retirees to attend - always worthwhile. Not far to drive for these workshops.

I read PostScript and appreciate that BCRTA is covering our backs against the targeted pension advocates.

extensive notes - see submitted form

Useful / good / thoughtful planning. I enjoy the membership. Keep up the good work!

We had a wonderful District (Trail) president in Grace DeBlasio - she is greatly missed. We need another equally

faithful one.

Bill C-27 - keep on advocating for us - and sign (illegible) petitions!

Green Shield seems okay but Pacific Blue Cross was better - in that my spouse's essential creams are not

covered by GS because only 1 ingredient in each of 3 is not covered so the whole is not! :(

I live in Sask. and this is my only connection with BC education.

I am a young 65 but my marriage of 35 years ended recently. I have a wealth of friends but they are all married

couples. I would like to find a new partner, however, online dating has many risks. To me, the BCRTA could

facilitate some kind of social events for like-minded people. Meet-up groups seem to be heavily weighted on

the female side and perhaps the BCRTA is as well. Surprising to me is that I have come up against some

potential partners who are anti-teacher. I never knew there was so much negativity toward teachers out there!

My local RTA does not have dynamic leadership and is floundering, not appealing to younger retirees. Our

social lives are so important to our ongoing health and I think the BCRTA could help out in that aspect too.

Interesting that the British government has created a ministry to combat loneliness.

MANY retired teachers have health issues. I'd like to see personal stories about resiliency, coping & what

members' address healthy living-challenges. I would like to see a tremendous push on retired teachers

extended health benefits. Statistics show that as we age, our health care needs increase. Our health insurance

should be adequate to address these increased needs. My retired teacher friends say Greenshield is a very poor

insurance provider. I'd like to see more personal stories - surveys to help new retirees decide between the two

programs (Greenshield vs. Johnson). I'd also like to learn more about the committee on extended benefits &

pensions work.

More articles about the advantages being a member: Advantage program, travel opportunities, the Johnson

Heath/travel coverage options

PostScript is excellent- I read all the content.

Lunch (without meeting)

Like the personal travel articles of retired members. Advice on finances, taxes.

I like all the articles about other countries.

Never been a joiner, but on retirement realized I would rarely if ever see former colleagues and friends- glad I

joined. Keep up the advocacy work against C-27, for Pharmacare, and affiliation with COSCO

As a new member I don't know what my expectations should be at the local or provincial level. Any information

would be of interest.

I do enjoy meeting my retired colleagues regularly. On this kind of survey you need a N/A box - I don't use any

of the electronic "stuff" i.e. e-newsletter or website

I love getting the Magazine to read! Thank you!

I enjoy the information in Postscript and look forward to receiving each edition

Keep doing what your are doing

Enjoy the publications - of both provincial and local associations. I did not know about connections!

Really like the variety of info in PostScript! Keep up the great publication!

Continued advocacy for the best value with regard to dental and extended medical coverage, and out-of-

country travel

I like what you are doing.

Do you put addresses of local chapters somewhere

Personal stories

I would like to see more coverage of the changes in the public school system, both positive and negative

I enjoy reading Postscript

I simply appreciate being informed in many spheres. I certainly enjoy reading personal experience accounts.

Always enjoy any travelogues.Love historical articles of past events and experiences. Always check the obits to

see who has left this earth. Often wonder when will mine appear. Thanks so much for all the hard working

staff and volunteers

Keep up the good work. Thank you to to those who take on, sometimes, thankless , official roles in BCRTA

I think you're doing an excellent job. Keep up the good work.

Keep up the good work!

I am not sure how the Advantage service works

Enjoy the articles - Travel

I enjoy career stories, member's photos, personal experience stories and poems, opinions expressed in 500

words (i.e. short)

I appreciate being supported with concerns and questions. I have both in my reading and through phone

contact when needed.

I like learning about the big political issues that could affect us, such as Bill C-27. Thank you for all you do to

protect our interests.

I like feeling connected to other retired teachers through my local association and I like being a part of the

BCRTA. Thank you for all that you do and thanks for asking for our individual input

I would like more details about committee details sent to locals

I like the bursaries for young teachers. really appreciate the magazine. I have found anyone I have contacted to

be fantastic!

Travel groups for seniors - a list of opportunities for singles.

PostScript magazine is enjoyable to read, thank you.

Volunteer opportunities - a list of these in various communities for locals or possibly visiting volunteer

opportunities.

Political discussions especially with the pending Federal election in PostScript.

More about what individual committees do

I enjoy and look forward to getting PostScript. The articles particularly the travel ones are great. The crosswords

and sudokus are fun to do. Please keep them coming. thank you KS. (note: this person provides unpaid

personal care to a parent, which was not an option but was added by the survey respondent.)

Finding that my colleagues have similar concerns as we age.

I look forward to the magazine and have shared it with other retirees, particularly articles on taxes.

Only been a member for a year so haven't taken advantage of many offers -- but hope to use travel advantage

sometime. I love this magazine --(sure beats the nonsense in many magazines that I've read -- particularly all

the advertising!) PostScript is relevant, varied and interesting -- like the lay out, quality of pater, etc. Well

done!!!)

Really need to advocated for more health care. I am 69 and don't have a doctor. Waiting a year to see a

specialist is insane.

Keep up the fine work.

They was the first time I've enjoyed there PostScript. Prefer online to save paper and postage. I work in our

business so not truly rtired but still interested in PostScript.

I usually read every article in any mail from BCRTA Enjoy that it is well rounding in public, personal, health

initiatives, and financial info.

My wife is "in care" with Parkinson0like symptoms , likely demential with lewy bodies. I visit her every day and

take her out for a drive and coffee. It is very difficult watching her deteriorate. She was a career teacher and

we travelled a lot until 2015. Our family (1 son and 2 daughters) have been very helpful.

continue your constant efforts to encourarage members to belong and stay in touch with bcrta and retiree

issues.

I would like the BCRTA take a more political stance in the area of Canada's role in the world. I do not support

supplying troops, lethal force and federal leaders like Trudeau and Feidland advocating overthrowing of

governments like in south America . If we support conservation and are against global warming then we should

be taking a political stance against war. Wars are what is destroying the worlds health and environment.

Are local and provincial minutes from meetings/conferences available? I cannot find them on either website.

I have not been very happy about Green Shield coverage although I opted for Extended Health for my husband

and I. I am wondering why we switched from Pacific Blue Cross and whether it was better for retired teachers

(the year I retired was when the switch was made). Though I have Extended, I believe I cannot opt out now

should I so desire. Thank you for asking.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I have been retired for 25 years from a career of 35!/2 teaching, volunteered at our hospital for 7 -8 years, since

nursed an ill husband for 4 years, for 5 years now ale with great grandchildren and stay connected with

colleagues. PostScript keeps me in touch in many ways, and many thanks for that.

Keep up the good work

I enjoy the articles, travel opportunities, financial and insurance advise. Also the classified is interesting and

knowing who has left us. I am out of the country six months so would prefer an online copy or through my

email. Keep up the good work. You are appreciated 😊

Enjoy PostScript

A new branch opened this past year in the Comox Valley. We appreciate their updates and the opportunity to

socialize with former colleagues.

Many of us would be willing to volunteer in schools. This might be easier if retirement associations formed

volunteer leaders who could make contact with public schools and help establish volunteer programs

Branch? In Kamloops -- any branch? If so, I don't know about it.

how to shorten wait times for medical services, Volunteer overseas info

I think you're doing a super job! Thanks.

Postscript always keeps me up to date on pensions, insurance, and travel options. the retirees who share their

efforts in many other ways are wonderful - especially for those of us who have been there done that and would

love to go!

We are fortunate to have an organization keeping us informed. Thankyou to all who put in the time and energy.

I appreciate that the BCRTA is active on issues of importance to its members, seniors and all Canadians

whatever their age and ethnicity.

I am happy to see that you don't use plastic sleeves for your magazine

I get the AB Retired Teacher Newsletter and magazine. BC is far superior. I really look forward to them and

read them from cover to cover.

Johnson poor Helath company :

1. I wait until Jan to put n all p;;tedious year's extended health claims. but they apparently cannot make my tax

receipt reflected the calendar year of taxation e.g. Jan 2018 would have been 2017 receipts but reported as

2018 . So I have to recalculate myself.

2. There have been many errors and omissions in claims which I have to print out.

3. Many times, Johnson doesn't pay my co-payment or pharmacy so I send in the receipt for payment.

4. In AG, Seniors Plan pays for the first 70% . For years Johnson paid the remaining 30% as lucky the in BC have

to pay 80%!! However, they have last year decided to pay only 80% of the remaining 30% plus as apply drugs

AB covers but not BC they often pay 0. Yet I pay the same fees as Bc retirees. Is this okay?

II am pleased that we are working towards keeping our pensions where they are which is due to our hard

working pension advocates. I thank our pension reps.

So good to see you Gerry as president. Thanks for all that you do!

Thank you for a well thought out and well composed survey. Even the postage paid envelope was a good way of

encouraging participation.

I like that the BCRTA provides me with information (health/wellness), travel articles the move my imagination

and th feeling of being a member of a very large group of people albeit often vicariously. Thank you for all the

work you do to enhance my world of knowledge.

To continue to develop and provide more services to members

I appreciate the work done by all involved to keep retired teachers informed and connected . PostScript is

excellent.

As the spouse of a deceased member I do follow the BCRTA and read the magazine with interest. Reliable

advertising and travel news. I also like occasional recipes for one person and book information.

Doing great! Good idea having a survey.

Need more opposition to Bill C-27. A good start so far.

I like the insurance/tax information given every year.

Probably great website but at age 90 I have my Accountant daughter manage my computer. I support my 60

year old brain damaged son.

Thank goodness we have such an educated organization, especially with changing times bringing us more

immigrants who we can gently conform to Canadian ways. What ever happened to "when in Rome do as the

Romans do."

An extremely important organization. It offers activities for people who want to get involved, support services,

personal responses and relevant information on current topics.

Thank you for your work. I enjoy reading about volunteer experiences/activities.

keep up the good work

I like receiving the magazine and emails. Not sure how anything could be improved upon as I can get all the info

I need. The BCRTA is a great organization! Thank you!

I like the magazine, particularly travel stories as my husband and I are frequent travellers. It is nice to be kept

up to date with education, pensions, health care, etc. My only complaint regarding retirement is that I have

very seldom been informed of a meeting, luncheon, etc. by my local association. I have been a paid up member

ever since I retired. It may be because my surname is Smith - stranger things have happened.

I was very interested in the "Longstay" group travel offers in this latest mag issue.

I am extremely interested in hearing from past colleagues and reading this excellent magazine. Being an active

volunteer on tourism and water improvement board. I appreciate the quality we seniors contribute to our

communities. Keep up the great work.

The BCRTA is doing fine work- thank you. I have developed other interests since retiring but general facets of

education continue to over-ride everything from environment to government to creative pursuits.

The new format and text font and variety of articles in Postscript are wonderful. I read it cover to cover.

Carry on with advocacy specifically for RTA people which concurrently supports all senior people by bringing

issues to government and other decision makers.

I hope my answers are helpful. I have been traveling and have had company so now I am at the computer to

complete this survey. Perhaps sending it in the autumn or winter would have captured more responses.

I would like to see the BCRTA divest my pension funds from investments that incur environmental damage, ei,

climate change, and develop investment in "green" initiatives. This is very important. We need leadership.

Why do you assume that everyone has a cell phone and a computer/website. I refuse to give up

personal/financial information- I don't want to be hacked or scammed. My personal life is private. Have been

on 6 continents plus 88 countries. I am also single and a home owner with no mortgage or debts. PS I also read

your magazine from 1st to last page and look forward to receiving it. It keeps me up to date on BC education

policy so I can answer questions intelligently to my friends AND vote properly.

I enjoy the PostScript. I really enjoy reading about past teaching experience and holidays people take.

Really enjoy the crosswords, sudoko and personal glimpses into staff. Insight into travel opportunities, home

exchanges, B & B opportunities, . As silly as it sounds: some basic information on 1. simple house repairs and 2.

simple mechanical repairs.

(JoAnn's note: This person would like to speak with someone about the website.

Also PostScript articles on rentals and accommodation exchange.

Also a comment about the desire to respond to the BCRTA Connections.

Respondent also wishes for the BCRTA to include in its work these issues: Senior Education, computer issues,

technology, learning new languages. -- end of JoAnn's note)

I work as a school trustee and would like to see much more info about what is happening in public education.

Having said that, I am constantly surprised by Retired Teachers' lack of interest in education and lack of passion

for kids.

More presence of BCRTA executives to our area (Trail-Castlegar)

Has there ever been a feature on the self-guided Circle Farm Tours? It would be neat to have a member follow

one or two of them and comment. Nice to have some local travel for those of us who don't venture to exotic

places...

Through Postscript in 2016 I was able to connect with the BCRTA branch in Victoria. I moved from Squamish

and an exec. member of LVIRT called me to join the Wed. Walkers and before you knew it I was on the

Executive of LVIRT. Thank you !

Keep up the good work!

Please advocate for a national pharmacy program (which you are doing now!) and keep our pension as is - I

know the gov. is trying to change this.

Although not contacted recently, people in the BCRTA office have been helpful and upbeat. PostScript is much

appreciated.

I love Sheila Gair's column! Not only does she write about interesting subjects, she writes so well. Thank you.

(This person wrote the word "some" beside the Neighbours box in Lifestyle without checking the box.)

Since I now have my own business as an artist I have little time to keep up with the BCRTA. I read your

information when and if I have the time. I appreciate you being there in case I do need information!

If you wish to view my work my online site is tomantilart.com.

(This person filled in the box Not Important beside Health Information in section Your Association. Beside that

he/she wrote "While I read it, I get main personal info from Mayo Clinic and Berkley health emails and

Keep up the good work!

Offer/Organize meet up groups related to my interests

About 70% of this issue is advertising.

Thank you!!

Articles regarding- caring for elderly parents; - Interior Health System for assessments, etc. for elders; -

Advocacy for seniors needing assistance

Very helpful staff, once I was able to connect/contact them.

I'm busy with other interests and volunteering - Birding and a Bloedel Conservatory Docent. I hope to still get

Post Script by mail as I've dropped Social Media and want to spend less time in front of a screen.

It is good to get receive the monthly publication.

Excellent magazine - interesting reading. I always do the Sodokus!

I particularly like the opportunity to choose Johnson Insurance. We have used the travel insurance to make a

claim once with no problems.

A doctor in Mexico was at our hotel room within half an hour and stayed with us over an hour!

I would like the BCRTA at the local level to become more involved in advocacy on community issues: health

care, climate change, provincial politics. Some want a social gathering. I won't be there, I have other venues

for gossiping about the past and tut tutting about the future. Provincially, the BCRTA is way ahead of its

branches, certainly mine which is really a social club of a few retires who taught here back in the day.

Keep up the great work!

I live in Vancouver, but retired from SD 36, so I rarely get to participate in the activities of my former local. Is

there a reciprocal arrangement between locals that allow BCRTA members to attend events closer to the local

where they live?

I would like to see us, as an organization, speaking up for teachers, public education, and backing up the BCTF.

Staying connected

Better crosswords, not a lot of BCTF clues

I am happy in my retirement.

I do not find the PostScript at all stimulating.

Great value for low membership fee. Advocacy for seniors issues and cooperation with other seniors groups.

I'm 95 - just lucky to still be alive

hard work of all the BCRTA members who work hard for the rest of us. Thank you! Maryann Emery

The BCRTA is doing a good job in informing it's members on topics of interest

I think you could do a better job. The glossy magazine without in-depth content, in my mind, is useless waste of

funds.

I like keeping abreast of what is happening with other retirees and in the field of ducation.

Magazine - I always check the classified page and appreciate the many opportunities offered. I also read the

material on financial matters and pension issues.

This organization is a valuable advocacy for retired teachers. Keep up the good work.

I like to know that you're there to help and answer any questions I may have. I've always had a quick and

professional answers in the past. The post script magazine is also full of info that I might need. Thank you.

Special offers such as travel medical insurance; Info about pensions, healthcare, etc.; Advocacy

I appreciate the work done by younger colleagues.

Advocate for lower cost Shingrix vaccine.

I enjoy reading Post Script magazine.

I enjoy the connection with colleagues and hearing how others are spending their retirement. Also the travel

ideas.

Like to see - You or someone you contact/contract to expose the worst side of capitalism...the housing fiasco!

Adequate housing like clean air should be a right for ALL! The social harm caused by the cost of housing is

HUGE!! Expose what's happening- who's benefiting, etc. Housing should not be a commodity like "gold" is.

Keep up the excellent work!

My teaching career was in Delta but I now live in the South Cariboo. It's difficult to attend RDTA (DRTA?)

meetings. I do miss having contact with colleagues but is it possible to join a Retired Teachers Association in

100 Mile House? The issue of monthly dental caost is a serious one. It's much too expensive. I do not

subscribe because the cost. Fortunately my husband's dental is included in his medical covering 80% of costs.

The rate is reasonable, too.

We need to gain control of our Health/Dental benefits. Greenshield has been a huge disappointment.

On the envelope wrote Loved Ladakh: Beacon at the top of the world - my favourite article to date!

I'd like to know what investments the BCRTA holds. Are the investments 'green" or are we supporting fossil

fuels, etc.?

I really enjoy Post Script (and so does my husband) I like the up-to-date information we receive on pensions,

finances, health. Good speakers always when they come to our local.

I enjoy reading stories from other retired tchrs from around the province, especially in remote regions.

I access info only through "Post Script" - don't spend much time on the computer thus don't use the

"connections" or BCRTA website. Print is my favourite medium!

I left some questions out as I did not get a not applicable choice.

I like that the BCRTA is made up of so many dedicated volunteers who are all working so diligently for the

welfare of retired teachers and seniors, in general. I trust their judgement and motives when it comes to

seeking improvements for retired BC teachers.

Even at the age of 93, I just enjoy your booklet that appears in our postbox. Thank you for the care you take in

assembling the magazine.

Thank you for asking. I'd like more emphasis on how to respond to ageism as well as advocacy to eliminate

ageism. Carl Honore's excellent book "Bolder: Making the Most of Our Longer LIves" is an excellent resource

for BCRTA members.

1. They switched our PBCI plan to GSC. Stupid! Stupid! Premiums are now higher ($2400 per year), deductible

not higher - $200! from $50!! No ortho coverage for my custodial grandkids.

2. Our raise last year was too low - 1.6% - what a joke! My house taxes in Ladys went up 20%. Gas cost went

up 20% or more!! Water bill - up! My dis - up! Far more than 1.6%. And you guys know how much food costs

went up!

Since I do not have a computer I hope you will continue to send Post Script.

I certainly appreciate the hard work done by the members of the executive!

You are doing a great job...keep doing what you are doing.

I am happy to read it from cover to cover and enjoy every item. Thank you to all of the retired teachers who

continue to keep up this wonderful magazine called "Post Script"!!

Get in touch with retired colleagues.

You listen, provide good resources and information, keep learning fun and connect us all. Please continue with

the hands-on Postscript and remember that some of us do not have technological devices soldered to our

bodies. Thanks for all that you are doing, including this survey. (smiley face icon, handwritten).

Like the travel deals + info + stories; Financial info is great; Reminders of what I need to do.

Anything political that is important. Green Shield does not cover what Blue Cross did.

I love Postscripts. I appreciate financial articles and would like a column for questions on personal financial

situations. With costs going up, benefits having to be paid for out of pension income, it's hard to get ahead to

save for travel and fun stuff especially when not on full pension due to loss of work years and staying home

with children to raise.

Love the magazine articles. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy the travel articles.

As a 98 year old with limited mobility I find the publication a fund of info on my profession. My partner who

worked in another profession says she wished her association had something similar.

I have not been active in BCRTA because I spent 6 months of every year in Mexico since retirement. I was

always active before retirement and strongly support both the principles and the people. I need print, not

electronic, communications. The photos acoompanying articles are great! Perhaps BCRTA could be more

political.

More communication re Offers and Benefits on Local - Day trips.

Our local area did not have a group for most of my retirement so far---I think they are important. I think the fee

is too high for people who do not have a local group.

Be sure our pensions STAY DEFINED and keep COLA clause for as long as possible (I have a son who is a teacher

now)

I must say, I am no very involved with BCRTA, but probably will in later years. I do, very much, enjoy receiving

Post Script. The travel articles are fantastic. I like the crossword, too.

History - what some teachers went through at the beginning of their careers.

Health articles - How to look after yourself

Scam - keep us posted

Animal stories or pictures

Keep up the good work.

Since I didn't know about the website or E-Newsletter my answers to #8, 9, 10, 11 irrelevant. #20 and 21 need

more definite descriptions.

BCRTA does a wonderful and much appreciated service for retirees.! Thank you!

I appreciated the Summer 2019 "Healthy Living" Column by Dr. R. Wong. Many retired teachers are living with

chronic illness and need columns that pertain to them (as all the exciting travel columns may not be an option).

An inspiring column about persons living a good life as they deal with a chronic health issue would be

appreciated. Thank you.

It is comforting to know that BCRTA is there, advocating for us. This is especially important for those of us who

live in small, isolated communities.

Overall health information including vitamins, supplements and alternative medicine

Thank you for all you DO.

Keep up advocating for better education with smaller class size and more people to do psych-ed testing (more

children need to be tested and diagnosed so they do not fall "through the cracks" (personal experience for the

latter).

I like the

-updates on finance and pensions

-updates on health info

-meeting retired colleagues

Keep up the good work. Thanks for the volunteer time.

I like the PostScript magazine. I like the connection to the BCTF.

As someone whose extended medical and dental coverage is covered by my spouse's better plan, I am not

interested in reading abut that, but definitely acknowledge it is of great importance to those in the plans. I am

not a traveler, so offers don't interest me, but I do enjoy reading about others travel.

(JoAnn's note: provides care to a parent)

I love the personal stories of past experiences.

Travel to interesting places (unusual).

Any new health news.

I enjoy what you have already.

You are already doing a great job -- keep it up.

I like to get your magazine and hear all about BCRTA News.

I really appreciate the BCRTA's communications and especially the concentration on our pensions. I have always

found the BCRTA staff to be friendly, helpful and always pleasant to work with.

I was theCVDTA's bargaining chair which led to the strike and then the great settlement. The was before

Christie Clark of course. The whole process really created closeness amongst the BCTF membership. Since that

time, those new to teaching after that time have not seemed to bond in the way we did.

What I would like to see is a way to recreate the loyalty, the prinde and togetherness of teachers the we

retirees have. I am not advocating that there should be a another strike, but todays teachers need a strong

reason to be proud teachers and feel strongly supported by the BCTF. I feel the answer must lay in the

leadership of the BCTF who will show, probably through the media and visits to local district meetings, that

teachers are very important in todays society. Repeated media ads stating that teachers are a key part of

society and provide a very necessary contribution to the healthy intellectual development of todays youth- the

future leaders of our society.

Also, both the BCTF and the BCRTA need to design public ads and publish the every time the media shows the

teacher bashing that is going on across Canada to counteract the "fake news". We need to stand with ACER-

CART and do that demonstrably in every corner of BC and the rest of Canada.

By and large the BCRTA covers most things which are still of interest and within our abilities to get involved in.

Being one month short of 94 has changed many things. Activities in the retirement home takes care of others. A

loving family also fills in big gaps. It's surprising how interesting obits have become.

Keep up the good work.

So many of the Advantage Partner programmes have to be initiated on line. I would prefer to contact/access by

phone or unperson using my membership card and ID.

(JoAnn's note; provides care to parents)

As a recently rehired member and long time political advocate of BCT at the local and provincial level I

appreciate the professionalism of the BCRTA. I enjoy the social contacts and also how we are still involved as

advocates. I would like to see how we can be more involved in supporting teachers and other members in union

movements. Thanks for the opportunity to voice my opinions.

Your publication is more attractive and engaging than it was a few years ago. Also, I'm of awn age that I

appreciate as print version. If the only option was on line, I wouldn't enjoy or bother reading much of it. I also

appreciate the ethical, strong professional foundation that you present as our face to the broader community.

(Additional notes typed in by JoAnn:

re BCRTA advocacy Questions: "I know that you submit proposals, lobby for continued support or changes, but

I have no idea about the effectiveness of such efforts. However, I'm grateful my association does this work."

Re "savings": "More than $500 in extended travel insurance alone"

Re "behaviours" : "because of your advocacy I got a pneumococcal shot. It wouldn't have occurred to me to do

so. Thank you"

Appreciate "Questions for Candidates" booklet before elections -- EXCELLENT!

Quality of PostScript

Advocacy for seniors for teachers and students, for social justice here and elsewhere.

Appreciate those who'd volunteer to serve on the Executive and those who work with the other group with

similar interests in BC and across Canada, Thank you.

Am grateful for our local group who organize special events for us - keeping us having fun, meeting new

retirees, honouring life members, keeping us informed etc, etc.

(JoAnn notes: says he/she does not receive Connections but does use the website)

I enjoy much of the magazine , our local luncheons and think this survey was a very good idea.

"The recent ad for a long-stay in Portugal peaked (sic) my interest. Do you ever have longer iterating trips in

Having taught in Alberta (1955 -1965) 1965 we lost our home and all our belongings. (3 children, Mom and Dad)

moved to Valemount, BC. Here I taught 1965 -2005, 40 years with a special learning needs certificate for

teaching 15 years. A meeting in the year 1970 with Doug Smart from the BCTF brought the great news that

teachers from the provinces could receive credit for pension deductions that were added to their retirement

funds in BC. Hurrah! Through the years of teaching I always attended BCTF's meetings whenever possible. I

was always proud of the School District and what they accomplished with a limited budget in hard times. In

Valemount in 1980 yo 2016, I worked with the Yellowhead Book Team -- writers of the Yellowhead Pass and Its

People and builders of then local Museum. Thank you. XXXXXXXXXXXX

(JoAnn's note: the Respondent cites health and distance problems that prevent attending branch functions and

volunteering.)

Although I am not actively involved I do appreciate the magazine and newsletters. I like to be kept up to date

and aware of any concerns I should know about.

Get increase in pensions. Like CPP for all

I really appreciate all the work that is done on my behalf.

I very much appreciate BCRTA practical info re our pensions, insurance, and saving money. I appreciate getting

PS yet unfortunately the paper is printed on is too plastic to be recycled here from wha the depot workers have

told me. can we somehow publish using thinner paper?

Helped organize local branch then moved away. Now get better deal on travel insurance from BCAA. Hardly

ever visit the website.

Publish Pat Brady jokes. Keep up the good work.

(JoAnn notes: This person claims that she/he does not receive Connections yet provides an email address.)

The BCRTA keeps me in touch with public education and i find the PS very interesting and informative and often

send in the completed puzzles. I am long retired as I am 98 years old.

It keeps professionals together after retirement. Helps look and direct after those in an aging world who may

need help.

Impressed with testimonies of active seniors who experience activities out-of-the-ordinary which encourages

me to travel. Age 74 and 35 year retiree.

I essentially like the BCRTA; I'm a member by choice.

I enjoy the multitude of articles in PostScript and read most of them with interest and anticipation. this month

in particular the breadth of topics was particularly good.

My concern always is that the BCRTA remain a "non-partisan" organization. My concern with my local -- and--

one of the reasons I have lost some of my interest in the local and rarely attend meetings is because it has

moved too close to one particular political party..

Im retired and well educated; I don't need nor do I appreciate constant indoctrination. But I enjoy my friends of

all political stripes.

The presdient of our Parksville Qualicum RTA regularly keeps us up-to-date monthly re. BCRTA news; I so

appreciate that support greatly. to all RTA associations do that. Keep up the good work!

I am starting to read the PS more and more. I would like to see articles about volunteering for local not-for-

profit and more about climate change and other environmental issues and what I/we can do to help.

keep up the good works in all aspects. At 91, I cannot participate actively. It's enough for me to care for my

home. When I retired, I ran errands and accompanied relatives and friends to appointments etc. I was also

very active in my church. Thank you for remembering me at Christmas time. PS: I do enjoy reading the

More lobbying of government on pensioners needs and more realistic calculation of cost of living increase

keep up good work for retirees!

I didn't check classifieds in #7 but we are now signed up for the Cuba trip trough Square 1 travel in Courntay.

My husband refuses to go to the USA while that horrid man is in the White House. we have visited the

maritimes in 2016 and will visit Ontario this Fall. My husband really appreciated the Obituaries page so he

remembers his colleagues.

We have a great pension. Research shows defined benefit plans save governments/taxpayers money. I do

about 350 tax returns a yr and know how much money is spent on seniors with inadequate or no pensions. A

Canada-wide plan with fees like our TPP should be available to everyone. The banks make more on RRSPs than

contributors do. One pays RRSP fees even if they lose money. Disallow employers controlling their employees

pension plan or deferring contributions. Pensions are deferred wages including "employers' contributions".

I would prefer to remain connected by phone and mail. Goint to exclusive use of computer s is disenfranchising

always appreciated the magazine.

The BCRTA has demonstrated high ideals and sound integrity in its support of teachers, culture, and education.

Thank you to the dedicated staff members for their capacity for hard work on our behalf. Their outstanding

characteristics have shape the BCRTA

Try to increase our pensions

I am fortunate to belong to an active engaging local retired teacher assoc and have been on the executive for

the past 4 years

I would like to see a better plan than Green Shield. They do everything they can not to pay. Also, I require a lot

of meds and am worried about the lifetime limit.

I was a local union leader and teacher advocate while I was teaching. I'm impressed that so many of the

provincial colleagues I knew at that time are now sharing their skills and commitment to teaching wit BCRTA.

You are an awesome team!

A membership fee for couples at a reduced rate from 2 singles.

Thank you for the opportunity to add a comment. As an evaluation specialist, I know how difficult it can be to

design a survey at is both comprehensive and exhaustive in order to obtain quality data. Quite a few of the

items on this survey fell short of this goal in terms of forcing respondents to select an option that did not actally

match an opinion or experience or skip the question. I encourage you to reach out for professional help in

future survey design projects.

Really enjoy PostScript. Love the travel opportunities

The one time I attended an AGM (in Richmond) the election rules were not followed, resulting in a souther B.C.

group managing to completely shut out all northern representation. There were also rude public comments

about the North. This was 2014, or 15 (I[m not sure of year). Southern BC needs to respect and include the

North. When that happens, I will be more interested in becoming involved again with BCRTA

You keep us well-informed on things important to retired teachers

(JoAnn's note: provides an email address but claims she does not get Connections)

I read it cover to cover, it's great.

I'm very upset with the move to Green Shield from Blue Cross. G.S. may charge a bit less, but the only they

seem to spend money on is TV advertising & drugs from Big Pharma. They were happy to pay for a selection of

opioids when I had a little foot surgery, but refused to pay for a rub for my arthritic knee because it had to be

mixed by a local pharmacy.

Encouraging retirees to teach/tutor: within Canada and Internationally

I enjoy the travel tips and experiences, the letter and puzzles. I appreciate the obituaries as a tribute to those

who served as educators in our province.

BCRTA does an excellent job. If I need help I get it quickly with a phone call or answer by phone. Although I am

84 years old I can still enjoy travel! Travel is good for everyone if it is appropriate.

I would like to see more retired teachers join the BCRTA. I know one who figures "it costs too much" and I can't

believe it. We all (retired teachers) are so fortunate to have your advocacy and affiliation with other Canadian

RTA's to protect our best interests. I enjoy each month's articles and photography, etc. It is such an

informative magazine! Thank you.

Extended Health Lifetime maximum needs to be increased.

Great Publication!

I am well satisfied with what you are providing. Keep it up, please.

I wish motr retired teachers joined the BCRTA. They need to understand the value of the Association.

Keep up the good work. The variety of articles always provides a good read.

What is the Advantage Partnership?

Travel for single people

I have had numerous and on-going problems with Greenshields. Has there been some action in returning to the

earlier provider, Blue Cross?

This would make an interesting article in your next issue.

Keeps us informed about other retirees and activities.

Provides info on useful topics - taxes, investment, travel.

Enjoy stories/articles about early teaching experiences, travel experiences, family experiences

Thank you for all the work that you do!

Just joined. Ask me in a year and I would be able to have thoughts to share.

Postscript should have the right to edit travel writeups. They tend to ramble; or maybe provide a template so

informative facts are included.

More information about what other branches are doing and if members from other branches can be included.

There seems to be no easy way to interconnect.

Interactions with others is very positive. Offering free membership to first year members, keep it up always.

More Endless Savings and More opportunities in the Northern part of province

I love getting the hard copy. I like the tax tips and health advocacy

Great work on advocacy for pensions, education. Fine montly luncheons. Great Rambler walking group.

I really need to become more involved with my local branch.

I spent a year on Council- Councilman of our muncipality

The BCRTA keeps me linked to the Public Education issues.

I'd like you to keep checking with me. I'm generally pleased with your efforts on my (our) behalf. I think it's

easy to feel entitled. We (our gen) need to seriously consider our moral and civic re-directions in the face of

vast upheavals our grandchildren will have to deal with to preserve Gaia. We need to sacrifice and lead this

world in that direction.

I retired from Fort Nelson District in 1987 - 32 years ago, having taught in BC public schools since 1945. I read

the magazine from cover to cover. Since 2010 (my 85th year), you have not deducted subscription fees. Thank

you! Does that make me an emerita (I do know my Latin!). I enjoy 3 full pensions with COLA clauses. How

many of us are there?

Activities provides opportunities to meet and greet former colleagues.

BCRTA shows me that life doesn't stop with retirement and gives example of how various persons still make a

difference.

JoAnn's note: (this person does not read Connections and does not visit the website.)

BCRTA is doing a fine job, but I'd like to see even more advocacy for family doctors in BC.

I would like BCRTA to be more involved in Early Childhood Initiatives and assisting needy teens (14-17) to attend

theme session in Ottawa through Encounter Canada.

Love the PostScript!

#27 Siblings . I am pretty pleased with the BCRTA (provincial body). I would like my local RTA at their luncheons

to provide important information on pensions, financial planning, life style etc rather than non-information

topic or activities. I don't go to the luncheons aa they are quite boring.

You are doing a great job! Thanks for always looking into whatever our branch asks of you and for

acknowledging any ideas you see us using. that you think would be of benefit to other branches.

(JoAnn's note: This person looks after a grandchild and a parent!)

I think the BCRTA has found a balance between critical living issues for its members and what might be

considered matters of interest, eg travel, reading etc. G. L. Jackson

An Article in each issue giving suggestions for websites or podcasts that the editors (or others) can can vouch

for their relevance to BCRTA members.

1. thanks for printing my article on Albania and seeing me 3 copies.

2. I enjoy the beautiful and varied photos in your magazine.

3. I appreciate the listing of the dares to receive my pension.

4. the obituaries are of interest to me.

Although I am a member, there is no local branch here in Gold Trail (SD#74). I am interested in being more

politically involved. I do not know if any member can attend BCRTA meetings or selected delegates only. I no

longer possess a teaching certificate and don't now if this disqualifies me.

I like the obits. Miss president's message. too much advertising. Not enough member-initiated stuff. Member

columnists would free & of more interest. The BCRTA is not very much of my life any more. I have grown away

from it. BCRTA doesn't seem to care about public education any more. Sad!

I think you are doing a fine job

Articles on exercise -- about people doing athletic activities (running, biking, etc,)

No complaints as I am at the stage in life where I look to the bright spots.

After 56 years of marriage my wife died in Oct - some sharing of vies of widows/widowers would be helpful and

interesting. ie does one cope. Not meds just standard stuff.
