Committees for skills training and character building
- Make AcadComm more visible and helpful. I suggest a regular release of infographics
about topics helpful for dormers in cooperation with the Office of the VP for Comm.
AcadComm should also provide a sort of electronic treasure chest of reviewers, books
softcopies (legal ones), research materials, and so on in the network for dormers’reference. It would also be much better if the book lending is made earlier. I also plan
to conduct and promote a book donation drive every end of the semester to expand the
repertoire of books available for lending.
- Promote volunteerism for readers for the Dorm Ministry Committee. If given the
chance, I will push for a more diverse acceptance and support of religion through
collaborating with Christian churches outside the school and making ARSA their bridge
to Christian dormers.
- Post health related infographics (healthy food tipcs in the dorm, exercise tips, etc.)
every now and then by SPFW in coordination with AcadComm. For ARSAns to keep
healthy and have fun at the same time, my plan is to have sports and fitness days.
Some ARSAns already do this now and what I aim to do is to formalize this so as to
encourage more ARSAns to join, to provide a range of activities, and to perhaps even
Excellence - The success of ARSA is very much dependent on its dorm council (Central Board,
Hall Board, Council of Committees), this talented group of people being the ones who will lead their
fellow ARSAns. If you give me this opportunity, I will ensure that there will be excellence in the
dorm council. I wish to help nurture the leader inside those who have stepped up to be dorm
council members so as to improve the internal processes and, in turn, cultivate a more inclusive,
more structured, and less stressful dorm community and relations. What I aim to do is to bring outand improve these skills, to help them integrate themselves with those they will be serving not as
superiors but as leaders, as well as to familiarize these leaders with the technical aspects of project
management and event planning which is the usual task of the dorm council members through
trainings and workshops. I plan to tap speakers and distinguished leaders from inside and outside
the dorm community to have more effective trainings and a different perspective.
Community-building – ARSA must work on being strong from within then work towards reaching
out to the broader community. I believe this can most effectively be done by the ff:
Bring back the level UBEs (Ultimate Bonding Experience) even in simple ways
Promote team-building for batch outings by coordinating with batch reps especially for
lower batches
Make foster brother/sister system more relevant and organized. If possible, incorporate this
into events other than OrSem to follow-up.
Integration into the school community – have more tie-ups with organizations with the same
core competencies as the goals of our events (refer to holistic formation above for
examples)
Integration into the outside community
- There should me more active communication and immersion into beneficiary
community/institution instead of simply giving proceeds at the end. I noticed that there
is a tendency to have beneficiaries for the main purpose of making people participate in
the project which is certainly not good. (1) Beneficiaries should be identified upon the
start of planning and, if possible, the organizers should look for ways to more creatively
integrate them in to the event. For example, in line with the theme of ARSAfest, thebeneficiary can be indigenous people and so, a way to include them in the event is by
selling their products. (2) After the event with a beneficiary, there should be an
outreach by the core team or the dorm council together with interested ARSAns.
- Christmas Party for target beneficiary – My plan is to collaborate with an orphanage
and have them come to the dorm premises for one day (we will provide the transpo)
where we will prepare a Christmas Party with games, food, sports, and movie-watching
for them. Perhaps there can be a buddy system between a volunteer dormer and a kid.
Knowledge – The office of the VP for Communications is very crucial in keeping the dormers
informed and involved in the various activities of ARSA. Again, if given the chance, I will improve
the following: Establish a more structured Bridges Magazine by using this year as a springboard and
work on its expansion by getting more contributors and exploring topics
Have regular helpful information dissemination through coordinating with the Office of the
VP for Student Services and the Council of Committees (refer to Holistic formation above)
Let me help give ARSA a full CHECK-UP! Challenge UP! Holistic Formation UP! Excellence
UP! Community Building UP! Knowledge UP! With the Doctor, there’s no way but UP!
P.S. No, I do not give actual free medical check-ups but I will give you my time, commitment and
what not free of charge. I cannot guarantee I can heal sicknesses but I assure you I will do my best
to improve ARSA and make it healthier (not that it’s unhealthy). I do not have medical equipmentbut my equipment are skill, knowledge, and experience, which I will also improve together with your
holistic enrichment, and which I will direct towards the betterment of ARSA.
What does ARSA mean to you? What is your vision for the dorm community and what are some
skills and attributes do you possess that will help you in reaching this vision? What will ARSA lose if
you do not achieve this vision?
Non-aircon room for P40,000? ARSA is what made me stay in the dorm despite how
expensive it is. ARSA is what transformed the dorm from a nearby hole to crawl into after school to
a home I happily return to every day. It made me feel comfortable in the middle of the fast-paced
Manila life and competitive Ateneo environment. It made me think the expenses in the dorm are all
worth it. ARSA and the people in it, people I can call my friends, have become important to me.
Instead of saying “I’m going to the dorm”, now, I unconsciously say “I’m going home”.
It is not my intention to boast but I believe saying all this will help you understand my
passion for leadership and dedication to ARSA. It was a different environment but I know the level
of difficulty of leading a community as huge as ARSA. I’ve been a student leader since high schooland I’ve led groups as big as 2000 people. These experiences honed my skills and shaped me into
a better, but certainly not perfect, leader. I am very familiar with project management, trainings,
group and talent management, among others. I have also grown to be versatile so as to be able to
adapt to circumstances and people and to face different responsibilities. It has always been my
passion to lead. It makes me happy to see other people happy because of something I, together
with my companions and partners, worked hard for. Back then, people asked me, it’s such a big
hassle and distraction from your studies, why do you still get into this? I never gave them a definite
answer. Now I ask myself the same question.
I admit I encountered challenges in my past experience in ARSA which really put me down.
These almost made me become inactive and focus on other school organizations. But you know
what. After that phase of back-to-back disappointments, I stopped and listened to my heart (yes, it’s
cheesy but it’s true). I love ARSA. That’s what ARSA ultimately means to me. And I want to be a
Central Board member so I can help make ARSAns happy through the works of the Central Board
and the entire dorm council and through my vision and concrete platform of an ARSA CHECK-UP.
If we are not able to fulfill this vision, then ARSA would lose a great opportunity for
development and maximization of its potential. I do NOT mean that ARSA NEEDS me for growth. I
am not one to say that ARSA needs any person in particular at all. Rather, I believe that if you give
me this chance, I will strive to be an important instrument of ARSA and of you that, together with
my fellow Central Board members and the rest of the Dorm Council, I will lead the dorm to be a
better community that will focus on enrichment of its members and development of its projects.
