Introduction
Providing characteristic and appealing designs for
over thirty years – flat facing bricks from Meldorf.
These flat facing bricks, manufactured from high
quality raw materials, are impressive due to a large
number of outstanding product properties, their
flexible application and decorative possibilities and
a natural, traditional brick appearance. Not only
that, the durability of the raw materials employed is
also an important plus point for many environmen-
tally conscious, responsible building owners.
Hand-crafted quality –
"Made in Germany"
"Handmade" scores every time: Meldorfer® flat fac-
ing bricks have always been manually produced.
Even today, each flat facing is a one-off with living
colours and its own character. Apart from modern
machine technology, the production at Meldorf in
Schleswig-Holstein above all needs the hand-craft-
ing skills of experienced employees. High standards
and manufacturing specifications, together with
stringent production inspection ensures consistently
excellent quality – "Made in Germany".
Versatile in use –
with high potential energy savings
Whether a detached house, residential estate, in-
dustrial building or a heritage structure, Meldorfer®
High quality facade flat facing bricks – versatile, long-lasting, impressive
flat facing bricks are real all-rounders. They always
give a visually sophisticated solution – particularly
with new construction or refurbishment in areas
where the brick look is the traditional standard in
the landscape. Flat facing bricks for the decora-
tion of facades are mainly used in conjunction
with energy-saving thermal insulation composite
systems (refer to pages 4/5). But also in interior
areas Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are an attractive
alternative to wallpapers, plasters or other conven-
tional wall coverings for accented sections, partial
facings and wide-area coverage.
Long-lasting, robust, economical
In external applications facades must satisfy special
demands with regard to longevity and resilience.
Facades are subjected to weather effects, such as
varying temperatures, environmental influences or
mechanical stresses due to passers-by and resi-
dents. Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are convincing
here due to their special durability: the material is
robust, impact-resistant and easy to clean.
Long maintenance intervals reduce the follow-up
costs – an economic advantage which adds up.
Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are also ideal for use
on severely stressed external and internal areas
such as plinths, entrances or corridors.
Meldorfer® flat facing bricksThe genuine Meldorfer® flat facing bricks look like bricks – but are extremely flat with a thickness of only 4 - 6 mm and they
are also very robust. As real lightweights, flat facing bricks are simply adhesively mounted on the existing substrate. They are
perfectly suited for application on thermal insulation composite systems. Individual structures and formats can be produced on
request.

Meldorfer® flat facing bricks | Compendium
Irrespective of the ideas you may have for your new
facade, with the Meldorfer® product range even
the most avant-garde ideas can be reliably imple-
mented. And with energy-saving too, i.e. combined
with an energy and cost-saving thermal insulation
composite system.
Surface variants
Choose your favourites from thirteen colours, two
different formats and various mortar colours. The
broad spectrum of the Meldorfer product range
has many variants on offer in the traditional look.
Furthermore, there is also the possibility of fulfilling
really specific design requirements individually with
a special production run.
But no matter whether it is a standard or a special
colour, the high level Meldorf quality always ensures
a natural appearance with an impressive interplay of
shades. Meldorfers turn an old facade into a most
attractive facade which is visually one of its kind –
either for a new construction, renovation or partial
facing. The fair-faced masonry appearance is per-
fectly complemented tone on tone with Meldorfer
corner facing bricks, which provide the solid brick
character at the corners and edges.
Meldorfer® flat facing bricks and thermal insulation composite systems
Energy-orientated refurbishment
Saving energy is more important now than ever
before. More than 75% of the energy consumed
by a private household is used for heating energy.
So this means: save money, invest in the future
and fulfil the legal requirements of the current
energy-saving directive. With facade insulation and
Meldorfer® flat facings up to 40% of heating costs
can be saved.
The attractive brick look is a real lightweight solu-
tion too. Due to the material composition and
the low thickness, a flat facing only weighs about
5 - 6 kg/m². This means that it can be adhesively
mounted as a final layer directly onto the reinforced
insulation board without any other fasteners. Mel-
dorfer flat facings are a highly attractive alternative
to the conventional ETICS structure of insulating
material and render. In particular, in regions where
brick characterises the landscape, perfectly insu-
lated facades with an authentic fair-faced masonry
appearance are the first choice.

DistinctiveMeldorfer® flat facing bricks lend a personal character to the thermally
insulated private house.
The appealing brick look sustainably characterises the
regional image.
A high in the North with a feel-good guarantee – the recently
built private house in the Schleswig-Holstein village of Kaaks
harmonises perfectly with a landscape which has always been
characterised by the traditional brick look. The friendly, inviting
detached house is well protected by the robustness of the
Meldorfer® flat facing bricks, even during inhospitable weather
conditions. Fitted as a robust final covering on a thermal in-
sulation composite system, the combination of ETICS and flat
facing bricks results in significantly less energy consumption
and lower heating bills. The colour of the Frisian wall of solid
stones is taken up in the individually matched colour of the
masonry – an attractive detail for a traditional, northern group
of buildings with style.

flat facing bricks the ideal final covering for ETICS.
Optimum energy efficiency with attractive visual effect
Commendable in terms of energy consumption and straight-
forward in character – the apartment house in Bad Oldesloe
is in many aspects exemplary. A thermal insulation composite
system sustainably reduces energy consumption and also
ensures significantly less pollutant emissions – a plus both for
the residents and the environment. The facade covered with
Meldorfer® flat facing bricks is impressive due to its traditional
colour design in a red look. White balcony cladding and a top-
most storey also in white provide an effective contrast. Other
accents are set by flat facing bricks in grey, which, as accent
lines, lend relief to the facade while at the same time giving it
structure and order.

Meldorfer® flat facing bricks | Industrial buildings
Brick appearance as a promise of qualityFactory sales of high quality products in the classical factory outlet. Clear
geometrical shapes underline the industrial charm of the former fish hall.
The WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) in the Swabi-
an town of Geislingen an der Steige is a successful symbiosis
of old and new. Amidst brick-built production buildings dating
from the end of the 19th century, the so-called "Fish Hall" with
its striking sawtooth-shaped roof now accommodates the
WMF factory sales.
To reinforce the link between the production facilities and the
factory sales for the facade of the "Fish Hall" the usual plaster
render fi nish was waived in favour of a matching brick appear-
ance using Meldorfer® fl at facing bricks. The classical brick look
is impressive with living colour nuances – and there is an energy
advantage. It was possible to bring the previous, inadequate
insulation of the building to the latest state of the art using a
thermal insulation composite system. The attractive, historical
building structure is optimally protected and with a fl air of its own
invites the many visitors to a special buying spree.

Milieu protectionPerfectly refurbished Hamburg residential architecture of the 1920s (Fritz
Schumacher Building): Meldorfer® flat facing bricks in the traditional red
fair-faced masonry.
The 100-hectare residential area of Dulsberg-Nord in the
Hamburg suburb of Barmbek is a fine example of residen-
tial construction in the social reformation of the 1920s. 549
apartments, about 25,000 m² living area and 26,000 m²
facade area: impressive figures for refurbishment with protec-
tion of the social background – a clear case for Meldorfer® flat
facing bricks. Combined with an efficient thermal insulation
composite system, Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are convinc-
ing, not only through modern energy efficiency and attractive,
decorative masonry, but also through well-developed, techni-
cal solutions for detail such as protruding stretcher courses,
corner bonds or steeply sloping window sills. The retention of
the traditional facade visual effect underlines the constructional
and architectonic quality of the residential complex in the long
term.

Application instructions
Format II: 5 courses incl. joints = 320 mm height Format III: 4 courses incl. joints = 330 mm height
Various colours in the Meldorfer range are combinations
of colours in graded nuances. To achieve an interplay of
colours on the surface the various shades must first be well
mixed. Therefore do not apply layer-by-layer as they lie in
the carton. This method avoids concentrations of individual
shades.
The area on which Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are to be applied is
divided up evenly with continuous height marks (lining out) appro-
priate to the selected format. Existing fixed lines, such as window
or door lintels, should be used as the starting point for this height
division.
Division of area
Application takes place system-related on a cement-free reinforcing layer of Capatect-ZF-Spachtel 699
filler to eliminate the efflorescence also found on conventional fair-faced masonry. If the flat facings are to
be applied to a cement-bound reinforcing layer, it must also be primed first with Putzgrund 610 primer to
eliminate as far as possible the risk of efflorescence.
15
Application instructions
Meldorfer Ansatzmörtel bonding mortar should be thoroughly
stirred in the container. The consistency can be adjusted by add-
ing a slight amount of water.
The Meldorfer® flat facing bricks are applied from the top towards
the bottom, starting with the corner facing bricks. The bonding
mortar is always applied in stripes within the height marks and
combed with the special Meldorfer toothed trowel. The amount
of bonding mortar drawn out should not be more than can be im-
mediately covered with facing bricks.
Flush pointing
Adhesive mounting
The flat facing bricks are pressed well into the bonding mortar with
a pushing movement. No cavities should be created when doing
this. Binders and other cut parts can be produced with the special
Meldorfer angled shears. It has been proven useful if within the
marked strips the upper and lower rows are first applied. The mid-
dle three rows can then be easily positioned by eye.
Alternatively, additional flush pointing with Meldorfer pointing
mortar can be carried out. This ready-to-use material is supplied
in an earth-moist consistency. It should be thoroughly stirred in
the container. The consistency can be adjusted by adding a slight
amount of water.
The pointing mortar is applied in the perpend and bed joints with
the usual working technique using an appropriate pointing trowel
and is then smoothed with slight pressure.
Directly after mounting the facings, the mortar in the joint areas
should be evenly brushed with a 10 mm flat brush and worked
onto the edges of the facing bricks.
After drying briefly, the area should be brushed down to remove
any loose mortar residue. This working technique with slightly
recessed joint pointing gives the area the desired vivid image.
16
Meldorfer flat facing bricks are formed manually and facilitate individual special manufacture with regard to
format, surface structure and choice of colour. The minimum amount (for each colour) for custom produc-
tion runs is 48 m² and 30 m for corner facings. With regard to processing, pricing and application, please

Important, please note:
• The consumption of the three different
sandstone formats depends on the individual
allocation per m².
• The sandstone colours of grey, yellow and red
are supplied in separate packages.
Each package contains three formats.
• To obtain an interesting sandstone visual effect
it is recommended that the three colours are
combined for application.
• The facing bricks can be trimmed to the desired
length, e.g. according to the laying pattern.
Plinth areas, wall buttresses and cross walls can be decorated with Meldorfer sandstone. The three dif-
ferent formats and different colours can be combined as required to produce ashlar masonry true to the
original. The application technique is similar to that for flat facing bricks.
