Meeting Place: Douglas Rd., turn onto LHS of corner with Mt. Macedon Rd.C322 (just past Mt. Macedon Hotel). See the Map attached for the location of parking on nature strip, marked on Map1, CP1. Start time: 9:30 am for the circle and arranging the car shuffle. We will not be able to wait for long walkers as it’s a long day for them. The estimated departure for all after coffee is 3 pm. How to get there: By car from Melb. CBD about 70km (1 hr). Turn off Calder Hwy after Gisborne exits onto C322, passing under highway and through Macedon, going 3km to Mt Macedon village and past hotel. The Long Walk – 18 km. Map 1. This walk offers a big day and medium effort for our long walkers with great rewards of birds, flowers and stunning views. We start as soon as practical from CP2 with 400m rise in 2km up to the War Memorial cross and then continue the MRWT for 8km to the lunch spot at the Sanatorium Lake. Long walkers are likely to meet the medium and short walkers on the track for a break together and again at the lunch spot about 12:30pm. Afterwards there is a 7km walk past Mt Towrong and down the steepish descent to Anzac Rd, then a short distance back to the cars and onto coffee with everyone at the Trading Post at CP3 about 2:30 pm. Long Walkers may walk or be car-ferried about 1km from CP1 to CP2 for the start. The Medium Walk – 8 to 12km. Map 2 Starting at 10 am from the War Memorial car park, marked CP5 , this will be an undulating and easy effort for our medium walkers. After viewing the city from the steps of the cross and southwest from the Major Mitchell Lookout (first seen 185 years ago) we head north along the MRWT to the Westward Lookout. CamelsHumplookout.Thisisanuncovered“mamelon”ofoozinglavathrustupintoaprehistoricseasixmillionyearsagowhentheGrampiansweretheshorelineofatropical“Australian”continent.FromthishighestpeakonMtMacedontherearesuperbviewsofthecountrysurroundingHangingRock,whichisalsooneoftheserarelyseenmamelons.Afterdescendingthis0.5kmclimbwewalkon4kmtothelunchspotforusallatSanatoriumLake,arelicoftheTBconvalescence.TheSanatoriumcarpark,markedCP4,isagoodplacetohavearrangedacar(s)fordriverstogobackafterlunchtocollecttheircars.ShortWalkersmaybeofhelpwiththis.ThosestayingonatSanatoriumLakemayexplorethebirdsandplantlifealongseveralkmofloopsandalongtheaccesstotheZigZagtrack.AlternativelysomeMediumWalkerscancontinueona4kmloopbackalongBarringoRdfromZigZagRdtoreturntotheCamelsHumpcarparkforcollection.Pleasenotetheroadsandintersectionstobefollowedonthemap.Allcarswillreturntoacoffeestopforallofusat2:30pmatMt.MacedonTradingPost.

Shortwalkershaveaself-guidedadventuredaytovisitmanyinterestingplaces,walksometrailsandmeetupwiththemediumandlongwalkersforlunchat12:30to1:30pm.TheshortwalkerswillbetakinginallthehighlightsofMtMacedonwithoutdoingthemiles.Startingat10amwiththeMediumwalkersattheWarMemorialcarpark,markedCP5,theshortwalkerswillbeabletoexploretheCross,MajorMitchellLookout,WesternLookoutandTopofRangetearooms.Othersightsnearbyaretheplanecrashlocationofthe“Kurana”andthe8mhighSurveyCairnfromwhichallofVictoriawassurveyed,keepinginmindthatthegoldrushstrippedMtMacedonofalltrees.In1939theAshWednesdayfiresagainrazedallthetreesandfracturedtheMemorialCross.ShortwalkscanbetakenfromtheCrosstoCameronPicnicGroundcarparkandtoencircletheCamelsHumpfromtheadjacentcarpark.The0.5kmspiralascentofCamelshumpisawellmadepathbutitisrathersteepandisequallychallengingonthewaydown.The1kmwalkintotheSanatoriumLake(pond)fromthecarpark,markedCP4,isapleasantdownwardgradeandtheleft-handpaththatleadsoffaroundthepondisaprettywalk.Wewillallgatheronthetablesbythelakeat12:30pmforlunch.Afterlunch,about1:30pm,theShortWalkerscarsmighthelpferrytheMediumwalkerdriversbacktotheircars.By2:30pmwewillallmeetforcoffeeandtalesofadventureattheMtMacedonTradingPost,markedCP3.
