2017 season Melbourne Chamber Orchestra
32
Melbourne Chamber Orchestra is the heart of chamber music in
Australia’s chamber music capital. With passion and commitment,
the stars of Melbourne’s chamber music scene come together,
creating an orchestra that uniquely expresses the extraordinary
energy of fine music-making in our city today.
An MCO performance moves and inspires audiences with its artistic
skill, finesse and vitality. The musicians conjure both the intimacy and
detail of a chamber ensemble and the grandeur and spectacle of the
orchestra, performing with a oneness of spirit and meticulous craft.
Our Artistic Director, William Hennessy, and guest directors curate
performances that enchant the ears, touch the heart and engage the
mind. Performing music from the 12th century to tomorrow, every
MCO performance invites you to come on an enticing and joyous
journey of musical discovery.
MCO’s season performances can be enjoyed in its two seasons
at the Melbourne Recital Centre and the Deakin Edge, Federation
Square. Outside Melbourne, the orchestra is one of Australia’s
leading tourers of fine music, presenting concerts and education
programs in every corner of Victoria.

Crafting each year’s season is an exercise
in wonder at the opportunities for rich
and varied listening—the pleasure of
encountering old musical friends once
more and the delight of discovery. For
me, some of the new in 2017 will be
music which is 800 years old (music
by Léonin and Pérotin) and some which
is hot off the press (Skipworth and
Weiland). I’m also relishing Wilhelm
Friedemann Bach’s astonishing
F major Symphony and CPE Bach’s
stormy E minor Sinfonia for the first time.
I have long held the view that my
enthusiasm to remain on the planet and
my appetite for unfamiliar fine music are
closely related. Why, even the mighty
Second Piano Quartet of Brahms has
only been a close friend of mine for a
couple of years and I can’t for the life of
me understand how Arensky’s masterful
Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky has
eluded me until now.
In 2017 there will even be those who
are listening to Tchaikovsky’s glistening
Rococo Variations for the first time,
whilst I predict that for most, it will be
the first hearing of another of my lifetime
loves, the magical ballet music from
Mozart’s opera Idomeneo.
We warmly welcome you to this
diverse musical season. I am personally
particularly pleased about the
opportunity of sharing with you some
of my more recent musical discoveries
alongside music that has affirmed my
vocation since I was a young man.

Gilt-edged, electrifying beauty; opulence, pomp, exuberance and glamour.
Welcome to the sparkling pleasure domes of the Rococo.
The early Classical period was a golden age of arts patronage,
as nobles and merchants across Europe outdid each other with
fabulous private commissions in every artform. In the ornate halls
of the Esterházys, Frederick the Great and the Duke of Bavaria, the
symphonies, operas and concerti of Mozart, Haydn and CPE Bach
were first brought to life.
Described by Gramophone as “A superbly stylish, raptly intuitive
performer,” Li-Wei Qin is a globe-trotting cello virtuoso, in demand
worldwide as a concerto and recital artist. He joins MCO to serve us
a double treat, with CPE Bach’s scintillating A-major concerto
and one of the great tours de force of the cello repertoire,
the Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky.

From an unrivalled musical pedigree and education, JS Bach’s sons
blazed a revolutionary path. With Telemann and others, they were the
avant-garde forging a new style. Combining awe-inspiring virtuosity,
deep feeling, and brilliant colours, this is the music that inspired the
Classical era. Rarely heard today, these are some of the most exciting
and inventive compositions for chamber orchestra and we can’t wait
to share them with you.
Christopher Moore is one of Australia’s most recognised
chamber musicians, a viola superstar whose verve and mastery
of the instrument has seen him perform for audiences all over
the world. He performs the great Telemann viola concerto, often
thought to be the first solo concerto for the instrument, and a
meticulous reconstruction of a lost viola concerto from JS Bach’s
own transcriptions.

The night is full of light—the twinkle of a carpet of stars, shards of moonlight piercing the forest canopy, romance kindled by the
embers of a fire—but outshining them all, a song from the heart.
Following on from her acclaimed MCO directing début in 2016 with
The Gypsy Palace, Rebecca Chan returns with a sonorous and lush
nocturnal vision, including Wagner’s passionate Prelude from Tristan und Isolde and Schoenberg’s twilit confession for strings,
Verklärte Nacht.
Tenor Andrew Goodwin’s career has hit the stratosphere, singing
major roles at opera houses across Europe to enormous acclaim. He
sings haunting night-themed lieder reimagined in sumptuous new
string orchestra arrangements, including Schoenberg’s Waldesnacht and Schubert’s Der Erlkönig.

Two ecstatic Classical masterpieces by two of the greatest composers—quite simply a concert to leave you uplifted and elated.
Beethoven burst onto Vienna’s orchestral scene in 1800 with his
resplendent first symphony. Dramatic, witty, majestic, and joyous by
turns, this is Beethoven at his high-energy, optimistic best.
Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 17 is a work of sublime beauty and
incredible pianistic poetry. To perform it, we have the remarkable
Lucinda Collins, admired by MCO’s Artistic Director William
Hennessy as “an ideal in pianism, musical thought, intelligence, and
passionate musical communication.”

LettersTchaikovskyfrom
By turns virtuosic and intimate, passionate and lyrical, Tchaikovsky is
the quintessential Romantic—conjuring powerful emotions with his
heart on his sleeve. This program is a wonderful opportunity to hear
the extraordinary talents of MCO’s string musicians at their best—
with Tchaikovsky’s breathtaking showpiece for string orchestra,
the Serenade for Strings, the charming Album for the Young and
Souvenir d’un lieu cher, imaginative variations by Arensky and witty
dances by Shostakovich.

Death and the Maiden
Perhaps Schubert’s most revered and best-known quartet,
Death and the Maiden was written by the composer during a
period of serious illness that preceded his untimely death at 31.
Dark, passionate and virtuosic, this thrilling quartet demands
enormous musical resources from its musicians.
Melba Quartet is made up of the musicians who worked together
as the Australian String Quartet until 1996, establishing it as an
important national and international ensemble.
