What is Bike Sharing?

• Bike sharing is a growing field of community-based sustainable transport, where a number of bicycles are made available for shared use amongst individuals who do not own any of the bicycles.

• As of December 2009, there were over 90 programs in approximately 135 cities around the

world an estimated 86,000 bicycles on four continentsanother 45 planned in 22 nations in 2010.

Overview of MBS

• Launched on 31 May 2010

• Department Of Transport initiative – to complement public transport network, working with City of Melbourne

• Melbourne CBD locations

• 600 bikes

• 50 Bike Stations

• Annual subscription $50, monthly and weekly memberships available. A corporate subscription is also available MBS members have unlimited access – max ride 30 mins Fee apply for longer hires – strong pricing disincentive to take bikes

for more than two hours

To date:•We have had 450 members join as annual subscribers•A further 3,500 people have used the system on a casual basis•Just over 10k rides have been taken
