1. Network EvolutionAs every other network, your network is evolving.Either it is in early stages or mature there issomething new in your network. Deployment ofnew features, new layering like micro or pico layers,deployment of Half Rate, AMR, deployment ofGPRS, EGPRS, WCDMA, Dual Carrier, HSPA+, LTEetc.

And each phase of evolution has an impact on theQoS.



2. Network PerformanceAs every other network (even a mature one), yournetwork is expanding with addition of new sites,sectors or carriers. Each and every single element ofexpansion has a contribution to networkperformance and QoS either in positive or negativedirection. But it has an incremental effect on the totalinterference.

Depending on the rate of expansion, it might benecessary to change the Carrier Strategy, LayeringMethods, Load Balancing, Handovers, AdmissionControl, Spectrum usage in that region after everyphase off expansion.



3. Network-wide or Region Specific

In some networks it is a preferred approach to put a

common set of parameter and usage rules to applynetwork wide. In today's complicated networkenvironment with distributed features enabled, site,sector, carrier variety in each region or city, it mightbe a necessity to use a different spectrum and evenparameter set in geographically or demographicallyclassified regions or cities.



4. Multiband MultiCarrier OperationToday most of the networks have operatinglicences in more than one band mostly in the formof WCDMA900/WCDMA2100 combination. Vendorshave different schemas for support of multiband ormulticarrier operation.

For example, use of Dual Band WCDMA asWCDMA900 in Rural Area and WCDMA2100 inUrban and Dense Urban areas might be moreefficient and smarter strategy.



5. Inter RAT Issues

Although Intra RAT Handovers and Neighboring

Relations are stable there is still some room toimprove Inter RAT Handovers and NeighboringRelations in all 2G to 3G, 3G to 2G, 3G to 4G and 4Gto 3G Handovers.

Optimal usage of the signaling resources andimprovements in both QoS and user experienceduring Inter RAT Handovers are still one of thebiggest challenges for the network operator.



6. Algorithms and ThroughputIndependent of the Vendor the basic UMTS WCDMAnetwork needs a variety of algorithms for loadbalancing, admission control, congestion controland interference control which all affects each otherand network performance namely the throughputsand user experience directly or indirectly.

Some radical changes in usage or in parameters ofall involved algorithms for some specific featuresmight have surprisingly positive effects on networkperformance increase.



7. Layering ArchitectureMost of today's UMTS networks have already 2ndCarrier and a kind of layered infrastructure withoverlaying HS and under-laying R99 sites foraccess, which may not be the optimal solution.Although a great importance is given to cellselection/reselection and handover parametersettings, even that may not be the optimal solutionto get the most of it in terms of throughput andservice performance



8. Re-Farming NeedsMost of today's networks now have WCDMANetworks on top of existing 2G Networks and LTEis on the way.

There are some definite advantages of WCDMA900in rural areas and also LTE deployments inGSM/DCS spectrums. In all cases a portion of GSMor DCS spectrums might be needed to reallocatedfor WCDMA900 or LTE in near future.
