What is the IEEE 43-2000? In March 2000, the IEEE-SA Standards Board approved arevision of IEEE Std 43-1974 by the Electric MachineryCommittee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society. Thisrevision is IEEE Std 43-2000, the “IEEE Recommended Practicefor Testing Insulation Resistance of Rotating Machinery.”

Following is a brief summary of the highlights of IEEEStandard 43-2000:

Test voltages up to 10 kV are recommended for windingsrated greater than 12 kV.

Both the insulation resistance and the polarization indextest are recommended.

Test results should be compared to historical values toidentify changes.

In lieu of historical records, minimum acceptable values(based on the type of equipment) for both tests areindicated.

Depending on the machine rating, the readings for one orboth tests should exceed the minimum acceptable values.

If the readings are below the minimum acceptable values, the winding is not recommended for an over-voltage testor for operation.

Megger DET10C and 20C

Measure ground resistance and current flow using clamp-on technology

The Megger models DET10C and 20C are a useful addition to themore traditional methods of earth/ground resistance testing thatmay require disconnection and the use of stakes or ground rods.Simply clamp around the conductor or stake/rod and measure theresistance to ground quickly and accurately.

The DET10C and 20C can be used to measure earth/groundresistance in multiple loop installations without disconnecting theearth or ground, allowing quick and easy testing in total safety.

These clamp-on testers feature improved ground resistance rangesfrom 0.025 mΩ to 1550 mΩ and ground leakage current from 0.2 mA to 35 A.

The units are rugged, compact and have configurable audiblealarms. They feature auto shutdown (which is also configurable),data storage and self calibration on power-up, and are suppliedwith a calibration loop – all contained in a rugged carry case. TheDET20C also comes with a RS232 interface cable and iscompatible with Megger Download Manager Software (included)allowing further analysis and storage of data.

Clamp-ons

Ground testing using the ART method is more convenient and reduces testing time.

The new Model DET3TC employs a special current clamp and built-in microprocessor tomeasure and calculate the ground resistance (strictly in accordance with Fall of Potentialand supported by IEEE Standard 81), without disconnected the utility connection. Anagging problem with traditional ground testing has been the requirement to disconnectthe utility ground.

Using the ART (Attached Rod Technique) method you can reliably measure a groundingelectrode while still connected. This method enables local grounds to be tested withoutlifting the utility connection yet with the ease, reliability and confidence of a separatecommissioning test.

How Does It Work? The ART method solves the problem by utilizing the following technique. A current clamp is connected below the point of separation of the parallel test currents. It then measures only the current flowing through the test ground, not that going backthrough the utility. This current value is then used by the built-in microprocessor in theinstrument to calculate ground resistance, strictly in accordance with Fall of Potential andsupported by IEEE Standard 81.

That’s why using the new ART ground testing method is much more convenient andsignificantly reduces your testing time by as much as 40%!

DIGITAL LOW RESISTANCE OHMMETERS

The Megger range of DLROs has defined the standard for low-resistance measurements for decades. These instruments are used fora multitude of applications that require precise low-resistancemeasurements such as measuring contact resistance of switch andcircuit breakers, battery intercell connectors, rail and pipeline bonds, and aircraft frame bonds.

Megger DLRO-10 and DLRO-10X

Portable, easy to use, improved resolution

The DLRO-10 and DLRO-10X incorporate state-of-the-artmicroprocessor technology and can be used in tight places whichreduces the need for extra long leads and two-person operation.

The DLRO-10 displays the average of measurements achievedusing forward and reverse current, while the DLRO-10X displaysboth individual measurements and the average. For more control over the measurement process, the DLRO-10X uses a menu systemcontrolled by a two-axis paddle to allow the user to manuallyselect the test current. The unit also adds real-time download ofresults and on-board storage for later download to a PC.

Both instruments are built into a strong, lightweight case that isequally at home in the field or in the laboratory. Light enough tobe worn around the neck, they are small enough to be taken intoareas which were previously too small to access. DLRO 10 uses alarge, bright 41⁄2-digit LED display while DLRO 10X has a large, backlit LCD.

Megger DLRO200
