The scientific session commenced on Wednesday, the 7th June 2017 with the Sheldon Friel Lecture given by Hans-Peter Bantleon of Austria on 'Where are we in orthodontics, where are we going? Houston Oral Research Presentations were then given by Roberto Rongo of Italy, Kate Parker of the UK and Niels Ganzer of Sweden on three diverse topics, respectively: 'Evaluation of masticatory muscle activity in patients with unilateral posterior crossbite before and after orthodontic treatment', 'A randomised controlled trial of a patient decision-making aid for orthodontic treatment' and 'A novel method for superimposition and measurements on maxillary digital three-dimensional models – studies on validity and reliability'. The keynote speakers on the topic of 'The alveolar envelope as the limit to orthodontic tooth movement' were Jaap Maltha of the Netherlands, Stavros Kiliaridis, Demetrios Halazonetis and Anton Sculean of Switzerland and Heinz Winsauer of Austria.

The President's reception in the evening was at the historic Montreux market place, which is one of the main symbols of Montreux, situated next to the statue of Freddie Mercury. Its metal structure is reminiscent of the famous Victor Baltard Halles in Paris and came from the same workshop that supplied Gustave Eiffel with the materials for his tower. Music was provided by Romano Ricciardi with the Livejazz Trio and the DJ Richard Dragon. We are grateful for the support of the city of Montreux with this event.

The congress in that year will therefore take place in Greece. Entertainment in the evening comprised a lake cruise and the gala dinner at Chillon Castle, an architectural gem located on the shores of Lake Geneva, at the foot of the Alps. The final event of the meeting was the congress outing and Silver Mill Competition to the historic town of Gruyères. The castle, which dates back to the 13th century, is today a museum depicting 800 years of regional architecture, history and culture. The Silver Mill competition, comprising flag tossing, alpine horn blowing and shooting, took place at Clos aux Cerfs, located next to the Church of Gruyères. Previous experience with the boomerang and didgeridoo was clearly a deciding factor for Australia who won the competition! Those who attended then enjoyed a typical Swiss mill of fondue.
