President’s Message
Dear Guild; WOW! We were fortunate to be able to see Kathy McNeil’s works of art up close and personal at the last
meeting. Did you see the reverse on that Audubon quilt??? Did you find all of the spirits in the forest quilt? I’m very much looking forward to Show & Tell from those who took her Friday and Saturday
classes. This month brings with it Barbara Cline and her geometric beauties!
I received an email from a few members inquiring as to why we do not conduct business or give reports
during the monthly meeting. Since we are a large guild, we have a separate Executive Committee (aka
Board) that meets monthly to transact all of the dull business that goes on behind the scenes. While these meetings are open to members, I don’t recall ever having anyone visit with us. That being
said though, the email inquiry made a good case for at least giving an overview now and then. It is my
goal to include a few notes in this Message each month to hit the highlights of what the Board is
working on.
In October, the Board discussed:
The Heritage Day Quilt Auction netted $5085. The Board authorized a $500 donation (~10%
of proceeds) drawn on those funds be given to the Historic Oak View County Park in gratitude
for their many years of supporting this fundraising effort. The Heritage Day event is on hiatus
for 2017 so that we can focus our guild efforts on the 2018 Quilt Show.
The Fundraising Committee, under the guidance of Chair Ina Stringfellow, is considering
several new ideas. These include publishing a cookbook, and pop-up shops from local quilt shops during the monthly meetings.
The Guild storage unit will be relocated to a property more convenient to the meeting
location. Following efforts to liquidate some physical assets, it will also be downsized by 60% at
a similar cost savings. Move date is tentatively scheduled for the morning of Saturday,
November 12th.
Another email inquired as to how much of what costs the membership fee covers. We’re trying to work
out what kind of graph or chart would work best, so it’ll be next month before we can give you the full
picture. This month, let’s just talk about the Meeting Location.
Available the 3rd Thursday evening of each month
Ample parking
Centrally located
Can seat full membership
Set up/take down/clean up all included in the rental fee
On-site storage of library supplies means no one has to lug crates of books home each
month
$530 rental fee per month (that’s equivalent to the fees for almost 14 regular memberships
per month)
Do you have suggestions for a meeting location that has comparable amenities for a significant
savings? If so, let’s explore!
I cannot stress how important it is to the Board to hear from our members. Your suggestions are al-
ways considered, so please don’t hesitate to email us! [email protected]
Kathy McNeil's lecture and workshops last month were very inspirational. On Friday Kathy shared
many of her tips for landscape quilting and on Saturday we stitched some very cute animals. After
learning her techniques we had a greater appreciation of her applique methods and her amazing quilts.
In November, Barbara Cline will be our speaker. The Friday workshop,
Cactus Star, still has space available and the Saturday class, Star Tricks,
has a short waiting list. Supply lists were emailed earlier this month. As a
reminder, workshop supply lists are also available on the Capital Quilters
Guild website under Events and Activities and then Instructor
Led Workshops.
Our workshops are held at
Highland United Methodist Church from 9 am—3:30 pm.
You may register at the guild
meeting or mail your registration
form to Debby Femia, 4408
Irving Court, Raleigh, NC 27609.
Spring workshops will be posted at the November meeting,
so stop by the workshop table and sign up for a workshop!
