The Basel region: Great attractions on your doorstep.

Page 8: Meet Basel

It's not easy to describe Basel in one word. Terms such as "Switzerland's capital of culture" or "university city" are essentially attempts to squeeze the city's wealth of cultural, history, leisure and pleasure experiences into one concept. Whether a visit to one of the many museums, a dip in the Rhine or an evening at the theatre, find inspiration in the choice of offerings awaiting you in Basel. Have a wonderful time!

Feel the pulse at the heart of Europe.

Fasnachtsbrunnen: The unique fountain designed by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely.

Page 9: Meet Basel

Even the mind needs a rest sometimesDiscovering Basel is a treat for the senses: all the world’s cuisines are represented in the city, from the glittering gourmet restaurant to the takeaway around the corner. The city centre is also a shop-ping paradise and includes the traditional daily market in front of the City Hall. And the colourful, vibrant nightlife has something to offer for everyone.

Welcome to our neighbourhoodLet yourself be seduced away from the daily grind by the culinary pleasures and numerous leisure activities to be found at picturesque locations in the lovely surrounding countryside of Basel. The cantons of Baselland and Solothurn, the Alsace and the Black Forest together form a vast recreation area – you can quickly be in the Roman town of Augusta Raurica, at a feast in France or in one of the famous wine cellars of Baden.

Colmar: Capital of Alsatian wines.

Basel’s restaurants: Variety and top quality.

Even in the future, you can enjoy the pastExperience a journey through history in the Old Town of Basel: as one of the best maintained and most beautiful Old Towns of Europe, it is much more than a pretty backdrop. It is the heart of the city, where history can be sensed all around. Wander between imposing medieval buildings made of red sandstone and past elegant patrician houses from the Baroque period.

Where architecture has found a strongholdDraw inspiration from a unique mix of modern and historical archi-tecture. Many contemporary buildings by world-renowned architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano, Frank O. Gehry, Richard Meier, Burckhardt+Partner and others, prove that the tradition-conscious city also loves the new, and present an interplay between the exciting image of a tolerant international metropolis and the venerable Old Town.

The art of so much artIt is almost unbelievable how much art you can enjoy in Basel. You will come across it while wandering through the city as well as in almost forty museums. All tastes are catered for – from the world-renowned Fondation Beyeler to the Museum Tinguely, the Kunst-museum Basel (Museum of Fine Arts), the Schaulager and the Doll House Museum. The sensational three-section theatre is also known well beyond the city limits.

In a party mood by natureCelebrate festivals with the people of Basel as they happen: join the life-loving residents as they celebrate carnival like nowhere else! It may last for only three days, but the city prepares for it 362 days of the year. Besides this, the keenly loved FC Basel football club or the Swiss Indoors Basel as one of the most important indoor tennis tournaments in the world and many festivals and occasions always give good reason for letting enthusiasm overflow. There is always something going on in Basel!

Basel can look back on over 2,000 years of history. There was a settlement here back in Celtic times – and for good reason. Its geographic location between Vosges, the Black Forest and the Jura Mountains gives our city an exceptional amount of sunshine and one of the warmest climates in Switzerland. As well as encouraging a growing number of people to move to Basel, this is drawing more and more major companies to the city each year.

EconomyIn the Basel region you find a unique concentration of innovative firms, research institutes and universities, a cosmopolitan culture, an international atmosphere and market friendly conditions. The city on the Rhine is regarded as the centre of Swiss life sciences and the chemical-pharmaceutical industry and holds important companies in the logistics, transport and financial industry. In addition, Basel is considered Switzerland’s most important trade fair and congress location.

TransportBasel is conveniently located at the Three Countries’ Corner of Swit-zerland, Germany and France with top-class international transport connections by air, rail and water as well as a comprehensive mo-torway network.

HistoryIn ancient times, Basel was already settled by the Celts. The city’s strategically advantageous location induced the Romans to station military contingents on the Cathedral Hill around 30 B.C. Another de-fining event for the city was the founding of the university in 1460, which attracted many scholars to the city and led to its development as a centre of humanism and printing. The Reformation eventually brought silk-weaving and dyeing to Basel, which developed into today’s pharmaceutical and chemical companies. Furthermore, Basel received the right to hold trade fairs as early as in the 15th century. Today, the formerly fortified city is a centre of culture, trade and finance.
