Most historians believe World War IIbegan when Germany invaded Polandin 1939. The leader of Germany, AdolfHitler, wanted to take over other partsof Europe, too.

Hitler believedthat certain peoplewere not goodenough to live. Forinstance, he thoughtdisabled children andadults, members ofsome races, andpeople who practicedcertain religions should beexterminated, or killed. Jewish peoplewere among those Hitler believed werenot worthy of living.First steps

Hitler began by restricting, orlimiting, what Jews could do. They couldno longer be lawyers or newspapereditors. Jewish people could not ownbusinesses.

All Jews were forced tosew a yellow star ontotheir clothing so theycould be identified.

Families separatedMen and

women usuallylived separatelyin the camps.Children mightbe taken awayfrom their parents. People who were toosick or old to work were killed.

Doctors used the prisoners formedical experiments.

What Was the Holocaust?

Concentration campsLater, Hitler’s government set up

prisons, called concentration camps, where Jews and others were sent.

When they arrived, prisoners had togive up all their possessions. Some hadtheir heads shaved.

While they were there, they had towork hard. Often it was cold, and theyhad only thin clothing. The prisonersgot very little to eat. Many were killed.

Have you ever kept a diary or journal? Some kids like to write in a diary. Theycan write about things that happen tothem during the day, how they feelabout people and events in their lives, and hopes they have for the future.

The Franks, the van Pels family (called vanDaan in the diary) and Fritz Pfeffer (calledAlbert Dussel in the diary) lived in the secretannex for about two years. A swingingbookcase hid the door to their hiding place.

Trying to get alongA few days later, Anne’s family

welcomed the van Pels family into thehiding place. Auguste, Hermann andPeter, who was 16, lived on the top floor.

The Franks and the van Pelseslearned quickly how hard it is to getalong when you’re confined, or lockedup, in close quarters with other people.Anne wrote in her diary aboutarguments between the residents of thesecret annex. She became jealous of hersister, who never seemed to get introuble.

In November, the group grew to eightpeople when an elderly dentist, FritzPfeffer, moved in. Margot moved to acamp bed, and Dr. Pfeffer slept inAnne’s room.

Into HidingLoyal helpers

The Franks, the van Pels family andDr. Pfeffer could not have survived intheir hiding place without helpers. Fouremployees of Otto Frank’s formerbusiness brought the group food andnews of what was happening inAmsterdam and around the world.

Helping the Jews meant taking a bigrisk. If their acts had been discovered, they might have been killed.Discovery

Anne and the other residents of thesecret annex avoided being caught untilAugust 1944. Someone who has neverbeen identified informed the Germanpolice about the secret annex.

The Franks, van Pelses and Dr.Pfeffer were arrested and were sent toAuschwitz, a concentration camp inPoland. Later, Anne, Margot andAuguste van Pels were sent to anothercamp, Bergen-Belsen, in Germany.

Anne’s mother died at Auschwitz.Margot became very sick at Bergen-Belsen and died in March 1945. Annedied a few days later. She was 15 yearsold.

Sometime in April, British troopsliberated the remaining prisoners atBergen-Belsen.A famous diary

When Miep Gies, one of the helpers tothe Frank family, returned to the annexafter their arrest, shefound Anne’s diaryamong her things onthe floor. She kept itand returned it to Otto Frank, who hadsurvived Auschwitz. An edited versionof the diary was published in 1947.

On Anne Frank’s 13th birthday in 1942, shereceived a diary as a gift. Her first entries inthe diary were about her birthday partiesand other gifts.

At first, Anne didn’t think anyonewould care about her diary. She wrote:“(L)ater on neither I nor anyone elsewill be interested in the musings of a13-year-old schoolgirl. Oh well, it doesn’tmatter. I feel like writing, and I have aneven greater need to get all kinds ofthings off my chest.”Planning their escape

Anne’s father, Otto Frank, knewthings would get worse for Jews inAmsterdam. He began to plan for hisfamily to go into hiding on July 16,1942.

But on July 8, Margot Frank receiveda letter from the government. It orderedher to report to a “work camp.” Herfamily knew this meant a concentrationcamp.

The family put on several layers ofclothing. They gave other possessions toloyal friends who had promised to helpthem. Then they walked to Otto Frank’soffice building, where he and others hadprepared a “secret annex” for the family.
