Due to the time of year, the grass (now mud) is continuing to get worse, so please can you refrain from parking on the grass (now mud) wherever possible and when you are driving on the club grounds please observe the 5mph speed limit and allow plenty of time to stop. We are looking at having various age groups take control of the car parking, especially on a Sunday morning. Mainly to direct traffic and advise when the car park is full, so as to make everyones life that little bit easier.
More importantly please don’t park too close to the traffic islands on Priestfields, as this prevents the buses from getting through and please DO NOT park on Lillymonte Drive!

CLUB NEWS Taff Gwilliam
1st XV news. This season’s woes continue. Last week Ross Cooley, Cullen Daly and Billy Sandison all sustained injuries which rule them out for four, three and two weeks respectively. Malcolm Cameron has a date for his surgery and will not return until next season. Lewis Stimpson is doing well after his operation and will be fit in time for pre-season in the summer. Charlie Wardzynski has recovered from his dislocated elbow and hopes to start training very soon. Richard Petch although not needing surgery is unlikely to play again this season. Mo Pangarker drops out of the the squad until April as he abroad for an extended period of time with his family. Better news is that Zach Garratt returns from a long lay off in the Extra 1st XV today. James Dance and Alex O’ Leary return to today’s squad having missed last week.
Great news for the club is that Max Bullock, Zeki Yesmilen, Matthew Beard, Cullen Daly and Zach Garratt have all been selected to represent Kent in the National Under 20 County Championship.
The end of season Vice President’s and Sponsors joint lunch takes place on 28th March. Lunch is followed by the 1st XV taking on Cobham RFC. There is also a VPs lunch on 15th February.
The club dinner takes place in the clubhouse on Thursday 7th May which is a Bank Holiday weekend. The Summer Ball is on Friday 5th June at The Mercure Hotel.
The Annual Golf day is another day for your diaries and takes place at the Cave Golf and Country Club, Canterbury on Friday 31st July.

Medway travelled to Horsham on Saturday without regulars James Dance and Alex O’Leary. Sam Garofalo and Ross Cooley replacing them with Bill Sandison, Christian Hecter and debutant Cullen Daly on the bench.
The weather was bright, sunny and still, perfect conditions for running rugby on Horsham’s new artificial pitch.
Medway started brightly controlling possession and putting multiple phases together. From a lineout on the Horsham 22 Medway were awarded a penalty after the Horsham backs drifted offside, Dan Harvey converted to give Medway a 3 – 0 lead.
Medway were controlling the game at this stage and when Horsham were caught offside again Dan Harvey increased the lead to 6 – 0.
On 15 minutes Medway won another lineout through Max Easton, Dan Huntley broke the Horsham line and passed inside to skipper Tom Beaumont who scored under the posts, Dan Harvey converted and Medway were going well leading 13 – 0.
Medway continued to go through their patterns but were penalised for an offence at the breakdown, Horsham kicked to the corner and won good lineout ball. After multiple drives at the Medway line they scored a well deserved try but the conversion was missed, Medway 13 – Horsham 5.
On 25 minutes Medway lost their hooker Billy Humphrey, he was replaced by Bill Sandison.
Horsham were getting themselves back into the game and after winning a lineout on the Medway 22 they scored another try under the posts when their fly half cut a good line through the Medway defence. Medway 13 – Horsham 12.
After further Medway pressure they were awarded a penalty after Horsham were caught offside on their 22meter line, Harvey slotted the kick. Medway 16 – Horsham 12 was the half time score.
Medway had played well in this half but were guilty of giving away some needless penalties.
Eight minutes into the second half Medway’s Dan Harvey was yellow carded for a high tackle on the 22, Horsham kicked to the corner but excellent defence denied them a scoring opportunity.
Medway worked hard to negate the temporary loss of Harvey and after a number of phases some slick inter passing a subtle pass from Max Bullock put Alfie Orris away for a try in the corner. The conversion was missed, Medway 21 – Horsham 12.
Medway worked hard and didn’t concede any points when down to 14 men, a good effort which the travelling faithful thought would lead to an eventual victory.
However after 20 minutes a deliberate knock on by Medway allowed Horsham to reduce the lead by kicking the resulting penalty, Medway 21 – Horsham 15.
Medway bounced back and after a lineout offence by Horsham had an opportunity to increase their lead but missed penalty.
With the game in the balance the Horsham hooker charged upfield and after some poor tackling was eventually hauled down in the Medway 22. From the resulting scrum Horsham broke the Medway defence to score under the posts, the conversion was successful. Medway 21 – Horsham 22.
Horsham were going well and forced a scrum in the Medway 22 and after phases of attack scored a another try, the conversion was missed. Medway 22 – Horsham 27.
Medway lost full back Rhys Burns and prop Ross Cooley to injury so the scrums became uncontested, they were replaced by Cullen Daly and Christian Hector.
Medway attacked tirelessly during the final minutes but were unable to break the excellent Horsham defence.
The Medway coach Taff Gwilliam said; a disappointing result for Medway but on balance Horsham deserved the win and we offer them our congratulations.

MEDWAY RFC GIRLSSince January 2017 we have been really expanding girls rugby at Medway RFC. Increasing numbers from 15 to 75 over the past 2 1/2 seasons, we are now one of the biggest and most successful girls sections in the South East. We run three age based teams at U13, U15 and U18, all of which are able to field full sized squads, and we are at a position where our U15 and U18 could field two full sized teams.
Our girls section is not about winning, we are an inclusive club where anyone that steps on our pitch is welcome and will be given the same opportunity to grow regardless of ability. This culture has created a fantastic supportive environment where every single one of our players thrive.
Our inclusive and supportive culture works, improving the quality of all players and as a result we have had tremendous success in this current season with all our squads. In particular our U15 squad who have been outstanding this season. They have just won the first ever U15 Kent League, which consists of 8 teams from across Kent. With a game in hand Medway are 9 points clear, playing 6 games, winning 6, 6 try bonus points. Even more impressive are the stats - Points For 254 - Points Against 25. The U15 recently qualified for the Regional Semi-Final for the National Cup, beating Basildon 27-0 in the quarter final.
At a county level we have had many players in the Kent U15 and U18 squads. We are hoping this year will be our most successful yet, we have an astonishing 23 players trialling for Kent - 8 at U18 and 15 at U15. They trial in the coming weeks, and we all wish them the very best of luck.
THE CLUB THROUGH THE DECADES
January 1940 – World War II
January 1950 – In their away game against Ashford, Rochester played really-well for a 28-0 victory over the host team, which was their first home defeat of the season. Jimmy Kingdom with 2, Dave Evans, Dave Pring and Wally Elvy scored the tries. Joe Hilderbrands kicked two conversions, two penalties and, also a wonderful dropped-goal from near the half-way line. This was Rochester’s fourteenth win of the season. The Rochester ‘A’ XV avenged an earlier defeat by Betteshanger when Fred Milton and Alan Kent scored the tries to give Rochester a narrow 6-5 win.
January 1960 – Rochester did well to keep the score to 5-3 in their home match against Guy’s Hospital ‘A’ XV with several players with experience of first-class rugby. Winger Jimmy Cuckhow got the home team’s only score when he found his way over the try-line following a fierce ruck.
January 1970 – Ten years later Rochester met a Guy’s Hospital side tuning up for the forth-coming Hospital Cup and deservedly beat them 8-3. Frank Price, normally a winger, had a great game at fly-half and Goff Quested was equally good on the wing. After an early Guy’s penalty, Rochester pulled three points back when Ken Tanner sent Graham Rowlands in to score by the posts, this after side-stepping the full-back!! After a period of Rochester authority, Mike Collier scored. It was a fine result and a fitting farewell to scrum-half Pete Young who was off to Bahrain. He had given the club excellent service. (Right) - Peter Young, John Morgan and George Brooks, all looking in good shape at the 2018 Past Players Reunion.
January 1980 - Medway Colts XV won away at Cranbrook 12-7 with newcomer Gary Friel coming into the side. Stuart Welby, following up after an Ian Dance kick-ahead, won the race for the touch-down. Ali Pettman, playing well in the centre, added a second try and Graeme Allen kicked two penalties. An interesting finish in the Rolenians XV match
OUR HISTORY Brian WolfeM E D W A Y R U G B Y F O O T B A L L C L U B
against Blackheath, Medway were losing 4-0 but about to take control of the match when the ball burst. There was no replacement so the match was abandoned!!
January 1990 – Medway 5th. XV stretched their unbeaten run to 6 with this 11-6 away win over Gravesend and were in formidable form. Roy Hunt kicked an early penalty before Dave Colgan intercepted on the half-way and raced over under the posts for a converted try. Two penalties brought the opposition back into the game but then Colgan scored his second to put the result beyond reach. Medway Colts XV had a narrow 4-0 win over Old Elthamians. The only score followed a clever chip-ahead by Justin Hollidge resulted in an opposition knock-on. Matt Olsen drove over from the resulting scrum. December 2000 – Medway 2nd XV, under the captaincy of Gary Friel, enjoyed a 14-9 away win over Lordswood. From a scrum close to the home line, veteran campaigner
Graham McManus bravely dived through to score. Steve Winbolt converted. Then, from a loose maul, that experienced back-row player Andy Watts, smuggled the ball free and raced over the try-line. Winbolt again converted. McManus later sustained a calf-injury and, as a result, made him-self available for Christmas shopping!!
(Far Left) Graham McManus completed his pre-match warm-up, while (left) skipper Gary Friel consults his team sheet
January 2010 – Medway were given a very tough test by the much improved Dartfordians at Priestfields before eventually coming out on top by 14 points to 10. Away at Sheppey the following week, Medway faced another tough game. The visitors had most of the early play going into a 13-0 lead thanks to a Simon Green try and with a conversion and two penalties from Michael Scaife. Sheppey replied with two unconverted tries to make the game interesting. The second half was a tight affair and it took a break from Green, who sent Bobby Ellis away for the finishing score. Scaife converted for a 20-points to 10 win, the Robin Everest Trophy and top spot in the league.
